I'm sure I probably wrote a comment along the lines of "... there is no way I'm giving up Romero AND Gonsalves for JT Realmuto ... "
I'll probably do it again, too. 🙃

Good read. I think the Twins would have to give up more pitching. I also fear the amount of competition for available players won't allow the Twins to make this many acquisitions without a higher level of overpays.

The only reason I get the Tony O is because I love a Cubano. It's a serviceable iteration and doesn't try to get cute. Obviously not as good as Victors 1959 Cafe.

I'm partial to Tony Os cuban myself.  If I have the time, the Red Cow sliders are my go to though.  But they're literally about as far away as you can get from my seats, so they aren't something I'll get during the game unless I'm really craving them.

Max Kepler has really fallen out of favor in the TD community.  I'd think he'd get one more chance for a bounce-back after a sub-par short season and an injury riddled 2021.  He'll be missed when Lumbering Larnach or Rigid Rooker don't get to balls in the gaps and watch limestone caroms bounce for XBHs.
His contract isn't really that bad for a fourth OF, if the Twins get back into contention and he's still OPSing in the low 700s.  I think he's worth more to the Twins than he would be in any sell-low trade scenario.

Good post.  I'd hate to see Polanco go, but this is a good presentation on why it should be considered.  I will say that I don't think Polanco is going to be an option B for teams looking for a shortstop, but the trade scenarios that you highlight are plausible.

I like Big Mike. The Twins seem to like him, and he seems to like it here. I would welcome him back because we need consistency and stability in the rotation. He’ll rarely give you 7-8 strong innings, but he almost always gives you 5-6 good innings each outing. I think you hit the nail on the head with the contract proposal. 2/$22 with incentives based on IP. Sign me up.

The Odo trade needs some context.  As per usual the ever payroll conscious Rays needed to move Odo and his market wasn't good.  I think we all were surprised the Twins were getting two years of Odo for a single player in A ball.  Still Palacios had potential and he is showing now what the Rays thought they were getting.  A player with a good eye at the plate who also is hitting for power that can play short.  It didn't work out for Tampa but it had decent potential IMO.  Tampa achieved what they wanted though which was getting rid of salary so in my mind they weren't really trying to "win" that trade just achieve an objective.  So it depends on how you look at these deals IMO.
Way too early to assess the Cruz trade and again context is needed.  Tampa wasn't worried about winning the Cruz trade long term as they needed a difference maker bat for this postseason and Cruz was the best available that wouldn't hurt them salary wise long term.  Strotman was a player likely not good enough to make their 40 man next year and Ryan looks good but is a one trick pony unless his secondary's improve.  It is quite the haul for half a year of Cruz but again Tampa needed a short term asset to help them in the playoffs and they got the guy they wanted.  If he helps them win the world series then in my mind Tampa wins this trade or you could say both teams won depending on how Ryan and Strotman work out.  If Cruz fails to be the difference maker they paid for then it seems hard to see how they could "win" that trade but sometimes you have to take calculated risks and I think theirs was a good one.

Sorry, but even if Ryan turns out to be at least a serviceable starter (or better) AND if the Rays win the championship, no, the Twins didn't "fleece" the Rays.  Not only is it too early to tell if Ryan will be good, it is also to early to determine if the price TB paid for Cruz was worth it, as they are going for it all this year.   And I ask the same question here that I ask with every trade - why does every trade have to end with a "loser" and a "winner" like the games?  What's wrong if both teams get what they wanted from a trade?

Knowing the kind of free agents that the Twins will actually sign (not pipe dreams), my best guess at the 2022 opening rotation would look something like this:
    Johnny Cueto
    Eduardo Rodriguez
    Jose Quintana
    Bailey Ober
    Randy Dobnak
World Series experience, cherry-picked stat windows and the super-magical abilities of Wes Johnson will be used as selling tools to the fans.
By mid-May comments like "DFA Quintana now!" and "Why is Rodriguez still in the rotation? Call up [insert prospect with hot start]!" will litter TD.  I'll probably be one of the ones making the comments.  Rinse/Repeat.

I'd rather they move hitting prospects first.  Pittsburgh just traded Marte, so they have an opening in the outfield.  A Larnach package for a Musgrove package would be more pallatable to me than moving one of Duran or Balazovic for Gray.

Astudillo has been fun to watch, but I think his opportunities might be numbered. He's a good player to have come up hot out of the shoot when you go 78-84 and only have one other player in the lineup with a .800+ OPS, but talent progression and talent injection to the lineup kind of render his services unnecessary for the most part.  Gonzalez and Adrianza are exponentially better defensive super-subs, so I just don't see the innings or PAs for him.

The thing that’s often glossed over with Astudillo is that his making contract is actually to his detriment. He swings at everything and can put anything in play. When so little of it is quality, and he’s below average everywhere defensively, the utility he brings isn’t all that valuable.

If the Twins are out, I hope he goes to Philly or Cincy.  If he goes to the White Sox, then I'll end up rooting for a quick decline.  I know I'm a horrible person.

Edit:  For me, 5/100 is the absolute ceiling for Wheeler.  If it's more than that, then the Twins should just make a run for Cole or Strasburg.

MMMordabito got a reaction from Kelly Vance in Moving Eddie Rosario, but Where?
Using 2019 playoff performance as a reason to move a player would work for every other hitter on the team not named Polanco, Cruz or Arraez.  Arraez still had a negative WPA and made the WPA for some of his pitchers worse as well.

If Eddie's 923 OPS is an "absolute abomination", then the Twins are pretty much screwed.

It's funny, Ted, how you can point to the small sample sizes of the Twins playoff games to condescend Twins fans who are fed up with playoff futility, but then turn around and twist the timeliness of how a single player's small sample size is organized across that small sample size to deem his production abominable.
