I think they did it right after the season in hopes he would pass through.  My understanding is they need to get back down to 40 by the winter meetings and can no longer use the 60 day DL, which they had a lot on it.  They also need to put guys they need to protect from the rule 5 draft as well. As of writing this comment I see 42 on the 40 man with 8 on 60 day DL.  The only player listed from the article as other DFA is Danny Coulombe, the others were DFA already.  Are there others above him that could have been DFA sure, but needing to get below the 40 to have room for others that need to be added for rule 5 draft purpose. I know of at least 4 that need to be added, Lewis, Sands, Widner and Miranda, plus others they may want to add.  So they still need to find 6 more guys to DFA to make room for the 60 day IL guys and the new additions.
That means hard decisions needed to be made, and the recent second surgery for Colina and right after the season reduces the amount of teams that was going to take a shot.  None of the playoff teams were going to put in a claim as they still have playoffs to deal with.  Every team is in a similar situation as the Twins, needing to DFA players for the coming year.  I bet we see Colina on the waiver wire again during the off-season as TX tries to sneak him through much like Twins did.

I wouldn’t sign him to an extension. Pay him next year and move on. They don’t need to pay for the decline.

Yeah, me too.  Buxton could be Willy Mays over the next five years.  I will never get over watching him win the World Series for the Yanks or Dodgers.

A top contender in the 2021 preposterous statement tournament. Not even the most disappointing season this year.

The Nationals lost 97 games in a year they had Max Scherzer, Juan Soto, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Josh Bell on roster. The Cubs lost 91 games with an even more talented lineup on roster during the season.

I don't see much of an issue. As we saw this year, there are always injuries. Depth is good.

Even if everyone is healthy, with no Cruz we can do a lot of mixing and matching. Donaldson/Miranda split 3B, Sano/Kiriloff split 1B, Donaldson/Sano/Arraez split DH, Kiriloff/Arraez/Miranda split LF, and if they trade Kepler then Kiriloff can slide over to RF part time too. But most likely someone will get injured and we will have a good fill-in

i think  there's room to get Miranda reps regardless: Donaldson is going to get some reps at DH, likely miss some time due to injury/rest, and there's going to be reps available in both corner OF spots and at DH as well. Kirilloff is going to likely get a starting spot, but Miranda fits well as a bench bat who can play multiple spots.
but good lord, can we stop putting out any articles on next year's lineup that have Polanco playing extensive time at SS? It is literally never going to happen, absent massive injuries to: a FA signing at SS (almost certain to happen), Royce Lewis, Austin Martin, even Nick Gordon, etc. The Twins want Polanco at 2B. Of course they do: he's an all-star there and it looks like he can stay healthy there too. I swear, any article that has "if the Twins slide Polanco over to SS..." in it is automatically invalid. Please stop. Polanco is a poor defensive SS, the position appears to negatively impact his health, the Twins have repeatedly shown they don't want him playing SS full-time, and he's an elite player at 2B. Trying the slot Polanco in at SS is a strat-o-matic play, not real baseball.

So am I understanding correctly, The Twins should trade a 3B with a 3.2 WAR in in 132 games, and 3.6 in 160 games and eat millions and millions of dollars , for salary relief and hand a spot to rookie 3B?

Colome has to be the unluckiest pitcher on the planet. He always seems to be on the mound when the other team is scoring runs.
