2016 Stohs Prospect Handbook Profile: He was small when he signed, and even now, he’s just 5-11 and (maybe) 160 pounds. Discussion of Vielma has to start with defense. To watch him for just a little bit at shortstop is all it takes to realize how special he is. So let’s get to it. He has very soft hands and is able to field the ball well. He has very good range to both his left and his right. He has good body control. He has a very strong arm and is able to make the throws from deep in the 5.5 hole (between short and third). He is also very smart and aligns himself on the field depending upon the hitter and pitcher. Just as important, he is a leader on the field. He takes over the infield and helps the outfielders. But he is a leader in the dugout, in the clubhouse and around the team. Offensively, he doesn’t like to walk, but he has a solid approach at the plate. He showed in the 2nd half of 2015 that he can hit for average. Unless he adds some strength and weight, he is going to be solely a singles hitter and any extra base hits will generally be due to hustle and his speed. He is a smart base runner who is able to read pitchers and steal bases. His defense is MLB-ready today.
