This afternoon, the Twins announced that they had been awarded outfielder Kenny Wilson.

When the Twins DFAd Darin Mastroianni on Sunday, the Blue Jays claimed him. To make room on their 40 man roster, they DFAd Kenny Wilson. So, in a sense, the Twins were able to trade a 28-year-old fifth outfielder for a 24 year old AA outfielder who is blessed with a lot of talent.

So, who is Kenny Wilson?

Wilson was the Blue Jays 2nd round pick in 2008 out of high school in Tampa. To say he's moved up the ladder slowly would be more than fair. He spent 2008 and 2009 in the GCL. He spent 2010, 2011 and 2012 in the Midwest League (Low A). He ended 2012 with 29 games in Hi-A. Last year, he played in AA where he hit .259/.333/.375 (.708), arguably the best numbers of his career.

He has never hit more than 19 doubles or five home runs. In 2012, he stole 53 bases.

So, he appears to be a typical Twins outfield prospect, a speedy athletic type. To this point, he has not put up very impressive numbers.

So, what else do you know about Kenny Wilson? Please feel free to add to this forum.

He is on Twitter at @ItsKennyWilson.

Seth, I don't know anything about Kenny Wilson other than what you just told us. But I'm struggling to reconcile your "blessed with a lot of talent" phrase with everything you wrote after that. When I first heard about this my reaction was that he is just minor league filler that we acquired in a tit-for-tat that was maybe meant to send a subtle message to the Jays.

A 24 year old OF with a .210/.239/.306 (.545) slash line in AA.

Um, why would they pick him up? Any help here? Are we shy in our AA OF?

I think the critical point on Wilson's bat, aside from whatever shin related issues he might still face, is that 2014 will be the first year he commits full-time to batting from the right side.

Probably a good thing too. His splits since 2011:

edit: I should clarify, I don't know for sure if he's committed. I assumed because he hasn't logged a single PA from the left side yet in 2014

edit2: 2012 he started RH batting full-time, not 2014. I read the splits wrong.

Call it filler if you'd like, but the Twins are void of speedy talent in the outfield, aside from their two DL guys (Granite and Buxton). Quick glances at box scores seem to show that most starting CFs in the system right now are career INF guys or corner OFs (plus Kepler - probably destined for LF or 1B)...not ideal.
I think it's a good idea to stock up on some young players who can reasonably project to be CF depth for the big league club some day. Playing 30 y.o. 2B in CF on the farm doesn't do anything for the org in the long run.

Plus speed. Plus arm. Stopped switch hitting and only bats right-handed. No power. Questionable bat.

Sounds like Aaron Hicks-lite. On his first option year, fourth outfielder-type.

Thanks for the info -- that makes him slightly more encouraging. But the early returns on his switch are not good in 2014 -- his BB and K rates, which took a dip upon moving up to AA last year, have gotten even worse in the early going (zero walks so far in 68 PA). And his overall 2014 OPS looks like his dreadful LHB OPS before.

Also, I don't like a "speed guy" mentioned with "shin issues" either!

Better him than an open 40 man spot, though, especially with infielders covering CF at both AA and AAA. (Still need a CF at AAA?)

Looking at his numbers, he's roster filler until Buxton is ready to take the AA job. At that point, Wilson either earns a promotion to AAA or becomes the fourth outfielder in AA. I'd put long odds on the former.

Fourth outfielder-type isn't a good profile when you're struggling to establish yourself at AA. Fuld, Mastro, and even Clete Thomas were all fairly solid .750 OPS hitters at AAA. Wilson's best has been .720 at A-ball, and he's at .670 career at AA and trending down, even after ditching the left handed batting.

As I read b-r.com's splits pages, he batted solely from the right side in 2012 and 2013.

I see we signed Kenny Wilson the other day. It says he is a speedster. Is he any good?
