Thread: Sid Hartman: Gardenhire Won't Quit Until He Wins World Series

Sid interviewed manager Ron Gardenhire about the tough year but Gardenhire made it clear he doesn't plan on leaving.

"I love what I'm doing. I like running the ballclub, I like the Minnesota Twins organization," Gardenhire said. "Until [Twins General Manager] Terry [Ryan] tells me he's going to do something else, I'll just keep on chugging along. My goal is to win a World Series here, and I don't want to quit until I do that. That's not up to me. That's something to be addressed at the end of the season."

I thought the community might like to react to that story here as opposed to the Strib's comment section.

I thought that might be something we try since sometimes some of those sites have very few comments or have comment sections that might not be particularly rewarding.)

Seeing as how deflated Gardy looks after some of the more terrible loses, I kind of got the feeling that he may actually hang it up if presented the opportunity by Terry Ryan. I guess if a coaching change is ever in the books, Gardy isn't going to make it easy on the GM.

Gardy gets paid very well to pace, sigh, shrug, eat sunnies and look dejected. Why would he give up that pay check?

Well my first thought is that the title of your post and this quote do not sync 100%. Saying "I'm not going to quit until I win a world series" and what Gardenhire actually said in that quote are very different.

To me, what he is saying in that quote is just keeping things positive. Of course he wants to win a World Series here, and that should be the ultimate goal. To continue to use his wording the much more likely outcome is that he will keep chugging along. TK was Manager for 15 years I think... Gardy has another 5 to get to that number, if that means anything.

The next 2 years will be interesting, as Morneau's contract comes up in particular to see if the Twins can acquire some talent with their 100mil-ish cap and become competitive again during the Mauer contract era (through 2018).

Before the team fell apart and all the issues since a big problem this ball club had was being truly competitive outside of the central division. 6 division wins, but no real success beyond that level. Now they are trying to get back to the level they had previously... I just don't see it happening anytime soon. But time will tell!

Yes, that was well-phrased by John. Personally, I would have said "most comments section are herp derp cork-on-the-fork stupid".

Honestly, I don't think Gardenhire has enough years left for him to win a World Series in Minnesota. I'm not sure he has enough years left to win a playoff game in Minnesota. (Part of this is a comment on his age & health; part on his playoff record and part on the abysmal condition this team is in).

My preference is for him to announce his resignation in the next few weeks -- effective at the end of the sesason. As I mentioned in Chief's thread, having a "lame duck" manager doesn't matter if you are really mediocre anyway; it would allow him to have a farewell tour of all the cities in the Central; and would accord him a reasonable amount of respect and dignity. It also allows the Twins to conduct a manager "search" without stepping on his toes; might allow them to get a new manager in place by the end of the season or shortly thereafter; and might help stabilize season ticket sales.

JB not sure you can call the last place Twins mediocre.

How about a season where your team doesn't totally lose interest after the break? This is 3 years in a row which is inexcusable.

I didn't realize Sid was still alive and kicking so I wonder if this wasn't a misquote. Sid probably thought he was talking to his old friend Casey Stengel.

3 years in a row? They won 94 games in 2010...not sure how they totally lost interest after the break.

Exactly right. Twins have just lack motivation after the break. You think some of these guys would try to play their tails off to show they belong on the team next year, but they know Gardy is a pushover, and no matter who you are Gardy will always give you 6-7 chance to prove your worth (Casilla). There definitely needs to be a culture change around the clubhouse.

I included their last three 2nd half records in the "Time for a change" thread when the same garbage was spouted there. I will say it amuses me when someone makes something up out of thin air that is completely contrary to fact and it gets an enthusiastic agreement from someone else. That's good times.
