2016 Stohs Prospect Handbook Profile: Buxton’s toolbox is as full as anyone in the game. Those tools are what made him the 2nd overall pick in the 2012 draft, behind only Carlos Correa. Buxton readily admits that his best tool is his speed. Buxton has the ability to turn routine groundouts into singles. Twins fans saw him bunt a ball directly back to the pitcher and beat it out. The speed shows up in first-to-third scenarios, but it also shows up in the outfield where he is able to track down baseballs that most centerfielders wouldn’t. Combined with a very strong throwing arm and range, his defense is already elite. Offensively, he is capable of great things, but fans will need to have some patience. But the potential is there for him to be a .300/.380/.450 type of hitter in time. Though he is unlikely to be a 30 homer season, he could develop into a 20 homer type of player. He is very patient at the plate. He has work to do and adjustments to make, but he can be a perennial All Star caliber player.
