bean5302 got a reaction from glunn in Taylor Rogers and Twins Avoid Arbitration at $7.3MM
Taylor Rogers and the Twins agreed on a $7.3MM salary to avoid arbitration in Rogers' final year or arbitration eligibility. The great news here is the Twins must expect Rogers has fully recovered from his pulley tendon sheath injury, meaning it's likely Rogers made the right call by not having surgery it seemed like the Twins were pushing. This is a major boon for the Twins' bullpen; let's just hope Rogers' pulley tendon holds together this season and he can officially put the rare issue behind him permanently.

Urshela, guaranteed. I don't think there is any question on this at all. It all depends on the severity of the theoretical injury to Correa. The Twins are not adding Martin to the 40 man for a 10 day IL stint for Correa/Urshela and they're not going to start the clock and burn Lewis' rookie status for 2 months.

    10 day IL
    Urshela
    Lewis
    Gordon
    Beckham
    Robertson

60 day IL out for 60 days
    Urshela
    Palacios
    Beckham
    Robertson
    Gordon
    Lewis

60 day IL out for season
    Urshela
    Palacios
    Martin
    Lewis

Petty would have made the list, though Graterol is no longer a prospect as he lost his rookie status. MLB grades Chase Petty's fastball as a 70. They put his slider at 55 and his changeup at 50 while Baseball America was even more bullish with a 70, 70, 55 ratings on those pitches, respectively.

The MLB world will know far more about him once he starts pitching against professional competition this year.

bean5302 got a reaction from Jerr in Miguel Sano drops 25 pounds
5lbs a month doesn't impress me, but at 247 lbs (if that's the number), it may help his mobility a little. Accelerating mass takes energy and the extra mass in Sano's body definitely slowed his swing and ability to adjust so losing excess baggage may help him a bit at the plate.

Sano's All Star value once laid in his ability to play above average 3B, now potentially relegated to DH because of terrible play at 1B more than his lack of range, I'm not sure where Sano really ranks on the depth chart.

At the very worst, the weight loss is great for his personal health and no matter which way it the baseball spins, that's a good thing.

I don't put a lot of weight in these projections, but they typically are conservative with young guys. Yet, even they demonstrate why signing these low end starters is a weak proposition. Stop spending 10M on a back end vet and 5M on an even more back end vet, spend 15M (or more please) on an actual useful pitcher (math for demonstration purposes only). The young misfits in the system are unlikely to be much of a step back from the bottom tier vets, if a step back at all.

If you're going to project Ryan out, you need to multiply Kopech by 2.5x. He only started 4 games and pitched 69 innings. Not to mention Cease and Kopech both possess ace level talent. Cease may have managed only 2.9 bWAR, but he had 4.4 fWAR. Kopech also put together 1.7 fWAR. Adding the innings for both of them could easily see
    4.0 WAR - Lynn
    4.0 WAR - Giolito
    5.0 WAR - Cease
    4.0 WAR - Kopech
    0.0 WAR - Keutchel
    17.0 WAR

    Tigers
    4.0 WAR - Rodriguez
    2.0 WAR - Mize
    2.0 WAR - Pineda
    0.0 WAR - Skubal

    Twins

    2.5 WAR - Ryan

    2.5 WAR - Quantrill
    1.5 WAR - Plesac
    1.0 WAR - Civale

If there aren't any moves or anything, I think that's fairly reasonable for guesses.

Analytics have made the game far more boring. It turns out, exciting plays are often risky plays, and risky plays don't statistically result in the best outcome according to analytics. Variety and suprise are also entertaining and analytics direct coaches and front offices to carve away the less successful ways of playing and concentrate on more successful methods. This results in a reduction in variety and surprise as a result.
The rule changes put into place are designed to shake up the data and create more variety. Ultimately, a pattern will emerge and will result in analytics choosing a new most successful methodology which will eliminate variety once again. Rule changes may happen again as a result. Or, in the absolute best case, the analytics will reveal balance and multiple ways of doing things, preserving variations and thus surprise, risk and entertainment.
