After starting the season 0-4, the Twins won their last two games and scored a combined 16 runs, games started by Jered Weaver and Dan Haren. It was a full night in the Twins minor league system as well. For much more information on many Twins minor leaguers, be sure to listen to last night’s Twins Minor League Weekly podcast. ...

The Twins got Win #1 in Game #5, and that has to be a relief to all the players, coaches, the manager and the front office. As a fan, it’s kind of nice as well! A very nice 6-5, come-from-behind win. At various times, Josh Willingham, Chris Parmelee, Jamey Carroll, Glen Perkins and Matt Capps played hero. Jeff Gray gets the win! Congrats to the Twins on the win.

The minor league affiliates won three of their four games on Wednesday. In unusual fashion, two of the Twins affiliates played games in the morning. A couple of pitchers with limited time with the Twins pitched well for the Red Wings, while a future Twins player returned to action. The Rock Cats gave up some runs, but a top prospect added another double. The Miracle held on to a lead and getting a big home run from a guy who homered in a game with the Twins late in spring training. And a Minnesota native had a nice game with a lot of strikeouts to record a win for the Snappers.

The Twins had an off day, but their minor league affiliates were all playing. There was a game-winning home run… an extra-innings walk off wild pitch, a couple of strong starts, some great bullpen work. And yes, Miguel Sano was very good again today! Find out why Brian Dozier got a day off here (and at the same time be listening to the interview with him on the SethSpeaks Weekly Minnesota Twins Podcast).

Twins minor league affiliates had not won a game since Friday. All four affiliates lost on Saturday. Rochester was the only team to play on Sunday, but they lost. On Monday, the Twins affiliates were back to their winning ways as all four teams won. Not only that, but some of the organization’s top prospects either continued to hit or broke out a little bit. Eddie Rosario, Brian Dozier and Danny Santana continued to rake. Meanwhile, Miguel Sano had a special day, and Levi Michael and Aaron Hicks put together their first really good games with the bat. Who knows what will happen tomorrow, but here is what happened in the minors on Monday (and that one Sunday game):

The Twins lost 8-2 to the Orioles on Saturday night in what proved to be a tough day throughout the Twins organization. Including the Twins, the organization went a combined 0-5 on the day. Of course, that doesn’t mean there weren’t some highlights… just that there aren’t as many!

The Twins and the Red Wings are the only two teams that play on Easter with the three lower levels able to enjoy a day off on the holiday.

Here is what happened on Saturday in the parks of the Twins minor league affiliates:

Lily Rothman of Slate.com recently wrote a very interesting piece on the treatment of minor league baseball players and their plight to make ends meet.

Rothman noted that these “hidden underclass of workers” make a salary comprising of $1,100 a month and receive that pay for only half the year. As opposed to their major league brethren, minor leaguers have little or no protection as a working class.

There have been some players within the system who have championed for some labor changes. According to the article:

Day 2 in the Twins minor league system meant FIVE box scores to follow. In an unusual event, New Britain and Richmond had a scheduled double header. The Twins affiliates went 4-1 on the day. The Rochester Red Wings and New Britain Rock Cats are a combined 5-0 so far on the early season. As you will see every day throughout the season, here are the scores and highlights from the Twins minor league system.

    ROCHESTER 3, SYRACUSE 1

Scott Diamond had a frustrating 2011 season with the Red Wings (and in several starts with the Twins). His 2012 got off to a terrific start. The lefty threw 6.1 scoreless innings. He gave up four hits, walked one and struckout three. Carlos Gutierrez finished the seventh inning and then struckout the first two batters of the 8th inning. A triple, followed by a double, ended his night as the Red Wings clung to a 2-1 lead. Anthony Slama came in and got a strikeout to end the eighth. He gave up one hit in the 9th frame, but he struckout pinch-hitter Mark Teahen to end the game and record his first save. ...

All is well in the world. Spring Training is over and teams are in their affiliated cities. The beginning of the season means jersey selection, locker organization, paperwork and…walkout songs. This decision can be spur of the moment or have months of thought put into it. The reasons for choosing a particular song are unique to each guy. There are a few popular ways I have seen players do this in the past.

    Play on Words

Yesterday I was asking a few guys what they would be using for songs. Matt Summers told me he couldn’t think of anything so he went with “Summertime” by Kenny Chesney. This is clever for obvious reasons. A number of closers have used the song “Closing Time” in the past. Mitch Williams used the song “Wild Thing” to go along with his ‘style’ of pitching. I have had a tough time playing on a Scandinavian last name, so this one isn’t for me. ...

Which prospects will rise, and which will fall? Will any of the teams make the playoffs? They are questions that no one knows the answer to, but each of those answers start on Opening Day.

Below you’ll find the results of each of the Twins minor league games as well as some of the highlights. ...

As much as I love going to Twins games, there's something special about minor league baseball. It's intimate and personal. It's real and unadulterated -- both the good and the bad. Every year, the New Britain Rock Cats host a "welcome home" dinner for the team, the front office and the fans. This year, it was held at the New Britain Elks Lodge #957, just a stone's throw from New Britain stadium. Walking in, I was reminded of my own baseball past -- spaghetti dinners at the White Bear Lake VFW, with the veterans wanting to see what their $500 uniform sponsorship had purchased that season, and post-season American Legion awards banquets held in the basement of the Roseville American Legion.

Happy Minor League Opening Day to all of you!

In Rochester, the Red Wings will send veteran PJ Walters to the mound to face Mitch Atkins (and Bryce Harper) and the Syracuse Chiefs. New Britain will send Luke French to the mound against Richmond. Scott Baker makes the Opening Day start for the Ft. Myers Miracle. Eden Prairie native Madison Boer gets the starting nod for the Beloit Snappers.

I thought it would be fun to do some preseason minor league predictions and definitely encourage all of you to participate in the comments as well.

The Twins roster is set, and with that, the minor league rosters are set as well. It is an unusual season in that the minor league seasons start (a day) before the big league Opening Day. I may be in the minority, but I get just as excited about minor league Opening Day as I do about major league Opening Day (and I think Opening Day should be a national holiday!).

Pending last minute injuries or transactions, below are the Opening Day rosters for the Twins minor league affiliates, along with a very brief summary of what to look for. Please feel free to ask questions in the Comments section, and I'll be sure to try to answer as many as I can.

This blog was written by Twins minor league pitcher Tim Shibuya. The right-hander was the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year last year, and he will be starting for the Beloit Snappers as the 2012 season begins. Here are his thoughts as spring training comes to an end.

As the end of Spring Training nears, the positives and negatives that you only think about at the start of camp start to become a reality. Friends you have played with for a while might get moved to a higher level as they have earned a job and showed they can play at the next level. Others get bumped down by either poor play, a player being reassigned from big league camp, or a combination of the two.
