During the 2002 through 2010 seasons Gardenhire received more weighted Manager of the Year votes than any other AL manager, and I think more than any other manager in either league. Yes, I know there were four more years after that but it's difficult to get MOY votes when one is managing bad teams. The point is that his managing skills were very highly-regarded by those voters.

I don't see this job lasting long.

Not because of Gardenhire, just because that team looks like it's due to be a loser for a long stretch and the manager (and probably GM) will be out of there just prior to getting back on track.

I don't see it lasting long either. It has a fiasco of a year and Gardy not back in 2019 written all over it. Tigers are going to be really bad no matter who is at the controls.

Congratulations to Gardy, but hiring him seems like confirmation that Detroit isn’t worried about winning a playoff series.

?

The Twins never spent the money to win in the playoffs. They spent just enough to beat up on the division.

Justin Morneau, Jason Bartlett and Michael Cuddyer are 3 I can think of off the top of my head. They all sat far too long while some washed up veteran got playing time.
And yes, Gardy definitely berated young players in the press. No, I don’t have links to 10-15 year old articles. Ask anyone here who was around during the BYTO days. They’ll remember.

Couldn’t stand the way he questioned the manhood of pitchers like Slowey and Baker who turned out to have serious injuries.

This is true, and it was deserved at the time, but it’s like having a good race car for several years before major changes in drag or engines. Continuing to do it the same way won’t work.

I contend that others refused to accept that the Twins actually were a good team. The votes were cast because others believed Gardy was weaving a pig's ear into a silk scarf rather than being the manager of a solid team.

Personally, I liked Gardy as a person and as a manager. IMO, a few comments he made here and there in the press were greatly exagerated and misconstrued. But these are also memories and viewpoints that are irrelevant.

Congrats! But I just don't see the fit. He's a good baseball guy who is going to be stuck with a sinking and rebuilding roster and I'm just not sure it's his forte.

But best of luck Gardy...except when you face the Twins!

Gardy played young guys over vets nearly all the time. He didn't throw players under the bus, he kept most of it in-house. Molitor has done far more of that in his three years than Gardy did his entire time. The Gardy bashing has gotten out of hand over the years. He was a very good manager.

A. Good managers have rings.Very good managers have many rings.Gardy has zero as a manager, including in post-seasons when the Twins were favorite and spotted both the MVP and Cy Young award winners. He was very good in going belly up against the Yankees. That much I give you.

B. Pat Neshek, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Matt Garza, Delmon Young, Kyle Lohse, et al. would beg to disagree about that under bus throwing thing and the keeping most of the stuff "in house".

I guess Twins' fans have come to accept regular season wins as good enough. Not the Red Sox and Nationals. I tend to think like their front offices. Sometimes, the manager has a good team, and gets in the way of it doing better because he has people playing out of position all the time, and not for injury's sake. Sometimes he just gets in the way of letting players be themselves. I am glad Gardenhire is taking his way to the Tigers. My bet is he makes 2 years at the most.

Not a good comp Seth. Torre took over a very good playoff team. Gardy is taking over the worst team in the league, just starting a re-build with a middling farm system.

In other words, familiar territory for Mr. Gardenhire.

Not quite.Gardenhire took a decent team from Kelly and ran with it wining just enough to pay the bills for the new ballpark until he ran it to the ground and made it the worst team in the league.

Well, it probably won't make much difference in the Tigers' fortunes for the next couple years. They could wind up threatening their 43-119 from 2003.
