Thread: Morosi: Twins to Designate Jason Marquis for Assignment

The following was a tweet from Jon Morosi in the last five minutes:

Let the speculation begin:

I'd project that Cole DeVries will take Marquis's 40 man roster spot and his spot in the starting rotation.
Could be Liam Hendriks as well.
Could be Anthony Swarzak to start with Anthony Slama taking Marquis's 40 man spot and a bullpen spot.

I think they move Duensing to start, call up Slama.

Duensing hasn't even begun to stretch out into starting capacity and it would be asinine to convert him back to a starter.

I don't like Swarzak much, but I would take that route if it meant Slama would be FINALLY promoted.

Good move. With how he is pitching now, I can't see another team claiming him. There is the random chance that he could figure his stuff out in Rochester, and he'd still be in the system if he's needed. And, open up another spot on the 40 man. I like it.

I like getting Slama up and Swarzak to start. Second preference is to recall Hendricks and leave Swarzak in the pen. Leave Duensing alone.

I think Slama deserves his chance but I don't think I'm as optimistic as you. Turpen in AA has really been intriguing. Interesting to see if they move him up to AAA if Slama comes up.

This isn't hard to figure out. Liriano goes back in the rotation, Slama takes his place in the pen and on the 25 man roster.

Butera to Closer, Liriano to the rotation, Morneau to emergency third catcher, Doumit to starting catcher, Mauer to third, Capps to Golden Coral, Nishioka to Ft Myers, Joe Benson to a batting cage.

I think that for the short and long term this makes the most sense:

- They need to get Liriano going so they can get some value for him
- Would be great for Hendriks and Guerra to get some success in AAA before they join the team in September and in 2013
- Slama is way overdue to be in the bigs

Cole DeVries is a good story and he will probably be up soon also replacing the next SP who needs replacing (Blackburn? Walters?)

Guerra is out of options starting next year, if he continues to succeed in AAA you need to consider bringing him up soon, I'd be pretty surprised if he isn't on the team by the all star break, Sept is to long to wait IMO. I think Hendriks will be back up by then as well, not nesicarly due to him earning it, more just the rotation continuing to be terrible overall.

If Liriano's back to starting, who pitches the other 7 innings of his starts? I understand wanting Liriano to break out but he's done nothing the last two years to suggest he should be starting.

Unlike other options, he has, at least, shown above average ability at certain points of his career.

What other option can you say that about? Duensing maybe, but that seemed pretty illusory at the time, as proven later. Plus, he looks like he can be a real asset in the pen. Leave him there.

Do you really think he'd accept going to Rochester? He can turn it down, as a 5-year veteran, can't he? If he is indeed better in the NL, and is "condemned" to AAA again, why not try to sign a minor league contract with a NL team? Better chance to get back up that way.

I'd be pretty surprised if an NL team wouldn't pick him up within a week.

That can't be right.

The only reason he accepted the earlier start in AAA or was it AA? Was that the Twins guaranteed him to be back on the major league team by X date.

I'm not positive, and I've been trying to find a copy of the 2012 basic contract on line with no luck, but I think it works like this: if he goes through waivers unclaimed, the Twins can attempt to reassign his contract to Rochester. He has the right to refuse, and become a FA, but in doing so, forfeits the remainder of this contract.

At least that's the way I read the basic contract in effect 2007-2011 (Article XIX, A. 2). A player with more than five years can refuse assignment to the minors, but in doing so becomes a FA and "is not entitled to termination pay." "Termination pay" is defined elsewhere as the remainer of the contract for that season (article IX). You can find the 2007-2011 basic contract with a google search for "MLB basic contract."
