Miller: Mauer works on swing with Bruno

I wonder how this story is going to go over....

Phil Miller watched Mauer and Bruno go out for some extra swing practice on Wednesday. Afterwards, Bruno talked a little bit about why...

Mauer told Brunansky that his balance hadn't felt right during an at-bat on Tuesday, a small thing but one that the hitting coach is trained to fix. He brought a fungo bat out to the field -- longer and with a heavier barrel than a normal bat -- and had Mauer hit balls off the tee.

"The fungo makes him accountable. You've got to be able to use your legs to swing this, because if not, the bat head drops," Brunansky said. "You're not going to square stuff up."
The assumption among Mauer-haters is that he's uncoachable, or even unapproachable. So I'm sure some will view this as a member of the coaching staff grabbing some reins. When, in fact, it might be that Mauer worked with Vavra much the same way, and we just didn't have Miller there to report it, or Vavra didn't talk afterwards about it.

It's interesting to me that this is going to be such a great blank canvas for people to project thier paradigm upon. It'll be fascinated to see reactions.

He can't win with some fans...no matter what. That's just the way it is.

I guess of the criticisms of Mauer I've heard, uncoachable wasn't one that I've come across much; though I can see how his quiet Minnesota demeanor may unjustly provoke such thoughts.

Hopefully he puts some good time in with Steinbach as well. Parker had a great breakdown awhile back showing that Mauer was no longer getting out of his crouch quick enough on SB attempts which made it difficult to throw out runners. Hopefully these new voices can bring some new approaches to existing problems.

Yah, I had never heard uncoachable, and I Know he had a very good relationship with Vavra.

One of the best hitters of our generation (even greater is taking into account his position) and we are going to expect that Bruno is going to transform him? I'm not disparaging Bruno as a htting coach but let's get real = his job with Mauer is to hand him a water bottle.

You never know, there's always that one guy who starts a superhero down the path to immortality, why not Bruno for Joe? And I also have never heard that Mauer was uncoachable. Anyway, I would think that being a quiet Minnesotan would make it easier for you to be coached.

The top golfers have swing coaches, so I'm not surprised that BB players would use their team's coach. But the thread was a bit of a bait for trolls due to the premise that Mauer went to Brunansky.

Swings get off at times... All in a days work I imagine... I'm sure Mauer has sat down with Vavra many times and now Bruno and Joe will get to know each other.

With that said.. Dear Bruno... Don't screw it up... Joes swing is as good as I've ever seen.
