2016 Stohs Prospect Handbook Profile: When drafted, Stewart was touted for his big arm and a great athlete, but also for having several quality pitches. It was known that the Twins would need to be patient with him since baseball and pitching had never been a full-time thing for him. He had a fastball in the low-to-mid 90s, a quality changeup, a terrific slider that can be an out pitch, and a developing slow curve ball. In Cedar Rapids, he averaged just 6.4 strikeouts per nine innings, and that number dropped to 4.9 in Ft. Myers. That is something that does have fans and scouts concerned despite the fact that few hitters make hard contact against him. It’s certainly something to watch. In 2015, he was inconsistent with his fastball. There were times when he was sitting 94-96 mph, but other times he was at 91-92. He’s still working on mechanical things. His slider is still sharp. he has improved his curveball and still has a good changeup. To be fair, he is still learning how to pitch, and how to know what to do in situations. He’s still young and the talent and potential is just as high as it was when he was drafted, but patience will be important.
