Pelfrey was thought pretty highly for a while as a prospect... This is another one that you could argue that the Mets rushed him too quickly instead of letting him develop on his own. He's also a prime candidate for picking up a tick or two on his velocity, as TJ tends to do that. I think that Baker would have been a better signing, but this is certainly better than Correia, so I won't complain there. Since he's stock piling question marks, I'd go hard after Bedard or Marcum at this point. I could see some of these guys getting flipped at the deadline if they turn out OK.

Hard to judge though since it's not a competitive team and typically putting a ton of money into FA's doesn't rebuild a team and instead just pushes off rebuilding for a few years. I just wish that he would quit pissing decent money down the drain on the bargain bin type FA's. 14M committed for a pair of back end starters could have went a fair ways towards landing a Jackson, Marcum, or Dempster. Perhaps I'll be shocked and they will also sign Jackson or Marcum but I doubt it. The Twins also could have traded a mid tier relief prospect and landed Haren for about 13M. Haren actually had the chance to be good.

Don't lump this one in with the Correia signing. A one year, make good deal with a potential mid-level starter is not all bad, especially if he wants to come here. I'll say it again: You are not going to have 4 #1 starters in your rotation, you need cheap, (hopefully) effective pitching as well. I have no problem with this. If it works, he may be here a while. If not, it only cost money (ie no prospects).

Me thinks rebuilding entails higher draft picks as well...

Right, that's my point too. It's not that signing Marcum is a great thing, but it's a better use of 15M than what we saw. It appears the Twins went into the offseason prizing depth over talent when they needed to do the opposite. Again though, that has been JR's track record as a GM. Many were expecting something from him that has not been part of his style at any point in his tenure. And contrary to popular belief, this isn't the first time they've had money available to spend.

Nothing wrong with signing Pelfrey to one year 4 million. It would look pretty great if it was paired with a Marcum or McCarthy signing instead of a Correia signing...

I don't dislike this signing in a bubble; however, after getting Correia and Worley this is likely the final touch to the rotation while we made our offense worse along with our OF defense worse. Additionally, we have yet to touch the IF.
Just means another disappointing season coming...gotta look forward...and pray a huge percentage of who we are counting on work out...

Yeah, I feel the same way. I don't think a Joe Saunders signing is coming along with this one, I think they're just grabbing as many cheap short-term arms as they can. But given that Pelfrey's TJ surgery was in May AND you're switching him from NL to AL (with a bad outfield defense), I'm a little afraid for what the results may be.
Look, at the end of the day, it's more important that they don't do anything to mess up 2014 and beyond than do anything that will dramatically improve us in 2013. But it is a weird dichotomy where they seem to have figured out what an "upside" arm looks like in the minor leaguers, yet their FA signings are still guys that have no real chance of catching on here long term.

How much will we be paying our rotation this year?

How would signing legit pitchers this year be bad for next year?

Next year, if both May and Meyer make a huge jump, we could see May, Meyer, Gibson, Worley and Diamond...and be paying less than 5M for our rotation.
WIllingham will likely be gone...as will Morneau...
So, Mauer's salary aside, all the other starters could very well have a salary less than a million..except Correia and Doumitt, if they aren't gone too.
I'm sure I'm missing someone...but the point is pretty clear I thinkLast edited by ThePuck; 12-16-2012 at 09:22 PM.

i'm trying to force myself to have some sort of optimism... but damn, we don't have one pitcher that we can rely on right now.
Diamond- pitched far above his abilities last season, expecting an ERA between 4 and 5
Worley- Coming from the NL, Hasn't pitched a full major league season yet with a history of injuries (Tommy John will be knocking on his door soon enough)
Pelfrey- Coming from the NL, coming off of Tommy John
Correia- Coming from the NL, *(refer to other Correia forums for an endless list of cons)
Gibson-Starting at Triple A, Coming off Surgery, innings restricted, not MLB ready
May/Meyer-Not MLB ready
Devries/Deduno-... Enough Said
Hendriks-Bad season last year, expecting much better, but still unproven
???? Come on Terry Ryan

It was only two years ago that Pelfrey outperformed James Shields by 4.2 WAR - Anyone else smell steal of the offseason?

Tommy John Surgery... Many guys around the league are thriving after TJ surgery, but it's still a gamble paying him 4 million eight months after his surgery, you can't expect anything out of him until he proves he's healthy... But yes I half way agree, POSSIBLY a steal with his past performances

I have zero clue why half you folks think $4-5 mil is expensive for a non-arb eligible starter. It's not. Look at the 2012 salaries. Mighty few starters pitching 150+ inn that make less.
Pelfrey is fine at that price, imo. Maybe they are sour on Bedard because he is always hurt and has had attitude trouble in the past. With the chances of us using many young players they might not want to subject them to someone like that.
I would also like to see Marcum added however, I think it is unlikely.

This is the fourth season I have been covering the Minnesota Twins' drafts. Since day one (you can see the humble 2009 beginnings here), I have been presenting potential target players' names and...
