Troy's Twins Thoughts

Twins Video

Hey everyone,

I'm back with my thoughts again. I am a Twins fan, but just a very frustrated one. So here we go

- I love the trade deadline moves. A lot of people think the Twins gave up too many prospects in the deals, I think they got Mahle, Lopez, and Fulmer for the right price. They didn't give up any top 5 players in the system and 1 borderline top 100 player in Spencer Steer. They have control of Mahle and Lopez next year also. I like getting proven players that are young and under team control for prospects.

- If any of you follow me on twitter ( @troykell2 ), you may have seen my displeasure for the way Rocco has handled the pitching staff. How Rocco pulls Bundy with a 2 hit shutout going after 65 pitches is beyond me. The bullpen cannot pitch everyday and be expected to be effective.

-Emilio Pagan is still on this team and put into high leverage situations. Nobody knows why. He has been literally the worst relief pitcher in baseball for the last 3 years. Aaron Gleeman put out a great article about him today on The Athletic. I hope it was because of us all asking why he is pitching every time he blew a game.

-  Maybe if they kept the starter in the 3rd time through the order more often when they're rolling they wouldn't burn out the bullpen so bad. I think analytics has gone too far in this case and in the long run it would be beneficial to have the starters go 80-90 pitches even to keep the bullpen fresh.

- Miranda has been as clutch of a hitter that they have on the team. The guy has George Brett vibes. I loved how Correa went to management and told them not to trade Miranda. That's leadership even if he wont be back next year.

- The team is due to put up 10+ runs soon. The last time they scored 10+ was June 27th. Since June 1st they have given up 10+ 9 times and scored 10+ only twice. Baseball has a way of evening out for the most part.

- Speaking of evening out, the Twins are owed a win or at least a second chance at a win after the horrific OVERTURNED call against the Blue Jays. I don't really know what Sanchez was supposed to do in that situation other than what he did. I thought it was a textbook play and somehow they overturned it. I'm very glad Rocco stood up for his team like he did, I think that's the most emotion I've seen out of him.

- I still think they're the best team in this division this year. Cleveland would be about 6 games back if Pagan didn't blow 4 against them earlier in the year. Hopefully Rocco has learned his lesson and they go on a run.

Go Twins!

Troy

A blowout  of 10 runs or more would be great ...

A 10 game winning streak would be better ...

Management hasn't shown me any indication that they have learned their lessons  ...

Thanks for your thoughts ,

This is my story and I'm sticking too it ...

Agree with most of your points. I hope the Twins can come back to win the division. If they don't its time for a new coaching staff IMHO.

So Sonny Gray has been an injury riddled pitcher for years - little IL visits here and there. Bundy has had major arm problems. Archer has had major arm problems & apparently an iffey hip. Maeda, Ober, Winder, Paddock are all out or have been out with arms issues. Ryan’s in his first year in the Bigs & coming off lightly used Covid years. If guys like Duffey & Pagan (few times Thielbar & Jax) performed at reasonable levels 75% of the time we would have 6-8 more wins and nobody would have heartburn over how starters are being used/protected. Guys have to perform and complaining about front office miscalculations or Baldelli’s inability to handle a staff are old!

Maybe the complainants about Rocco’s handling of the staff are getting old because he’s been mismanaging the staff for so long?   If he’s the manager next year, the Twins need to get 2-4 guys who can pitch 2-3 middle innings.

The MLB leader has 24 starts this year.
Bundy has 20, on pace for 30 starts
Archer has 20. on pace for 30 starts
Ryan has 19. on pace for 27 starts.
Gray has 17. on pace for 24 starts.

I'm not sure if your world is realistic based on what you're writing. Do you expect relievers to never allow a home run?

Jax has 44 appearances. In 39 of those, he allowed 0-1 runs...
Thielbar has 46 appearances. In 43 of those, he's allowed 0-1 runs... and only 1 of the games where he's allowed more than 1 run has occurred in his last 44 appearances.
Why not throw Jhoan Duran under the bus like Thielbar and Jax? Duran has 3 games where he's allowed more than 1 run too.
We ditched Joe Smith, who had only allowed multiple earned runs twice this year, lol. 20% of the runs Smith allowed was from the fielders knocking balls down with concrete gloves.

Perhaps you think that's sustainable and good relief pitchers are guaranteed to go out there and go 3 up and 3 down all the time?

In any case, Baldelli has been afforded several reliable relievers. He elected to use Duffey and Pagan all the time instead of giving Bundy or Archer another inning. Duffey still has the 3rd most innings of our relievers...

I didn't say a blowout, just said scoring 10+ runs. Scored 9 the next day btw

I agree a 10 game winning streak would be better.

I don't have much confidence in management either, hopefully the starters keep telling Rocco to stay in the dugout.

Thanks for contributing
