Archer's last 2 starts were good after that article on him. Buxton's had 2 good games since the article calling for him to go on the IL.

    Let's go!!!

This is my favorite article every week. Just because I'm unable to listen to every game. It gives a good  breakdown the past week on whose hot and low and what we should complain about or excited for.

I'm hoping they are out there getting 2nd and even 3rd for 4th opinions on his wrist.  I'm sure we have great doctors - but sometimes just need something looked at by new eyes.  Hopeful he can make a full recovery.

I was at first a little skeptical of this trade,  because I didn't see it coming.  Was just expecting the Padres to be looking for a Kirilloff/Larnach/Kepler/Arraez.  But after thinking it over, I'm more ok with the deal.  Consider, with a 162 game schedule,  we will need approx. 1458 innings to be pitched.  With 5 starters to pitch 150 innings each (and that is a stretch), that leaves 708 innings.  If 8 relievers get 70 innings each, (and that is a stretch) that leaves 148 innnings.  Not accounting for extra innings games, injuries,  and poor performances,  I think we are going to need several innings eaters.  I also feel with the talent of our young guns,  this pen may be mightier than the sword of Rogers.  In any case, it seems that the FO is at least trying to make it a competitive season.  I'm looking forward to the games and hoping Paddack is going prove this to be a great trade for present "and future".
Edit:  Last year we had 35 pitchers pitch 1419.1 innings.  Berrios pitched the most innings with 121.2.  That is  why a complete new rotation seems like a possible good thing.

The Twins wanted to go after a good starting pitcher.  Those don't grow on trees.  Those of use who have scratched our heads over the front office's propensity to prioritize bat-first players with questionable defense, and concluded that maybe they hope to flip them for pitching, continue to scratch our heads.  To land starting pitching in trade, the Twins have now three times (Maeda, Gray and Paddack) had to give up a live arm, not bats - the bats in two of these cases were a throw-in.  So, why trade Rogers?  To get controllable pitching.  Simple as that.  It can't be accomplished otherwise.

I had no issue with the trade.  As pointed out pen pitchers are risky and can fall off quickly, and you can also get big seasons out of no where from many guys.  I personally feel people overvalue "closers".  I will agree, our pen is worse now then it was with Rogers, but I am not ready to say this will cost us any games in the long run.  Rogers was good, but not amazing.  I never felt when he was in there the game was over, like when Nathan was here.
I would also agree that the value brought back is most likely more than what we would have got at a mid-season trade if we are not winning.  To remain competitive, you need to continue to bring in guys with value and team control, and be willing to trade guys away before they walk for nothing.  The Rays do this all the time and do a great job at it.

I'm pretty sure we didn't go from "OMG, need another SP!" to "there is no place for a new SP to pitch on this team" in the last week. No starter is fully stretched out yet; Gray has only faced MLB hitters once (though he did mow them down like grass). Given the 16 slots available, it seems like the Twins could easily structure a rotation with a starter (4 innings or X pitches), and a follow-up "middler" (3 innings or X pitches) much like they'd do in spring training. The actual name 'starter' wouldn't really matter the first couple times through, and by then results could dictate the 'final' starting five. ('Final' of course meaning until injury/bad-pitching brought change. So maybe as soon as a week from now.)

I don't like losing Rogers, but I don't mind this deal. Paddack's peripherals have been quite good and if he's able to get his ERA to more closely align with those peripherals this is a steal for the Twins. This likely puts more pressure on Alcala, Thielbar, and Duran to become big pen arms, but if you can trade a reliever with 1 year of control for a starter with 3 you should probably do that.

Hheimer reacted to bird in Twins Bullpen Boost: Let Jhoan Duran Eat
Let's assume (I know, it's a weak assumption) that they start the year with a rotation of Gray, Bundy, Ryan, Ober, and an acquisition, and that Rogers, Duffy, Alcala, Thielbar, Cotton, and Smith are 6 of perhaps 8 BP guys. On paper, we all know that this group isn't going to inspire a lot of confidence among us rubes.
I think we tend to remember the guys who disappoint (Thorpe, Smeltzer types) and we tend to forget the guys who surprise us (the Duffy, Ober, Rogers, and Ryan types).
I'm not going to guess which prospects will be viewed as better-equipped to build up innings as starters and which prospects might benefit the team and themselves by getting mostly low-leverage experience as #7-8 guys in the pen. The idea of inserting Duran into the mix like Alcala was has appeal. It'll be fun to see what the field people do, given the reality that almost all of the starting prospects are likely to be subjected to innings limits.
What gives me the most hope are the sheer numbers of both injury-replacement starting options and bullpen candidates. I think of Chi Chi, Winder, Balazovic, Duran,Strotman, Sands, and possibly before season end, SWR and Vallimont as possibilities. And if middling prospects like Ober and Ryan are successful, we should have hope that a couple more from this group could come in and have similar immediate success.
The number of BP candidates, guys who are likely ready to roll if they're good enough, is impressive. Moran, Cano, Jax, Thorpe, Dobnak, Henriquez, and even Stashak and Smeltzer. We really only need a couple-three of these guys to step up.
So personally, I'm not in agreement with the argument that we absolutely HAVE to add from the outside to have a very good year, but yes, I see the point that better, proven options is desirable. I'm just not going to panic if it doesn't happen. I believe this FO and its baseball people know what they're doing.

HOLY ****.  For real????  What a great plan, and even if has opt outs to let us see if Lewis or Martin are our future at that position.  This Front Office just earned HUGE credit from me and gained my trust going forward to be able to pull this off.

There are a lot of posters over the last few days who need to be held accountable for their comments on front office/ownership and admit they were wrong. The Twins have not been as 'Twinny' the last 3 or so years. I hope this works out
