GAME THREAD: 4/7/21 Minnesota Twins @ Detroit Tigers, 12:10 pm CDT

Welcome to Game 6 of the 2021 season! Just as with my other game, we’re coming off an extra-innings defeat. I’ve heard of being a jinx for a team, but never via a time-reversal. We have two opening-day starters squaring off today, so the batters may not have an easy time of it:

Kenta Maeda, RHP, 0-0, 2.08 ERA, 5 SO
Matthew Boyd, LHP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 SO

Carnac the Magnificent: <holding envelope to forehead> “Today’s lineup”
Ed McMahon: <solemnly> Today’s lineup.
Carnac: One of us is redundant here, and I’m pretty sure it’s not me.
Ed: My apologies, your Magnificence. Tell us the extraordinary import of your divination.
Carnac: The whatinary what of my who?
Ed: <in monotone> What’s in the envelope?
Carnac: May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your athletic supporter.
Ed: My apologies again. What will we find when you open the envelope?
Carnac: Paper.
Ed: Printed with the lineup for the game we are about to witness?
Carnac: Or, ‘witless,’ in your case.
Ed: To your radiating brilliance, oh seer of seers, I would not presume to compare.
Carnac: That would be wise, except that I know you are not.
Ed: In any case, are we about to learn the lineup of baseball players for today?
Carnac: Uncertain. I have given you simply the answer to the question in the jar.
Ed: A hermetically sealed one. Of the mayonnaise variety I might add.
Carnac: On Funk and Wagnalls' porch since noon today.
Ed: As a child of four… can plainly tell. Can you be so kind as to reveal the question?
Carnac: I can. <sits silently>
Ed: Please do so. Again, the answer to which is: “Today’s lineup.”
Carnac: <opens, blows, removes card> “What are Hoda Kotb, Savannah Guthrie, and Al Roker?”
Ed: Hi-yo! Today's lineup, ladies and gentlemen!

Wow, Garlick and Rooker in the lineup the same day. Pretty ugly lineup. Too early to speculate which of those two will go to St. Paul for a "reset" first and whether it will be in April? My moneys on Rooker in St. Paul by April 25 replaced by .... Keon Broxton. They're going to make Kirilloff wait until May 15.

Does Donaldson come back on the 12th? (1+10=11)

What are the odds someone else goes on the IL by then?

40 man being what it is, we likely won't see Keon unless an outfielder goes on the 60 day. Or in the event of trade for non-40 man level prospects. Or we go to St. Paul.

I think Kirilloff will replace Rooker at some point. As for Broxton, I think he's only going to be an option if Buxton is hurt. Plus, they could go Celestino over Broxton since he's already on the 40 man.

Looks like Rooker to the IL with a cervical strain. LHP Waddell called up. No corresponding 40-man move as of yet as Waddell wasn't on the 40 to begin the season.

Seems that Rooker just can't catch a break. I have high hopes for him, but he needs to get healthy and get some work in across the river.

Looks like Colina to the 60-day IL

Do we really need a 9th reliever? I like what I saw from Waddell in ST, but I don't know if we really needed a 3rd lefty. We could use another bench bat with just Garlick, Astudillo, and Jeffers as the backups.

If this cervical strain affecting Rooker's swing, it would explain why he's been struggling at the plate recently, but methinks it's also due to a lack of plate discipline.

Or maybe it has something to do with the belly flop he made on that catch in the outfield?

Probably more to do with the belly flop he did.

His plate appearances fell more like he is trying to do too much. whether he is trying to hard to pull the ball or take it the other way, swinging for the fences, or just over thinking his swing. His problem there is more likely between the ears than anything. Maybe this time off will help him get out of his own head and come back more the hitter he was before he got hurt last year.
