According to his agent, via twitter, LHP Andrew Vasquez will be recalled by the Twins today.

Presumably, it will be at the expense of RHP Chase De Jong who needed 46 pitches to complete the ninth inning last night.

Vasquez has pitched just once so far for Rochester. He has given up two hits and a walk, but in 1 1/3 innings, he struck out four batters.

UPDATED: It appears that De Jong has an option remaining so he can also just be optioned.

Another interesting and somewhat surprising move. If what Seth suggests is true, that was a really short leash on DeJong, One inning and gone! Then again, as someone wrote on another thread, he had about a half-game's number of pitches in that one inning.

I loved collecting cards when I was a kid. I invested heavily into 1988 Donruss and my favorite non-Twins card was probably Tom Newell. He only pitched one inning for the Phillies in 1987 and he had a 36.00 ERA which I found very funny when I was 12 years old. I thought of that when I noticed Chase DeJong had a matching ERA for the Twins this year. The good news for Chase is that last night wasn't his only big league inning, unlike our old friend Tom Newell who never pitched in the big leagues again.

No better time to DFA someone and try to slip them to the minors than after a performance like DeJong put on last night.

I think the front office saw enough last night with DeJong including numerous innings last year and in the minors.  Glad they moved him quickly. Nothing to see there.  Move along.

Glad they didn't bring up Duffy...

What are the possibilities he's outright released, that this was his last look for the Twins?

Makes sense. Only reason De Jong was up was becuase he was called up on the 9th day of the season. He is an AAAA pitcher, and we have plenty of those. I don't think he gets claimed anyway.

Hopefully he wasn't recalled for e.coli contamination. :/

There is no need to DFA De Jong, as he has an option. Vazquez does not need his 40 man spot.

If he is DFAd and if he does clear waivers, he can still choose to become a free agent, and I would think he would explore that. I also think that the Twins would be happy if he did choose to stay.

Jeremy Nygaard tells me that De Jong has an option remaining. So they can just option him for now.

Can we stop with the E coli slamming? It's nothing to take lightly.

Shiga toxin–producing E. coli (STEC) cause approximately 100,000 illnesses, 3,000 hospitalizations, and 90 deaths annually in the United States.

This seems to have become the norm with the Twins and many other teams. An almost constant switching out of the back end of the bullpen to serve the perceived needs of the next day or so. I almost miss the days of Terry Mulholand, who served all those needs in one person.

Good move. Are there people that don't know the rules didn't allow many of the other relief pitchers to be brought up this early? That's why it was DeJong.

And, I hope they use AAA like the Dodgers do, and bring people up and down as needed.

Makes sense. Dick and Justin were talking about the need for another left-hander in the pen last night, as Mejia was struggling to throw strikes and Rogers is just one man.
