I think the Twins almost have to protect high upside guys like Chalmers, Javier, and Celestino. There are way too many MLB teams who aren't really trying to compete and seem like they would be willing to draft and hold onto high-risk/high-reward players in the hopes of stealing talent that could really be good a couple years down the road.

That also requires the bad teams somehow developing these very raw players. Javier would be horrendous as an MLB player next year. Horrendous.

With 26 spots this next year, I would be worried about clubs like Detroit and Miami stashing a high upside player and then having 3 more years to develop them.

Jax might be OK, but he is just one of many.

Duran - must

Raley - be interesting to see if they can trade either Cave or Wade today, otherwise it might be a mistake so pass.

I agree on Chambers upside is too high, so keep

Javier - may need one more year - but we do not have a high upside SS in the system, unless Lewis can stick there.

Celestino is probably too raw and too far away to be stashed for a year.

Rijo is tough, just do not know enough about him.

Some interesting names, here. Two MIGHT be added during the season (Kirilloff and Rooker). It always pains me to see players just walk (i.e. Gonsalves is one, Stewart may be another). You wish you could've gotten something, anything. But, hey, who ever knows.

agreed, two years ago they could have traded Gonzo, Stewart, Jay and Romero and probably have gotten a really good player, instead they have a struggling Romero to show for them.

Also I have been preaching the need to trade some of these minors league prospect because the day of wrecking was coming (adding all of them to the 40 man or possibly losing them)

With that being said.

I would protect Duran (IMO he would/could be the first players selected if he isn't protected.

Blankenhorn,Raley and Rijo.

I take back my earlier post, they need 5 open spots, right?

two starting pitchers, a catcher, a first baseman, and a RP.

It's been a fun year so far, GO Twins.

I think they have to protect anyone they sent to the AFL...otherwise, it was a showcase for other teams. That seems like a strange lack of strategy.

Yes, but there are still others on the 40-man that they could still drop if they decide to add more players... for instance, if they need another spot, maybe Cave gets DFAd (they have a few guys who could fit into that category, including Wisler and such).

Do people really want random guys more than Cave? They shouldn't.

The same Jake Cave that has a WAR of (2.3/2.4) for his career 163 games? It is crazy awesome that the Twins are so good they can just cut major league players that are 2 wins above replacement for a season instead of trying to get something for them in return.

I feel like it's going to be 3 or 4: Duran, Chalmers, Raley, & Blankenhorn (and Chalmers is the most on the bubble for me). Duran is an easy call, Raley is likely MLB-ready and would almost certainly be selected, and Blankenhorn is close enough that a bad team might be willing to stash him. Chalmers is still wild to be effective, but again: a bad team might take a flier on him.

I would not be stunned if it was only Raley & Duran. I'm increasingly of the opinion that Jax doesn't have the peripherals to make a team want to dedicate a spot on their 26-man roster for the whole year and he'll slide through, but I could be very wrong.

feels like the decision on this comes down to protecting high-upside arms and ready for their debut position players; for everyone else the value of the 40-man spot is too high (and so is the value on the 26-man roster)

Cave was a bad example... but I used him because I'd be shocked if he was to be DFAd. But there are other guys on the 40 that could be removed still if they don't want to risk losing an extra guy or two and still plan to add more free agents too. Teams leave guys that they can drop later if need be.

Was a bad example. Didn't want to pick the name of anyone who they might actually consider dropping later if needed.

I also like Moran better than most on this site.He had a K 9 last year of 13 but a horrible WHIP.He doesn’t throw real hard but he gets such good movement he K’s a lot of guys.Personally I would rather have Moran on the 40 man than Wisler.Wisler has one great pitch is 27 and has no options.Moran has two good pitches is 22 and has a full set of options. If they think they can fix Wisler why can’t they fix Moran?I don’t get it.I think Jovani is underrated but I guess we will see how this plays out soon enough.

I agree on Moran and have been closely following his career from his first season. He had injury issues from May-July but came on strong the second half at Pensacola. Possibly he could play a role in the Twins bullpen next season.

I'll be curious to see if the 26th roster spot causes any noticeable change in terms of guys who get protected. Having an extra spot would seem to make holding onto guys who shouldn't be in the majors a lot easier for teams that aren't trying to compete. I would specifically be looking at high upside younger guys who are clearly a couple of years away (Celestino and Javier are prime Twins examples).

Luke Raley, Dakota Chalmers, Jhoan Duran, Gilberto Celestino, and Travis Blankenhorn were the adds.

Raley is redundant given the current status of the 40. Makes me think there will be a corner OF or 2 traded this winter.

Here's the article on the additions:
