2016 Stohs Prospect Handbook Profile: What are the things that are important for a starting pitcher on the field? A good fastball? Berrios tops out at 97, though he typically sits 92 to 95 with his fastball. A good breaking ball? Berrios has a curveball that breaks sharply. A good changeup? It’s possible that when he is on, his changeup is his best pitch. He uses the same arm motion and takes eight to 12 mph off of his fastball velocity. When it comes to ‘Stuff,’ Jose Orlando Berrios has it. Good control? Berrios has averaged just 2.5 walks per nine innings for his career though he was at just 2.1 in 2015 between AA and AAA. The ability to miss bats? Berrios has averaged 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings in his career including 9.9 K/9 in his 75.2 innings at AAA in 2015. When it comes to things like makeup and work ethic, Berrios has those in spades. His workout routine in Puerto Rico in the offseason is well documented. Berrios is driven not only to be a big league baseball player but to be a great Major League baseball player.
