HrbieFan got a reaction from Karbo in What the Hell Are the Twins Doing with Byron Buxton?
Buxton needs to be signed, he is the face of the organization. I respect that the Twins have to protect themselves because of Buxton's injury history, but it sounds like Bux understands that as well. Get creative and if Buxton stays healthy and hits like he did down the stretch, he deserves $30m per year. If he pulls up lame again, cap the damages at $15m.

This Buxton situation has completely stymied the Twins front office apparently.
"I'm having a really hard time connecting the dots here." - This is almost everyone, both Twins fans and those who follow baseball around the country. Something is amiss and it is frustrating to wait for the other shoe to fall.
As to the possibilities .... it seems what numbers were shared/published are likely real or quite close. The other three possibilities seem much more to the heart of the problem in signing Buxton: the Twins don't believe in Byron, he is ready to move, and the Twins do not intend to pay for a Buxton contract.
Whew, this is too much to get our head around. I mean the Twins could put a team on the field that does better than last year's record for $100 million. That team would need to include Buxton, even if the bill for BB was $25 million (a quarter of the payroll). Without Buxton, the Twins need to go into a full rebuild like Baltimore or boost the payroll to $150 million. So many posts and  the article in The Athletic puts a new twist in our expectations/hopes for Twins baseball.
How is it possible that Falvey is still analyzing their own roster and wondering what to do? The quote from The Athletic was somewhat disturbing. “Now, we’re working through understanding all sides of this ultimately. We’ll proceed accordingly. At this stage of the offseason, we’re still just navigating our strategy and planning and trying to understand what’s available to us and what the market looks like on all periods. As is always the case, this isn’t unique to Byron or otherwise, there are people on our team that are interesting to other clubs and we just always need to work through what does that look like, what does our team look like as we navigate it.”
This entire past year has been confusing. My default is to accept what Falvey sees as best for making the Twins competitive, even when I disagree. The unfolding of this drama with Buxton causes me to question. Yah, what the hell is going on?

Here comes a bunch of proposals where we trade several mediocre players or prospects.  Oakland is not going to give any proposal 2 minutes of thought if it does not contain a high ceiling / high FV prospect.

About the Astros missing on Brady Aiken, remember that they used that pick to draft Bregman the next year, then choosing Kyle Tucker with their own pick.  For high draft picks they get Correa, Bregman and Tucker.  We get Buxton and a utility player.  Bigger difference than it may originally seem.

Are there any teams in any years for which you couldn't make this argument? Baseball's draft is subject to much greater uncertainty than most sports because the players are drafted so young. There will always be decisions that appear to be mistakes in retrospect.

The good news on Lewis is that when playing his last baseball he was the best player in the league while playing with the best minor league players in the game.  Do you know if he will be participating in the Twins Instructional Camp this fall?  Assuming they have one?

Interesting facts, Johnny.  MSP is a mid-market, so having the 17th biggest payroll is about where they could be expected to spend.  Now finishing last in what arguably was the worst division in baseball says there were reasons other than payroll for their failure.

Please not Stroman. I'm not sure I can handle several years of TwinsDaily articles arguing whether or not Stroman is an "ace." 😀

Unless they spend $6-8M on someone they like better, Pineda will be back as a veteran #3-4 part of the rotation. He's not special. But when on the mound, he's been good to very good for 3yrs now.
PLEASE find a way to agree on an extension for Buxton. At some point you have to gamble a bit in hope of winning. The kid just dominates and makes a difference in so many ways when he's in the lineup. Again, it's a bit of a gamble. But you just have to find a way to make it work.
    Polanco is a STUD! PERIOD!
Amazing how this team has played .500 ball and beaten or held serve against top teams since trading away our top hitter and pitcher. This confirms what I've felt for some time now.
1] Real money spent on ONE GUY, probably Stoman,  to head your rotation.
2] Trade or splurge on a 1yr deal for a #2, but keep the roster in place.
3] With apologies to our current coaches, but bring in someone who can communicate a different approach other than bombas. Homers are awesome! But we can't just live by ONE big inning. The talent on hand, including a healthy Kirilloff as well as Larnach and Miranda coming up, is fine. And K's are just part of today's game. But there just HAS to be a way to take the talent on hand and provide more efficiency.
4] I have issues with some things Rocco has done. Never more than this season. I think he's still growing in to his position. But PLEASE, give him a bench coach with experience who can get in his ear and advise him on a few things he might not be seeing clearly. I think Shelton did that. I think Bell might have been that guy. And I don't know who THE GUY might be, but Rocco needs a smart,  maybe veteran guy, who he can respect to hold the reigns a bit.

None, if we have the money to bring in a big free agent, I want it to be a pitcher.
That said, to answer this thread, Carlos Correa would look great in a Twins uniform.

Canterino and Duran have elbow stuff... and both are on a throwing program in Ft. Myers. Winder is a shoulder thing, and he's also in Ft. Myers. I doubt any of the three will pitch in a game this year. And yeah, I'm sure they are trying everything to avoid surgery.

Ryan's sample size is simply too small to generate a reliable extrapolation. As an example, back in 2013 Andrew Albers had better results in his first two starts major league starts than Ryan did in his.

According to Cody's article the most the Twins would be on the hook for is 30 mill...IF they pick up his option years.  If they did that you would believe he would be pitching very well at the time.  Good value for that many years of good performance.  If not you cut the cord if things don't work out and you are out 9.25 in guaranteed $$$...they were probably hoping for him to be a 5th starter type.  If you get league average or so performance out of him in that role that is a bargain.
