Thread: Terry Doyle

So now we are almost two months into the season and the starting rotation has proved worse than possibly thought, I wonder if the Twins are having second thoughts about sending Terry Doyle back to Chicago.

Granted, he hasn't cracked the majors there yet, but his AAA numbers are decent, even good:
3.46 ERA, 1 CG, 1.098 WHIP, 8.7 SO/9, 2.1 BB/9, 4.08 SO/BB

If we're giving starts to DeVries and Walter, you have to think Doyle couldn't do any worse.

Yeah, but his ST went poorly so he lost he chance here. Too bad but can't really blame the Twins on that. On the other hand, the Diamond for Bullock thing is looking better.

Maybe. He was having a bad spring. And they sent him back before they knew about Baker's TJ surgery. I don't know that Doyle could do better than DeVries or Walters. He wasn't worth trying to work out a trade for him to keep him at AAA and he wasn't good enough to keep him on the 25 man roster, so I don't think that the Twins are too concerned about him.

I agree that, at the time, it was the right decision. This just might be a case where the right decision ends up not helping you. I don't know what kind of upside he had - probably no more than a 5th starter or long reliever. Still, of all the years to "waste" a roster spot on a rule 5, this might have been the one. That's what they're doing with Komatsu right now. What's that they say about hindsight?

I think that it was crazy to find more value to make determinations on Doyle based on 3-4 appearances this spring than the 200 IP he threw last year. I really think that DeVries, Walters and Doyle are all about the same. I do think Diamond can become a pretty decent mid-rotation guy.

I agree, especially with the fault of such a small evaluation period. The one thing I did notice is that Doyle has a higher K/9 ratio than. He others mentioned here, but in the end they all do look similar.

I really hated that trade when it went down, but it is sitting a lot better with me at present time. Diamond actually looks like he might be able to stick in the Bigs whether it be as a SP or RP.

His K/9 rate is 2 points higher than it was in A/AA last year. That rate won't last. He probably could have been given a shot, as mentioned before he'd probably be comparable to the other young arms, but he also wouldn't have had the prep time to get ready the rest of the Twins AAA arms have had this year as he would have spent his first 1-2 months trying to figure out how to work in the bullpen. How would the Twins have re-stretch him out? They wouldn't have been able to send him to Rochester to do it.

Exactly. Doyle impressed them enough last year and in the AFL . . . so a few appearances in ST ruins that? That's insane and a pathetic way to evaluate talent. And it is just so self-contradictory. I guess the decision was between two of Doyle, Swarzak, and Maloney? Haha. Wow.

I didn't mind the trade that much . . . except they called him up anyway!

In hindsite, not expecting Marquis to come north and Hendriks opening the season injured, they might have pulled the plug a couple of days later rather than sooner. The evils od dealing with siomeone from a rival or within the division...it's a no-brainer for the other team NOT to trade him if they still think he is the 41-50th player currently in their organization depth chart and they don't need to roster him.
