#twins agree to terms with mike pelfrey. Expect him to be ready opening day. Still looking for yet another starter.
Does this mean we have another bargain bin pitcher in the works to be signed?
at that salary for a pitcher coming off a TJ surgery....why not just keep Scot Baker, who had the ability to strike guys out.
Because Baker hated bein here after bein called soft by Anderson/Ryan & misdiagnosed.
Shows how desparate this team is
Pelfrey before the injury was ok & Im fine with it I guess. Still a 95 to 100 loss team easily
Worse strikeout rate in 09-12 than Correia (5th lowest with 600IP).
If he regains his old velocity (92mph ave)....he becomes our hardest thrower immediately!!!
Worley, Diamond, Pelfrey, Correria, other. This is a much better Rotation than last years, yet still probably a bottom five in the Majors rotation. Kind of puts into perspective how bad things were last year. I disagree with greengoblinrulz that this is a 95 loss team. I think it is closer to a .500 team right now. There is still alot of money available and if TR can woo a Marcum or Jackson type, this is a pretty descent ballclub. Gibson could start in AAA or bullpen and take over for Pelfrey or Correria later in the year, which would bulster our bullpen. I like what TR is doing. He is not overspending on guys and vastly improved the team. I still see another addition to MI and a SP. Not great but butter than average.
now this is a better signing. If only Correia was a 1 year deal.
I'm still baffled when comparing the contracts of Correia, Pelfrey, and Lannan.. it just doesn't... make...sense!
Ryan has stated that Gibson will start in AAA to monitor his innings but will start as they dont want him adusting to relieving.
He is obviously gonna take over (mid-year) for Diamond (if he regresses), Hendriks (easy #5 starter who I predict will have a Diamond like breakout yr but ya never know), Corriea (when his June era of 5.50 shows how bad a signing it was), or Pelfrey (either if his arm isnt sound or inevitably dealt at deadline....#1 reason he was signed)
This is fine, prefer the 1 year deal. But Baker at 5.5M > Pelfry at 4M. Just my opinion.
we lost Span and Revere (making our offense and OF defense worse), got Worley, Pelfrey and Correia...and all of a sudden we're close to a .500 team?
Ah, the offseason optimism...
Again, Im fine with Pelfrey but keeping Scot Baker woulda been a major improvement.
Diamond, most people agree, is a #4 or #5 type on a good team. That's why he's our opening day starter.
Worley...love the deal--get that out of the way....but was a #4 or #5 on a good Phillies team last 2 yrs.
Correia was a #5 or #6 type on a Pirates team that was .500 each of last 2 Augusts, but then faded hard (lots due to Corriea)
Pelfrey.....gonna be a project this year due to TJ....wont be the 200IP guy he was 2 of last 3 yrs.
Hendriks....Im a big fan but he has a TON to prove & will have to beat out Nick Blackburn in spring training for job.
Is this it for starters???
YUCK!!! It is what it is tho. This is a last place teams rotation BUT 2013 is all about getting our prospects ready for 2014.
Gibson will be in rotation in the 2nd half or possibly Aug 1st to keep him to the projected 140 innings (cmon get him to 160)
Trevor May is on the 40 man roster & if he starts well, could be brought up fast .....big IF tho, but will up in 2nd half sometime.
Still think Alex Meyer will make a 2nd half appearance (again if he starts off well in New Brit)
Ryan doing what he does best...slashing payroll while trying to build for the future.
Awesome. So JR has used all that money available to him this offseason to pick up an awful old pitcher for two years and an awful young pitcher for one year.
Yee hah. Makes me want to go snatch up an entire section of season tickets. Just ****ing awful. Trade Willingham already and stop screwing around. If you're completely unwilling to pay market price for players that don't suck, start rebuilding properly. At least that gives us something to get excited about in 2013.
I don't really get the point to signing both Correia and Pelfrey. The Twins needed to go after a #2/3 starter to go with Worley this offseason and instead they signed 2 #4/5 guys (upside) and pissed a little money down the drain. It's pretty clear that JR is doing whatever it takes to avoid tying up future payroll and build internally. It's a good long term plan but the Twins aren't that poor and unless something crazy happens they aren't going to come close to a 90-100M payroll in 2014/2015. And even that payroll is below their means but I understand (and support) that they are rebuilding.
So far this offseason's FA's are reminding me of '07/'08 offseason where they had extra money (after the Johan and Torii departures) but shopped in the bargain bin spending 15-20M on guys like Lamb, Everett, Monroe, and Livan. These guys were awful and aside from Lamb they were expected to be awful but they avoided tying up money long term.
Perhaps JR will surprise me but I now think these are the 3 pitchers that we were going to add this offseason.
