Cheap Roster Answers?

Twins Video

I noticed this this mornings and thought maybe there's a couple of players that may fill a need on the Twins roster. 36/40 man roster filled.

Intriguing free agents after the tender deadline (mlb.com)

Nick Senzel in CF wouldn't be the worst fit. He's also a pretty good bat against lefties.

Juan Yepez as a RH 1B/OF option? This one a question even mentioning. Was pretty good in 2022...Minor league signing?

I would make a serious push to get Woodruff. I would offer a 2 or 3 year deal to begin with. Less this year when he won't do much bet rehab, then big boost after. A deal like they did with Pineda, but with a much higher value. I would also try to re-sign Mahle. Woodruff has been a top tier starter for the last couple years, and Mahle isn't far behind.

Same here. At least one of the two pitchers you mentioned. Payroll should expand once a new TV deal is worked out for the more expensive years of a deal like that.

Sadly, these guys are likely toast. Woodruff has the dreaded shredded shoulder. Mahle can return from TJ but he has suffered from repeated serious troubles with his shoulder. Shoulder injuries turn MLB players into DHs in Men's Leagues ... if they can still swing.

There are several who have come back, some stronger than before.

Thanks again Weitz for your intriguing ideas. I've advocated getting Senzel back during Cave's early sub CF days, I thought a change of scenery might do him some good. He could still very well be a viable cheap option.

I believe that Paparesta could get Turnbull back in shape. & do well w/ the Twins. DET didn't have the dependable INF to go along with Turnbull's fort`e, if the Twins keep Polanco I'd give him a shot. Otherwise, no thank you.

I don't know much about any of the players mentioned, but I think ideas like this will be necessary to consider this off-season. With the current budget restraints, any idea that the Twins are going to compete for the top-flight free agents, or even the second tier, is just wishful thinking if not pure fantasy. It's time for bargain pickups or dumpster diving yet again. Hopefully, we can swing an interesting trade that doesn't ruin our prospect pipeline, but I think we will need to look more along the fringes this time around.

I suggested Senzel as a trade target last spring as he seemed a great fit then.  To me, he replaces Gordon, as the player Gordon was supposed to be except RH.  I thought he was a talented guy that might need a change of scenery.  He also has options so that gives him twice Gordon’s value in this roster. Actually being able to play several defensive positions is nice too.

Most of these non-tendered players were not scheduled for big arbitration awards. If the Twins were interested they could have paid cash to obtain them before the deadline and it would only cost a roster spot to keep them.

Dakota Hudson is another name to add to the list of pitchers I'd try to convert to a reliever in AAA.

Normally I don't get too high on a part-time player but knowing that we are stuck with Rocco managing this team for the forseeable future and his penchant for analytics to the tune of platooning his players on a daily basis, Senzel would be a terrific RH bat upgrade over rostering players like Garlick or Luplow. Not sure what it would take to get him. I see he made just under $2M last year. He could be platooned with Wallner in LF and more insurance for CF.

The 2025 budget says this is a bad idea.

I see Andrew Knizner was non tendered by St Louis and he seems like a solid backup catcher.  He is almost 29 but has big league experience and hit 10 homers last year in 250 abs.

Senzel would be very interesting with his versatility (OF/3B/2B) speed, and RH bat.  They should give him a call.  Even though Castro is a SH, a guy like Senzel could make Gordon or Farmer, even Polanco expendable.  He's a good fit.

Woodruff is a very interesting opportunity.  If his shoulder is as bad as tony&rodney said, then that dream goes in the trash bin.  However, for ME, if I'm blissfully ignorant, the idea of signing him to a three year deal with one to rehab and two to pitch is intriguing to say the least.  It could either be the greatest move the Twins have ever made, or the all time worst.  I guess you just have to have your medical people pour over his reports and advise you as best they could.

There will be a TON of teams not just looking for a pitcher, but looking for MULTIPLE pitchers this off season.  There will be some interesting opportunities and some very good and very bad decisions made.  I hope our FO makes the right ones !!

I was pounding the table to take a shot at Senzel at the deadline given the versatility you mentioned as well as the fact that he had an OPS over a thousand against lefties in 2023.

The Twins do not need cheap

They may not "need" cheap, but with the TV revenue uncertainty, it's what they may be stuck with.

But how much?  No one knows because the books are kept secret.  And they may "have" it, but they have announced that the budget will be lower.  So they don't "have" it to spend.
