Thank you Nick. Didn't realize you were a Mighty Miller.

Joe looks great this year. He has kept his body in good shape and he still runs well and has the same great solid approach at the plate. I think he could still be a very productive player for a lot longer.

I wish the Twins would have utilized his arm and athleticism more by transitioning him to 3B or LF instead of first, but he surely is a great first basemen.

I'm going to try to enjoy watching him as much as possible this season in case it's his last in a Twins uniform.

Well done Nick.

I've got him clocked at 1991, but I'll admit a margin of error.....anyways, who's counting. Great article!

Couple years ago a lot people talked about Mauer and said "If he could just be...".We all knew he wasn't a power hitter. Now, with his gold glove caliber defense, he has become just as valuable as guys who hit 30 HR but are not great on defense.I'd say the the last year-plus, he has certainly become that "If he could just be..." player.Hit .300.Get on base.Get clutch hits. The defense.Show young players what a professional at bat looks like (I'm talking to you Miguel).Show young players how to carry themselves as a pro.Provide a great role model for young kids in our state. Thank you Joe.

OH.And anyone who considers themselves a true Twins fan, which obviously everyone on this site is, HAS to appreciate a guy who ranks in Twins history with names like Killebrew (times on base) and Carew/Puckett (hits).

I Lost count somewhere around ......5

Some would blame lack of dedication to the cause

I thinkyou are just being respectful of the Twins Daily site where math is generally frowned upon, and counting is veers dangerously towards math (although the no-math rule might be more of a game threads policy).

Thank you all for the kind words! Really glad so many people have enjoyed the piece.

And for the record, it was definitely at 2,000 words exactly when I published it! Subsequent edits may have changed that, as there were undoubtedly a number of typos because I churned out the entire thing in the course of one ~3-hour game while kinda half-watching the TV.

Thank you Nick. Didn't realize you were a Mighty Miller.

Only for one year. I transferred to St. Louis Park as a sophomore and graduated an Oriole. But the blue and orange shall always remain close to my heart.

Great piece and congrats to Mauer. There was a time I thought he had a shot at 3,000 hits and then a stretch where I thought 2,000 was a pipedream. It's been a rollercoaster, but I hope he can string together another 3-5 years and give himself a shot at the Hall.

Always been a Mauer fan, and never a hater. Never got down on him or blamed him for his injuries. Disappointed sure, but never down on him. To be fully transparent, at one time I thought he was done and should probably retire. His re-surgance has been a great story! As is this article!

I have been frustrated at times for the lack of power for someone to big and naturally athletic, especially when I saw a ball right down the middle he let go by. (Usually followed by lacing a single somewhere or coaxing a BB). But his career and contributions as an outstanding hitter and defender, both behind the plate and at 1B, should never be discounted simply because he has never been a hulking power hitter.

I spent a lot of years watching guys like Wally Joyner, Mark Grace and Keith Hernandez play 1B and contribute to their teams in so many ways despite not being the classic, slugging 1B. Add in what Joe accomplished as maybe the best pure hitting catcher of all time, and you have a ballplayer who's real greatness may be diminished, somewhat, only by unreal expectations placed on him.

I truly hope he repeats what he did last season...and his early start is greatly encouraging this year...and does it for another couple of years to cement his place as one of the greatest Twins ever.

"Nice catch Hayes...don't ever f*****g do it again."

Does Joe Mauer have the record for most games using the same walk up song?

I couldn't be a player because of bad eyesight, so I decided to be an umpire instead.

Well said Nick!
I'll still never understand how so people can hate our hometown hero so much. I'm with you, and will be enjoying the ride this season.

Mauer is a great hitter. Good for him.

One of the best opening day rosters in years. Now go get 'em.
