October 2023 Update (End of Season)
Austin Martin was at risk of fading into prospect irrelevance – a stunning feat for a player who was drafted fifth overall in 2020 and ranked as the top prospect as recently as 2022. His poor performance and constant health struggles pushed him to that point before a resurgent second half of 2023 catapulted him firmly back onto the radar. Martin was in top form down the stretch for the Triple-A Saints, slashing .287/.428/.456 (.884) with a 29-to-29 K/BB ratio and 13 steals in August and September. He looks ready to help the Twins in 2024.
July 2023 Update
What Austin Martin hoped would be a year of redemption has so far been anything but. He suffered an elbow injury in spring training that cost him nearly all of the first half, and has really struggled to hit in the minors since returning. Martin still possesses the talent of a top-five draft pick and no one should count him out at 24, but this is shaping up to be another year of stagnant (at best) development. He needs to find himself at the plate, find a clear identity defensively, and then maybe he can find his way to the majors.
