Addison Reed in Rochester:

4.0 IP, 11 hits, 6 ER, 3 HR, 13.50 ERA

*reaches for vomit bag*

Just go get Kimbrel already. I'm totally off the fence on that acquisition.

In happier news, Miguel Sano is only striking out in... 50%... of his plate appearances...

Damn, I'm really bad at this.

Possibly. You should look into it.

I think you're on to something. The left thumb is the injured one.

He's a veteran, he doesn't have to prove anything because he hits the ball really far sometimes. He'll be right back to his 38.5% strikeout rate from last year.

Wait, I think I'm even worse at this.

Most concerning about Sano is there is still no good explanation for why he was so terrible last year. "Not physically fit" sounds more like an excuse. Emotional offseason before the year? Puhleaze.

In any case, there was no reason to keep him in the minors any longer. He was hitting in the minors like he always had, which is to say very well. His stay in the minors was on the cusp of looking punitive.

I suspect Sano will start hot and then taper off as his bad habits kick in again unless Cruz (or better yet Baldelli) can keep him focused.

Seems like the Vikings have had a lot of Sano-like players in the past twenty years.

They aren't going to give up a draft pick now that they only have to wait 19 more days.

I wouldn't call it punitive unless he ran out of rehab time and got optioned. He missed spring training plus a quarter of the season, and his strikeout/walk rate was pretty abysmal at AA/AAA which suggests he's not seeing the ball well yet. It's perfectly reasonable to give him the full rehab time to shake the rust off and make sure he's set up for quicker success when he gets here.

Sano has played 10 games in the minors. In 44 plate appearances, he has struck out 14 times (32%).

If you are referring to AAA numbers only, that's a pretty dang small sample size of 3 games ... a sample size that has his BA at .308 and OPS at .819, mind you.

I agree it's a very SSS and if Sano didn't have a history of this exact problem, I would ignore it completely.

But it's a little unsettling to see a player of his capability and age striking out that often against MiLB pitchers.

It could be nothing more than statistical noise in a SSS but I don't like seeing it.

Personally I don't put much weight on his numbers in A-ball. I expect dominance from any major leaguer against kids living on fastballs and sketchy secondary pitches.

Yeah, he should post video game numbers at any level lower than AA.

I actually was never on the fence, I always wanted him.

I am on the fence now though, by this point I have next to no faith that he wouldn't be completely rusty and lost most of the year. I'd be happy with a three year deal though so the team has him when he's back to form next year.

The good news is that Reed has been so bad that there's probably no way the team can rationalize putting him on the 25-man. If he was throwing 87 MPH but still somehow junkballing AAA hitters on his way to a 4.75 ERA, they'd probably still find a way to justify a call up.
