Not a move I like.  I do not want anyone over 30 playing from now to the end of the season.  I do not care about looking respectable.  I want to have a future.

I'm not sure if everyone has noticed, but most of some of the affiliates are going with a 6 man starting staff, but when a pitcher is lined up to make a start on a Monday (off day), they just skip them. They do a bullpen or something, but then will jump back into the rotation for their next start. Wichita and Cedar Rapids have done that.

Good to see celestino & rortvedt having success at the plate in AAA. we knew both of them probably weren't ready and only came up because of the plethora of injuries, so it's good to see them playing well at the level they really should have been at most of the year. Hopefully it continues and they can settle in with a good approach at the plate that will be productive in their next stint in MLB. Both have enough defensive upside that they'll be good assets if they can hit even a little,
Miranda's amazing. His breakout might be the best argument for eating some of Josh Donaldson's salary in a deal in the off-season.
Good 2 hit night for Martin, who I like a lot. Looking forward to watching him settle in at AA and get on base basically all day. I suspect they'll do any tinkering with his swing in the off-season (make sure he gets healthy from the hand injury), but I'm not opposed to seeing him control the zone and hit a bajillion singles in his first season in professional baseball at AA. I think rankings that are dropping him fast because they haven't seen power production in half a season of pro baseball are making a mistake and I'm happy to have the Twins reap the benefits.

I could write a long post detailing how I feel about this decision but this gets my point across well enough:

Those two full years only include about 7 baseball months.
And look at that sOPS+ column -- 89/90 isn't great but for middle infielder, it's not bad. If Simmons had an OPS+ like that in 2021, we probably would have gotten a decent prospect for him. Polanco's not great defensively so I'd call it a little below average from him.
So in 7 baseball months, by sOPS+, Polanco was great in 1 month, a little below average in 3, and further below average to bad in the remaining 3. Overall a little below average for that span -- Fangraphs says 88 wRC+, 2.0 WAR over those 7 months, 790 PA:
    https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2021&month=1000&season1=2019&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=13152&startdate=2019-06-01&enddate=2021-04-30
That actually seems somewhat encouraging if that's his selective endpoint / injury hobbled downside. (Bookended by 5 months and counting of outstanding hitting.)

All Polanco does is show up every day and play. Haven't checked but he has been out of few, if any, lineups this year is spite of Baldelli's constant tinkering. Game winning home run last night but has been very steady all year with .271 average and good defense unlike almost entire rest of the roster. Has been injury free for most, if not all, of his career. Just a solid, if not spectacular, MLB player. Given the shaky status of almost every other Twin, his longevity with the team, reliability and overall performance, Polanco is the face of this franchise until someone else actually shows up. Streetclothes Buxton? Sano? Kepler? I don't think so.

Great article! No question in my mind he is the heart and soul of this team, and our best all around player. No one suits up for more games and can be counted on more than Jorge. I love this player!

Gausman was lights most of the year, but his last 3 starts haven't been good, so if he doesn't turn that around I have no interest in signing him, plus his track record doesn't scream can't miss, which means I wouldn't give him more than 2 or 3 year contract even if he does turn it around the rest of the year.
Stroman seems like an expensive down grade from Berrios, I am fine with starting him, but thinking he is an aces is a huge mistake.
I am for signing Thor, maybe the most risk, but also a possible high reward.
I like Ray, Rodriguez might be a guy they sign to a two year contact thinking the Twins minor league pitchers should be as good as him by year 3.
My preference would be to stay away from Gausman and Stroman and try to sign two of the others guys, with Thor being my number 1.

Not going to defend either party here, as there's no way of knowing what really happened, but I think its fair to bring up whether Twins were thin-skinned here in this release.  Many of us have questionned this FO's(and their coaching staff's) ability to find and develop pitching talent.  No doubt, the Shoe was in the twilight of his career, but that doesn't mean we can totally dismiss his comments as "sour grapes".  There are just too many failures on the part of Falvine in identifying real pitching talent, not only in FA but in minor league development, as well.  How many nuggets have they unearthed in their almost 5 years at the helm?  How many prospects who they let go who have flourished elsewhere?
I have always complained about this FO's hubris.  They think they are smarter than old school GM's, not because of their talent evaluation, but because of their mastery of new technology.  How far has that gotten us?  They first selected a pitching coach, Alston, who had no discernible skills when hired.  They quickly jettisoned him for a college whizkid in Wes Johnson who had some initial success but has failed to develop even one prospect.  On the offense side, they seem to have struck pay dirt in James Rowson, but didn't retain him.  This whole Shoemaker episode smacks of small-mindedness(on both sides) and sheds little credit on Twins management..  I can only hope they succeed in turning things around quickly, but have lost  confidence in their abilities.

I’ve been highly critical of this FO pitching development. However the mistake they made with Shoemaker was signing him in the first place. I couldn’t care less about his demotion or release. He’s done and his excuse making only makes it worse.

if you want to legitimately look at FO mistakes start with Luis Gil for Jake Cave.

Shoemaker is now free to sign with any team with the Twins paying his salary.  Hooray?

Rooker looked good last year in a short stint then got hit. Started slow this year but is picking it up. More time is needed to see what he can do, like the rest of this season. I could see an average DH next season with room to grow. Larnach's confidence is probably low right now but he needs to battle through it. I would not send either down under any circumstance except if Larnach needs a confidence boost. I would, however, bring up Miranda for any Donaldson absences.

Cole Sands line is a poor pitcher of the day result.  Nunn looks like he was the pitcher of the day based on your article.  Thanks for the update.
I do agree with the idea of giving Miranda some MLB at bats. Keep the young players moving up and sit the older ones.

    Bizarre first game for Martin.
So what does Miranda have to do to get put on the roster and help the Twins? Or do they just like to see him play in St Paul? Donaldson ain't playing anyway for the last 6 games. We know Rooker can hit...... and strike out like Sano (....and Larnach 48 times in last 105 ABs). But does Rooker really have a future (Did Palka have a future? Does Sano?)
Is there a reason the Prospect Summary isn't being updated with the new players yet?

For the month of July Sano had a wRC+ of 126 and struck out exactly 1/3 of his ABs.  He will be moveable if he repeats or improves upon that performance in August.  However, he is no longer a big problem and he won't be a problem at all if he continues to trend up.  Why not just let him play at this point, especially with Kirilloff out and see what happens.  Maybe he regains some value to trade this off-season.

I don't consider trading Jose Berrios as winning in any way. That said - the stats say we won. I will miss him. I will hope we take a run at him when he hits free agency. Also sad to let Cruz go - but the return was over the top - and we can also sign him if we choose for next year. Smart day yesterday for the FO - and good on them for keeping Big Mike. I expect to see him back next year.

I think we can all agree we'd rather have Berrios on this team forever. That isn't remotely the point, that isn't possible, and Jose wasn't taking us to the World Series this year. Business of baseball is important. You and I don't have to like it. I am sad about losing him, but not taking this deal would have been front office malpractice of the highest order.

That phrase keeps coming up. Who is to say what is "wishful" thinking? In a year or two, recurrence of injuries could mean that keeping Buxton and Donaldson will look wishful in hindsight.
I don't think it's a useful way to characterize differences of opinion.

I wonder about those above who are critical for the Twins talking about trading Buxton.  We don't know the context of how that happened.  As I read it, they received calls inquiring about Buxton.  Well, if someone calls you are gonna take it.  Doesn't mean you ever considered moving him which is what the end result was.
Also agree with the general consensus that I will miss Berrios, a lot.  But after reading a national report that said the Jays got robbed and Nick's piece on Martin, I am excited that the return was big...really big.
As for winning or losing at the deadline, is a win for me...big one.  The two pitchers from Tampa for two months of Cruz is a huge return, much bigger than most expected.  Furthermore, it would not be a surprise if at least one of the two is pitching every fifth day at Target Field next spring.
If the reports I read are true, the Twins won the Berrios trade even though we will miss a special young man.  Who knows, maybe the Twins go out and offer market value a year from this winter and he comes home...although I agree that would be contrary to how they usually do business.
As for the Happ and Robles trade, I am amazed they got anything for that duo.  Yes, they had to eat an unknown part of their contracts for the next two months, but to get any return is flat out robbery...IMO.  And they got an actual major league pitcher as part of the Happ return.  To be honest, I don't understand either of these deals.
So for me its a huge win.  Yes, there were others they didn't move.  But did anyone expect them to be able to move Donaldson and his huge contract?  Was a bit surprised that Pineda wasn't traded.  Left me wondering if they will sign him to a two year extension before the year ends.  But not knowing what, if anything, was offered for Pineda and others makes it hard to say they failed by not trading someone because if the offer wasn't adequate it makes sense to say no.

I don't see it this way. Giving up on 2022 would have looked like selling low on someone. Buxton, Kepler, Donaldson - moving pieces to dump salary - that would have looked like giving up on next year - and trading Cruz doesn't count, you could not plan on him being here next year. We kept everyone who matters to the offense for next year. We seem to signal that Big Mike will come back - we did what had to be done without giving in on next year in any way. Jose Berrios and our FO were looking at 2022 being a one and done. We blasted a grand slam in getting these 2 Top 100 prospects - and the 2 we got back for Cruz, another marvel to me. It is a lost season, but today's deals, and more importantly, todays no deals say we are definitely competing next year. Now sign Buxton - in the next week. That will say for sure.
