Varitek, former Twins 1st Rounder, set to retire

The Twins took Jason Varitek with their first round pick in the 1993 MLB Draft (21st Pick) but he failed to sign with the team. The Red Sox went on to draft him the next year and he is forever etched in their club's history.

Any thoughts on Varitek as he is set to retire?

    about time
Speaking of, has Pudge declared retirement yet? The Twins should sign him to a Minor League contract and have him play with his kid in GCL league this season

Actually, I think they got Varitek and Derek Lowe via trade with Seattle, for Heathcliff Slocum I think.

You're right. I looked at his Baseball Reference page really quick. My bad...

Yup, Varitek big-timed the Mariners in about the same way he did with the Twins. Basically said he did not want to play for the Mariners. Basically forced a trade. And, yes, Heathcliff Slocumb for Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek was the deal, a deal that turned out pretty well for the Red Sox.

Varitek was a solid player for a long time on an east coast team and helped the Red Sox in their two WS championships. Very solid player. Probably immensely overrated by many, but he was just a solid player for an extended period of time.

Varitek is the only man in MLB history to catch four no-hitters!

Thrylos---I wish the Twins would sign Pudge to a minor league deal and then have him catch the thirty games that Drew will end up playing in this summer.
