Thread: First Round of Cuts

With Minor League Camp opening, the Twins plan to make their first round of cuts after the split squad game on Thursday. Typically the first round of cuts includes many on the 40 man that definitely won't make the 25-man to protect the team from wasting service time in case a player gets injured.

I believe the following players will be amongst those first cut:
Pitchers: Hermsen, Hernandez and Tonkin.
Catchers: Pinto
Infielders: Santana

I believe they'll keep Thielbar and Robertson around a little longer to compete for the LH Middle Relief role. And Swarzak, Roenicke and Wood are all out of options so they'll keep them around for a while yet.

They might keep Pinto around with Mauer and Butera at the WBC, but with Escobar and Clement being trained for emergency catch they might send him down and leave the primary duties to Doumit and Herrmann.

At this point Santana is the only infielder that is definitely not going to make the roster at this point.

If Arcia had been playing the first 2 weeks he might have been re-assigned as well, but since he has yet to see game action they might keep him around for another week to see him play.

Who do you think will be among the 1st cuts?

He definitely won't be in the first round of cuts since he is playing for Italy in the WBC.

I think the list you've got is right. They basically said that Arcia is being sent down. The others you've mentioned have at least an outside shot at a big league job, so I would think they'll stay.

Things get trickier because of the WBC that has 2 Cs and 2 1Bs and few others (sorry Perk) out.

What I think the first cuts would be:

Kyle Knudson
Danny Santana
Deibi Romero (academic)
Oswaldo Arcia (academic)

Shairon Martis
Bryan Augenstein

re: the catching assessment above: They really cannot cut many catchers without cutting pitchers. Lots of stuff going on the side so they have to have people catching bullpens etc.
