KBJ1 got a reaction from RpR in Are the Twins Right in Trusting Miranda at the Hot Corner?
Miranda at 3rd, hopefully the utility guy we picked up can back up 3rd as well.
If Kiriloff can't go at 1B we need to pick up a veteran 1B, Hosmer available??

KBJ1 got a reaction from JD-TWINS in Jhoan Duran - Starter or Reliever?
This is a conundrum.  The Bullpen has been the Twins biggest problem for years. Duran was never effective as a starter. He throws two very good pitched and an occasional 3rd pitch. Most Ace starters throw 4.
Then again Christian Javier just started &  threw 6 plus innings of the Astros 2nd combined no hitter this year - with 70 fastballs & 27 sliders??
Javier fastball sits at 93, so who knows?
Duran's ability to shut down opponents in high leverage situations is an extremely valuable asset, one the Twins haven't had since Joe Nathan. I'd leave him there.
Alcala hasnt shown that kind of ability and would be a better option to explore as a starter going forward.
A strong Bullpen wins games, a 5 inning starter does not.

KBJ1 got a reaction from weitz41 in What To Do With Gio Urshela?
Gio is a solid and healthy player.
Something that 20 of our 40 man roster can't say.
If only he could back up the SS position, he would be an excellent utility man!
Gordon backs up 2nd and is the 4th OF.
He also has speed, a desperately needed asset.
We need Kiriloff at 1B. If not, maybe the prepaid contract of Hosmer is available??
Yeah Arraez makes contact, but why everyone is so in love with his 315 BA is beyond me. He has no speed, power & is way below average in fielding.
Miranda plays 3B, Lewis if recovered plays SS, and Gio backs them up.
Polanco plays 2B & Gordon backs him up. That leaves 1B & 35M for pitching.
Celestino is 5th OF. So we are stuck with Kepler & Larnarch or we go and get a power hitting OF and trade both Arraez and Kepler.

KBJ1 got a reaction from D.C Twins in Rotten at the Core: 2022 Twins Were Let Down by Their Own Nucleus
I have been hammering on pitching from day one (the lack of it)
Yes the window on the core group has closed. While the bullpen actually looks reasonably competitive at the moment, the only good move the FO made all year was acquiring Fulmer. His slider is truly  unhittable! Sign him please!
Lopez was a Hugh mistake. Gave up way too much for a guy with minimal success until this year. Paddock & Mahle as well.
Lewis was an unexpected surprise and as I have also said, they should have rolled the dice with Lewis & Miranda from the start and spent the 35M on pitching.
Lewis only got hurt playing out of position because they had Correa. If not, he is in the rookie of the year convo and with 35M in pitching we would have been looking at a playoff run until everyone else got hurt and flamed out.
This team needs a top starter & Gray & Ryan and IF Maeda & Mahle can pitch,  great. Then we need a veteran presence.
Hosmer would be a great fit if we can somehow acquire him. The Padres paid his salary and sent along prospects to move him. Yet 276/ 16 hr at the deadline with excellent fielding skills would have been a godsend. We had zero 1B all year and it showed. Obviously can't count on Kiriloff or Sano.
But yes, somebody has to step up and the front office needs to go. Not a Hugh Baldelli fan,but give him a good team like he had in 2019 and he seems to do a good enough job of staying out of their way. I look forward to the end of the shift next year and the over reliance on metrics.

Ah, NO. Its all about the bullpen. These days hardly any starters go more than 5 innings. Especially the Twins.
We have plenty of starters who keep us in the game through 5, thats were the swing & miss flamethrowers that trams like the Yankees, Houston, Dodgers, Padres have come in and win the game.

3 straight strikeouts in the 10th last night epitomizes the lack of small ball tactics.

I've been Sceaming Bullpen for years!
It wasn't good enough when we had Roger's, May, Pressley & Duffy and it couldn't be any worse now.
Magill & Cotton have shown promise, but aren't ready for high leverage yet.
Acala has yet to step up & is coming.
off injury. Duran is the only savior we have right now.
Who are we kidding with guys like Stashak, Columbe, Thorpe etc al?
Should have spent Correa's $35M on 4 or 5 quality bullpen arms and rolled the dice with Mitanda, Lewis & Pallacio or Gordon.
You simply have NO chance without a top 5 bullpen, the end.

KBJ1 got a reaction from Squirrel in The Time Has Come to Place Byron Buxton on the Injured List
Agreed on Buxton. A  month ago he was on fire. At a recent game I attended I watched as his backleg seemed oddly bent in the batters box and he was completely off balance and leaning forward. He hit weak ground balls with an upper body arms only swing. Nothing at all like the guy crushing everything in early May. Put him on the IL, keep Celestino & bring up Kiriloff.
What to do with Arraez? Love him as a hitter, hate him as a zero speed, no power, poor fielder. DH & occasional backup at 2nd.
Means trade Gordon for BP help as he is out of options. Can we trade Sanchez & Urshela for Garver? (I wish).
Garver, Miranda, Lewis & buying a good bullpen for $35M would be far far better than Correa, Sanchez, Urshela and this bullpen. The last 3 are all fine players, but simply not what this team needed.
We suddenly have a logjam at SS and should have rolled the dice with Miranda, Lewis, Pallacio & Gordon and spent $35M on the Bullpen.
That was the obvious route to take from the beginning. But no, Falvey & company had to "make a splash" and sign Correa.
Typical small market stupidity trying  to buy legitimacy at the expense of the teams overall success.

The Bullpen is nothing but horrible and Falvey & company knew this going in.
Then to make matters worse they traded one of their best guys, a Lefty at that, for Injured mediocrity.
Frankly, the front office should be fired for this clown show.

Put Smeltzer & Archer in long relief.
Sign Trevor Rosenthal, trading Roger's was a disaster.
While I'd rather have spent 35M on bullpen arms than Correa, trading him now would be a mistake.
Trade whatever prospects it takes to get a solid closer AND a top lefty setup man.
The window to winning the WS is NOW, not forever 3 yrs down the road!

Never been a fan of Smeltzer, Thorpe, Stashack. Long relievers at best.
Teams are lucky to get 5 inings from any starter these days. The days of Jim Kaat going 12 innings and winning a 1-0 decision over his opponent who also pitched 12 are long gone.
It's all about the Bullpen today!
One can only dream of the bullpen we would have had we kept May, Pressley, Roger's; the three of whom would only cost $22M
Lewis surprised & showed he is ready, Miranda is coming along.
As good as Correa is, that $35M would have paid for the above bullpen AND bought us a top flite closer.
This FO has it backwards as usual.
Without at least one more top reliever, this team will dash all our hopes yet again.

Correa is a fine player and all and SS was a gaping hole last year, but has anyone compared  Eddie Rosario & Carlos Correa career numbers?
    They are virtually Identical.
    Eddie makes $8M
    Correa $35M
Frankly I'd rather Lewis or Miranda at SS,
Garver behind the plate, Eddie in Left and $27M more $$ in the bullpen.
Thus team has ZERO chance of even getting out of LAST place, let alone go to the World Series.

Does anybody see the microcosm of the first week playing out any differently for the rest of the season? 0 for the season Sano aside, no lefty starter, (only 2 one the roster) and no closer. Even if Duran steps up and seizes toe closer job, the rest of the bullpen isnt good enough to hold a lead.
Trade Arraez and others for solid relief pitching and bring up Miranda.
Otherwise this team loses 80 games 9-5.

Tonight's game sums up how this season will play out.  Arraez sucks in the field and we have a "Pickup" pitcher put in a high leverage position in the 8th inning. News flash: Carrera wins MVP while Twins lose 90 games 9-5.

Urshela is obviously a solid fielder and has shown he can hit and hit for power in the past. Should be the utility infielder for 3B &SS.
Miranda should be the everyday 3B. Granted there may be growing pains.
Please give this fascination over a one tool player like Arraiz to some other team for pitching. He has no speed, no power, no arm.

KBJ1 got a reaction from bird in Twins sign Chris Archer, outright Lewis Thorpe
Thorpe should never have been on a major league roster. Archer in lieu of Pineda could be a win. Should have kept Berrios if we wanted to compete. Maybe the guys we got become stars someday, but for now they are just prospects and do nothing to help us win now.
You only get small windows of opportunity to compete for a WS title and this team pissed theirs away with an inferior bullpen in 19 & 20.
Now the pitching is worse than ever.
Carrera could be MVP and it won't matter if we lose 80 games 9-7. A trade for a top quality starter (Oakland please) or a couple of flamethrowers in the pen might give us a chance. As it sits right now, a 500 team.

So we sign Donaldson (when we should have signed an ace pitcher) and now have to trade one of the top Catchers in all of baseball just to unload Donaldson.
Doing the Yankees bidding for them.
At this point swapping Donaldson for Story doesnt really look appealing, based on his dramatically poorer #'s away from Coors Field.
Spend the money on quality bullpen arms (we are.going to need them with that rotation) and bring up Miranda, Lewis & Martin and pray.
Can Sanchez learn to catch and regain his hitting acumen? Another longshot.
There are fewer top defensive and top hitting catchers in baseball than there are top Ace pitchers. There is a reason why 9 out of 10 catchers bat 8th or 9th in every teams lineup. Giving away Garver to free up money would.only be worth it if you sign the next CY Young winner.
Sadly it seems Royce Lewis can't hit, but spending 100M on Story to find out he cant hit either is not worth it.

The opportunity window with this talent, this team has closed. They blew it by NOT signing a closer the last three years.
As far as next year? Forget it. Dobnak, Thorpe & Smeltzer have NO business being on a major league roster. God helpings if they are here.
Offering Buxton less of a contract than Donaldson is an insult. Make it incentive laden due to injury history & buy an insurance policy. Speaking of Donaldson, he is the piece to trade. Simply too expensive. If we had spent $20M a year on the bullpen, we would be in contention.
