Bigfork Twins Guy got a reaction from DocBauer in A Look at Depth: Catchers
The noticeable thing for me is that the Twins have not drafted any of these guys above the 8th round.  That said, I am aware that late rounders can and do make major league rosters, but the odds go down for those chosen later in the draft.
I'd like to see the Twins use a high draft pick on a good catching prospect that can field and hit.  I think they passed on one in the first round last year that went to the Mets, but I had no issues since they got Lee.
At some point you need to use a high pick to get a good prospect.  Maybe this will be the year we see that.

Won't matter.  The Dodgers conspicuously spent minimal dollars this year and they will break out the bank for him next year.

I like the move from a depth perspective, but must admit I am disappointed that we will have to send down somebody like Larnach that I feel needs MLB time to develop.  These things usually have a way of working out so we'll see how that goes.

This list and set of goals are encouraging.  Had this exercise been done two or three years ago it would have been putrid.  I am liking what I see of our pitching staff and expectations.
This blew me away and if you had asked me I would have thought that the Guardians would have a higher ranking than the Twins.

    Interesting idea.
What SHOULD happen is a signing by a team not expected to contend and then use him for a trade to someone needing pen help, IF he's healthy and productive again.
The 40 man is really crowded for the Twins right now. Other than maybe Pagan, I can't think of any obvious drop candidate to take a ML flier on Reyes. I'd much rather sign a more known arm such as Fulmer and offer Reyes a invite on a milb if nobody steps up.
However, I do want to remind that once things get rolling, the Twins have 3 probably 60 day IL candidates. So if a reliever like Reyes was still sitting there late, that changes the entire thought process about taking that flier.

Remember, Santana had much less stress on his arm given that he threw a large percentage of changes ups which made moving to the starting role easier for him than someone like Duran who puts stress on his arm/elbow throwing 100+ MPH pitches.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Leave him in the pen.

I like Rocco personally and like how he interacts with his players and staff.  I do think that he goes 100% analytics and 0% gut feel but I also believe that is the FO's method and he is told not to deviate from it.  So this I do not blame on Rocco.
My ONLY complaint is that he and his staff are NOT teaching fundamentals and obviously not practicing them in ST.  Everybody on this team MUST learn how to bunt, throw to the correct cutoff, and hit behind the runners.  They also need practice in reading whether or not to advance to the next base.
I love the Twins but puke when I watch these mistakes which previous managers (i.e. Kelly and Gardy) always corrected and NEVER tolerated.

Have been a Twins fan for 50 years... we have had our share of good and bad managers. But... After having Kelly and Gardy we know that we were clearly spoiled. There used to be a saying around baseball... The Twins way... meaning playing great fundamental baseball, running the bases well, good suituationaly hitting, Good pitching and quality back end pitching. At this point we are 1 for 5 ... maybe ... giving that the starting pitching is good but not great. I think we have the  back end pitching but Baldelli and the pitching coach completlely mismanged.
I clearly am a bit old school but in looking at the great teams around right now .. other than the talent disparity ... thy all play "old school" fundamental baseball. The game has been aound going on around 150 years... those that think they can outsmart it are actually doing a disservice to the game and the fans. Pretty much why all the rule changes.
The analytics and metrics that everyone seems to be enamored with are numbers... that is it... they are intended to assist a manager in making quality decisions... not "be" the decision as it clearly appears is the case as we watch Baldelli.
I feel bad for Baldelli as it shows a lack of trust from the FO or lack in trusting his own baseball instincts. Whatever the case unless we get back to the traditional "Twins Way" we are in for more of the same... NOT GOOD!!

It is a good idea for baseball fans to watch Francona manage about 100 complete games to get a better idea of the difference a manager can make within a game. Just watch how Francona talks with the players, press, umpires and how he goes about making decisions. 100 games of watching Cleveland under Francona is very instructive.
I don't have any problem with Baldelli specifically. He just lacks the skills of Francona. Not every team can have Francona either but if you watch at least 100 Cleveland games you should be able to understand the differences, and then you will know that Baldelli is not the perfect modern manager.

Nicely framed Hans.  I think you made several good points.  I've been struggling with identifying the "process" and "strategy" that this FO uses.  Each time I think that I have it figured out, they turn around and do something (e.g. Joey G) that blows me away.

So the Twins tried to get David Ortiz to hit to all fields and he excels with the Red Sox hitting for power.  Did the Twins take Larnach who had line-drive potential and try to turn him into a home run hitter?
One would think that the franchise learned its lesson!

Maybe they go the other way and have Jeffers utilize Vasquez's method since he is the better at catching base stealers.

I cannot accept helping the Yankees out of their mistake contracts even if it helps the Twins in the long run. I’d puke each time those batters came to the plate.  I commend you for your outside the box thinking but this is a BIG NO in my opinion.

That'd be a helpful stat.  I also think that looking at the raw numbers in this article does not take into account the number of games played by each SS nor the ground ball rate of each pitcher/team.  A percentage type statistic would seem to be more accurate.

Somehow coming to the conclusion that Baldelli is responsible for Correa playing less than the leaders at his position is mind boggling. Baldelli, huh?
Gleeman came up with a stat (which I just verified on Baseball Reference) that after Carlos returned from his second injury stint he played something like 96 out of 102 games. A 152 game pace. I looked at it another way. He had 2 stints on the IL missing 21 games. In the 141 games where he wasn't injured he played 132. That is also a 152 game pace.
I hope next year there is a least some reduction in people blaming Baldelli for everything they don't like and every outcome that isn't favorable. How about some reasoned discussion instead!
