He's been caught looking a bit more than the past four years.
2008-2011: 18%
2012: 26%
May just need his strike zone re-calibrated.
That shows a year-over-year rise, but not necessarily a linear one.
It could be that Mauer's strikeout rate was unusually high early this year because he was rusty from missing so much time last year. I'm too lazy to look it up. Does anyone know?
is this dumb......not catching as much might hurt him on the called strikes as he's not 'working' the home plate umpire as much as before.
I'm not saying either way if it is or is not having any effect on him because it is likely just a statistical blip and now an issue however Pete Rose was notorious for taking batting practice and just watching each pitch go by so he could visualize a strike zone. Perhaps not catching as much has taken a little bit of that element away for Mauer.Quote:

I don't have the numbers in front of me but it seems like his K rate went up when the gidp rate went down.
