What would your "core" be?
Somebody brought up in the trade rumors thread the idea of the Twins having a "core" group of untouchables to build upon, and be willing to move everybody else for the right price.
So what would your core be? For the sake of discussion, let's limit it to 5 players who are currently under contract with the Twins and could be ready to play in the Majors no later than next spring.
Mine would be:
Mauer
Diamond
Willingham
Revere
Dozier

I don't think anyone on this roster should be untouchable. This team is going to be bad for at least two more years. If someone is willing to pay for a player, you take it. No one outside of Dozier, Revere, Diamond, and maybe Plouffe are under team control for 4+ years and have futures with the club and I'd trade any of them if the deal was right. They're not exactly blue-chippers.
Obviously, Mauer isn't going anywhere but he hardly makes up a "core".

Mauer would be a core player if his contract was $12-15 million not $23 million. There should be no such thing as an untouchable player on any team no matter the team. If someone wants to blow you away with a deal you should pull the trigger. I know you cannot trade everyone but I am puzzled with the article about the Twins searching for pitching.

Mauer is the only untouchable close to or in the MLB.... and that is because of his contract as well as status, MN born, etc.... There are no other premiere players on the roster in cheap long term deals and guys like Benson and Hicks could be trade chips if the team kept Span/Revere.

Trevor Plouffe
Sam Malone

Carla Tortelli
Cliff Clavin

I keep wrestling with the question as stated, and just can't come up with an answer. I have some assumptions about what you could get in trade for Plouffe or Diamond or Revere, namely that it would not justify giving up a young player who is starting to look like a bona fide major leaguer at a very favorable contract status. I also have assumptions about the big-salary guys Mauer and Morneau, that likewise would make trading them unlikely. I don't think I have a core of players I would not trade.

Below is my list of players that I would not trade in an effort to acquire Pitching.
That concludes my list!!!

(Whispering) Keep Ernie's status on the down low - I'm trying to build up his value.

Mauer can't be traded. Everyone else can be. That said, my five core guys would be Mauer, Gibson, Hendriks, Revere (cheaper Span) and ... screw it, Morneau. Keep him. I don't want him traded.
