I'm not sure why people are including Royce Lewis in trade scenarios because he supposedly won't be up for 5 years. When a team has really hit on a #1 draft pick (like we're hoping the Twins have), even the high school players reach the big leagues really quick.

Let's look at two recent top draft picks who were infielders drafted out of high school:

Carlos Correa (#1 overall in 2012): 2012 half season: Rk, 2013 season: A, 2014 season A+, 2015: AA/AAA/MLB. MLB debut at age 20.

Manny Machado (#3 overall in 2010): 2010 half season Rk/A-, 2011 season: A/A+, 2012 season: AA/MLB. MLB debut at age 19.

Lewis spit his draft-year season between Rookie and A ball. Putting him on track to reach the majors as early as 2019 or 2020 if all goes to plan. That's right in the middle of the Twins winning window. Of course, plenty could go wrong, but you don't trade a #1 overall draft pick who has Carlos Correa/Manny Machado potential unless he shows you some major flaws.

If I'm the Twins, Lewis is absolutely *untouchable.

*untouchable, of course, qualified to mean any "sane"/realistic trade scenario.

Mod note: TD has an article on the subject of Michael Pineda now - please continue the discussion of that player there. http://twinsdaily.co...michael-pineda/

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

What type of player do you think fill-in corner outfielders or 4th outfielders are?

The way I look at it, the Twins "nothing but rain drops" outfield is all center fielder quality. Varying degrees obviously, but that's what they are. It's nice to have a 4th OF-er who is also CF above average, but they already have that and corners are way easier to fill.

Granite is a 4th outfielder for the Twins. Look at who the Twins have had in that role recently: Sam Fuld, Logan Schafer, Jordan Schafer, Danny Santana, Shane Robinson, Darin Mastroianni, Clete Thomas... Bench outfielders and corner guys are definitely a dime-a-dozen.

You're worrying too much about this and if he's a guy Pittsburgh is targeting, I say good for them and him.

Not worried, just a preference. I've repeated I'd be happy with the trade as-is, but depth is important too

This may turn out to be nothing, but according to MLB Trade Rumors, Darvish has been in contact with Gimenez about what it's like to play in Minnesota.  Like I said, it could very well be nothing, but if it isn't .... ?!  A possible deal could be farther along than people realize.

Good.At least a dialogue is happening.Likely leads to nothing but perhaps there is hope that something comes to fruition based on past relationships.

The only reason I don't trade Gordon, Jay and Zach for Cole, is that I have something in works for Archer or possibly one of the Mets starters.

I do hate that is he is Boras guy and it will be next to impossible to have him longer than 2 years but I still make the move.

Well ... do we have a starter yet from these meetings? Unless we trade someone off the 40-man, room for only one more, right?

Color me ... skeptical ... at this point.

It's starting to feel like this is going to happen. :)

Would be great if it did, or, one of the other big targets would be good too, but Darvish would be ideal.

Give me 4 years of Zack Greinke if the DBacks are looking to get rid of him for a reasonable prospect haul instead of 6+ with Darvish.

I'd rather take Darvish and keep the prospects and not to mention Greinke is already 34.

I actually think they are going:

6/144

with Darvish. Those last two years will suck....but the first four will hopefully be worth it.

In the next 4 years Greinke is making:

Age 34: $34M

Age 35: $34.5M

Age 36: $35M

Age 37: $35M

144/6 for Darvish only comes out to $24M a season and would take him through age 36 just for reference

I think he ends up with the Mariners but I hope your right.Looks like the Yankees might get Cole.Twins should have pulled the trigger if Pittsburgh asked for Gordon, Jay and Granite. That can't be a true rumor right?

Interesting at least

I cringe to think that the Twins settled for Rodney as their target reliever although I do understand why they did it.It's unfortunate that they didn't make an offer to Kintzler or were able to sign Cishek.

Doesnt seem likely that it's true, but at least it's a Pirates fan making up the lowball offer.

I'm with you. Close call, but I would prefer Cole to Darvish in this situation. Gordon is a tough guy to part with, but Granite and Jay are not hard to replace.

Also, making a deal for both Cole and Darvish is not against the rules.

Just wondering, if we get Darvish, or one of the good option B arms, that does it, right?

I know there is talk about a second signing or a trade idea, but Dervish, Santana, Berrios, Gibson and Mejia/May/everyone else has to be the way we go.

Would they really.make a second signing or trade prospects for a second SP at that point? Asking in general. I think they'd stay status quo and run with what they have, keep developing the guys in AAA and AA and know they have the depth to make a move later

I don't know, a trade and a free agent signing are basically using two different resources, one uses prospects and one uses money, it's not like these two dis-similar moves are going to double down and deplete either of those resources extensively.

I guess my view is that if the Twins were to sign a big time free agent (Darvish is the only one I see as big time this year) you'd think it would indicate that the team thinks their window of opportunity is open now. Wouldn't you want to give yourself the best chance to win now? Why waste 2018 and only next year move to shore up the remaining rotation holes? Especially when there is a trend this year where the bottom feeders are open for business. I don't recall a year where this many quality arms are available for trade.

The aggressive teams aren't just making one move, they are making them in bunches and for the most part they are working in tandem.
