Thread: Roster Moves?

    Roster Moves?

What do you think will be the next roster move we make? Trades, signings,or calling people up/down. And don't say arcia and J-Will. We all know that will happen already. Thoughts?

Willingham will be back. Picture Arcia getting an extended workout in the minors.

    There is no 40-man spot.

The Twins have to decide on Hicks and Florimon. If they send down Florimon, he goes off the 40-man.

Do the Twins do anything with Swarzak or Burton? They need to keep Tonkin. Guerrier is available, not to mention other bodies.

Nothing CAN happen to the rotation. Too expensive to give away. No good demoting them to the bullpen. Just have to sink or swim.

They are in an obviously foreseeable mess with Correia and Pelfrey.

Trades and signings are not going to happen right now.

Anyway, Jorge Polanco and Levi Michael need to be in New Britain.

My prediction: Pelf to the 15 day DL due to shoulder injury, Deduno to the rotation, Pressly gets called up.

    1) How do you figure this? It seems inevitable that they both get sent down, but they both have options left, would they really take Florimon off the 40-man, doesn't seem likely with the limited SS depth.

    2) Guerrier has a May 8th deadline to be called up, but has yet to be placed on the roster. I would guess that Raley and/or Wilson will be attempted to sneak through waivers, opening up a spot for Guerrier .

    3) Pelfrey went down to the minors last year, he can go down again this year to right himself again with a remaining option or a DL rehab, if he agrees to it.

Nuñez for Florimon with Escobar becoming the principle shortstop is the move that would have been made already if Nuñez had not injured himself. If Nuñez can get back on the field, the move will happen soon. I wrote in another thread that the Twins are kind of stuck regarding the rotation as long as the current guys are healthy. Nolasco (4 years), Hughes (3 years) and Pelfrey (2 years) all have multiple years to go. Correia was their best, most consistent pitcher last year. He's been okay or better for three of his five starts, although his upside is limited to about what he did last year.

I'm not so sure about this. For the first time since forever, Gardy and the front office have been publicly forthcoming and proactive in declaring that necessary moves will be made- they're in win-now mode. I could easily forsee another trade to acquire a SS still in the offing (Didi, Franklin?).

This is pretty much right, although I think they have their strong doubts about either becoming the full-time guy at SS. Pelfrey could repeat a trip to the minors like last year- clearly there's something wrong with him- which opens up a spot in the rotation. SPs are dropping like flies around baseball, is there a Doumit-like trade out there to move Correia back to the NL? On the SS front, Arizona is floundering and may well be willing to settle for prospects in a trade for Gregorius.

I have to think Florimon is going to be the first change. I'm still trying to figure out why he's getting at bats. Hicks, I suspect will end up in Rochester as well. I'm not as certain on the pitching front. Those guys are under contract and will get a long leash.

Jokin, the trip to the minors for Pelf was one start in Cedar Rapids on an injury rehab. He can consent to be optioned, but he has to agree to that arrangement. I don't know if anyone has even broached the subject to the player.

I understand all of the details surrounding him from last year and the consent issues regarding his remaining option. But knowing all of this, and given the faith and the limb the Twins went out on, to sign him initially, and then to re-sign him, the onus is kind-of on Pelfrey to "make this right", because clearly, something is not right with him currently. His velocity is down and the Twins will simply will have to do something drastic, ie, DL, bullpen, etc., if the current pattern repeats itself much longer.

I have to wonder if we won't see some sort of move to open up a spot for Meyer, especially if he has another dominant start, even if it is only for 2 starts. I think that the FO might see a benefit just from a ticket sales stand point to get Meyer some starts while the team is in contention.

The team isn't "in contention" and Meyer would have no effect on ticket sales. Besides which no MLB franchise would handle a prized prospect on that basis, ever.

Florimon will be the first to go, no doubt. It's bizarre that he was Plan A to begin with- the only explanation aside from sheer gross incompetence is that the Twins tried but failed to replace him. Of course, the internal options are pretty bad.

So far as Pelfrey, the Twins made an unforced, $12 million error in resigning him and the only mildly surprising part is that in blew up in their faces immediately. They really deserve the difficulties they're facing here, ditto for Florimon. Bad decisions shouldn't be rewarded.

Upcoming home games 4 starts out. This is the closest upcoming time in which he can get 2 starts in, during one homestand, and falls closely to his current schedule:

May 13, Tuesday night vs. Red Sox
May 18, Sunday afternoon vs. Mariners

This is markedly not true. How soon we forget, even the Twins have gone down this road before http://twinsdaily.com/content.php/12...SU-to-the-Met:

With that track record, perhaps his rapid ascent, and the excitement that went with it, might have been anticipate. The Twins selected Bane with their first pick, eleventh overall in the 1973 amateur draft. A short time later Bane joined a very select group of only 20 players that were drafted and went on to play pro ball directly out of high school or college with no minor league experience. Amid a great deal of publicity and fan fare, Bane made his major league debut as a starter against the Kansas City Royals on July 4, 1973 at Met Stadium. Almost 46,000 fans attended for their first glimpse of the the first round pick pitch.

Bane didn’t disappoint that day. He threw 7 innings allowing 3 hits, 3 walks and striking out 3, but manager Frank Quilici took him out after 7 innings with the Twins trailing 1-0.

The Pelfrey signing, which was stupid when made, looks worse every day. Don't worry though, the really good pitchers in the minors will earn their way up at some point....somehow. Making room for a 35 year old RP (when you have enough RP in your system), by moving decent younger players off the 40 man? At this point in the rebuild? Insanity. Just awful roster management.
    Lighten up Francis....

Five minutes after Nunez is pronounced healthy, he'll be called up. I'd expect Florimon to be optioned at that time.

Arcia is starting rehab games today, but it wouldn't be a huge surprise if he spends a few more weeks in Rochester working on timing after that. Willingham hasn't swung a bat and I'd guess he's a late May return at the earliest.

Guerrier is probably the next up after Nunez; whether he takes Tonkin's or Burton's spot is still up for grabs.

Nunez for Florimon as soon as Nunez is healthy. Willingham for Hermann. A pitcher will have to go down, likely Tonkin for Arcia.

The big question is who is going to get at bats? Would be disappointed to see Pinto's at bats drop, but think it is inevitable with Hermann going down. Expect to see Joe get a few more days off once Willingham and Arcia are back. Kubel will likely sit more against lefties.

I think Hicks will get one more shot once Fuld's bat cools off. Don't see any reason to send him down.

Really don't see any moves in the rotation until June. One of the starters will likely have a DL stint, which will give Meyer, Johnson or May a shot.

It appears that there is a full commitment, forget the rebuild, to try to do whatever it takes, come hell or high water, to make a run at .500 in 2014. (And in this case, if Brooks Raley is the one moved, no one should shed a tear). And it can work out to the benefit of the rebuild if the Twins cut bait on a non-performing starter and bring up Meyer sooner rather than later (barring a trade or DFA, he'll have to replace someone like Kenny on the 40-man.). Early on, I kind-of figured that Meyer wouldn't come up until Correia was moved, now I'm more optimistic that it could happen before then.
