In the days of 9, 10 or maybe even 11 man pitching staffs there was space for a right handed bench bat. Randy Ruiz could have had a career 40 years ago. Possibly Colabello also. He would at least have been given a long enough look.

Colabello's only hope is to be on a team that has an opening at 1B. That isn't the Twins. He is the sensible player to remove from the 40.
Not true. The OF is covered with Mastro and Kubel (and even Colabello). The alternative to a guy like Colabello is carrying 2 futility IF'ers or 2 backup catchers. Those players are basically worthless compared to having a legitimate bat off the bench or a part time platoon DH. And having a 13 man pitching staff is also pointless.

More importantly if Kubel makes the team as DH then you basically have to have a RH'd bat to pair with him. Would you rather have Mastro getting those AB's or a guy like Colabello?

    Concur.

I would go so far as to say keeping such players around is how you lose 290 games over three seasons.

Double concur on Colabello and that type, those sorts bring nothing to a good MLB team. Unfortunately the Twins people their roster with them.

I would rather have Mastro in LF and Willingham at DH and I am hoping Hicks or someone else gets Mastro's roster spot. Collabello needs to hit much better to make up for the defensive cost. A bench bat will help the Twins but it has to be a guy at a Jim Thome level.

Let's hope Hicks comes around so we do not have to employ the Mastro's of this world and just who in the hell is going to be a Jim Thome level player that the Twins can sign?
