Apparently I managed to start my original thread in the wrong forum, so I'm going to start a new one.

The old on is at this link if you really want to see the updates; all future updates will be on this new thread. http://twinsdaily.co...nys-vargas.html

Original intro:

Kennys Vargas (adopt-a-prospect)

Born: Aug. 1, 1990, Canovanas, Puerto Rico
High School: Luis Hernaiz Veronne HS, Canovanas, P.R.
Ht.: 6-5 Wt.: 215 (allegedly)
Bats: B Throws: R
Acquired: Undrafted Free Agent

First of all, Kennys Vargas is a big dude. In this photo, the “little guy” on the right is Miguel Sano, and there aren’t too many people who can make Sano look small. I’m not sure where the listed weight of 215 came from, but I’m not buying it. (Maybe it was his birth weight.)

Posted Image

Vargas’ status as a prospect is solely due to his ability to hit for power. Entering his age 22 season, he has yet to play more than 44 games in a year, so it’s difficult to gauge exactly what he will be. His defense is suspect at first and he has served a 50 game suspension for violating the substance abuse policy (for taking an unapproved weight loss supplement.)

But in the limited time we have seen him, he has put up some pretty impressive numbers. Time isn’t on his side and 2013 will likely be a sink-or-swim year for him. He will need to show that he can put up the big numbers over a full season and can’t afford many more missteps if he is to remain a prospect.

Prospect rankings:
Seth Stohs: #12
BA: #29
Gleeman: #30
TwinkieTown: Not ranked

Vargas continues to move his numbers in the right direction. He has now played more games this season than in any previous season.

I don't know why but this guy and Walker are my two favorite prospects in our system! Any chance he makes it up to the bigs and makes an impact? If so whats his ETA?

I'd say it's still too early to tell. If he gets a mid-season promotion to AA (I think that's a good possibility) and continues to hit, that would start to tip the scales in his favor. He might wear down as the season progresses because this will be his first full season, if he stays healthy and completes the season.

A lot of people have compared him to David Ortiz, and to make an impact he might have to hit like Oritiz because he isn't likely to buy a lot of leeway with his glove. Ortiz at age 22 spent most of the year with the Twins and had an OPS over 800. At age 23 he was sent to AAA and tore up the PCL (315/.412/.590/1.002) before making back to the majors to stay.

Vargas is a bit behind the timeline, but has a chance to catch up. He might have a window of opprtunity if Morneau leaves and the Twins don't fill the vacancy very well If he finishes the year in AA and he continues to hit, he could realistically split next year between AA and AAA with a September call-up and a vacant position to compete for.

I think he gets there, maybe not at the Ortiz level, but I think he will be a useful MLB regular.

Most underrated player in the system??
Currently
tied w/Sano for 2nd in FSL w/41 RBI to Dustin Geiger's 43
Tied 2nd w/10HR (Sano w/13)
2nd in FSL in slugg w/.541 (only 8 total above .500 in notorious pitchers lg...Rosario.503/Sano .647)
4th in OPS w/.903 (Sano 1.094)
26 gms in May .318/.418/.648 in 88ABs

He needs to be promoted pronto to AA and there is NO REASON not to do so. Let him see AA pitching for the rest of the season. If this were Shane's org. AA and AAA would be loaded as hell by this time next year.

Vargas keeps on hitting. Only one walk in the past 10 games, but if pitchers are going to throw strikes he's doing what he needs to do. I agree with Shane - time to send him to New Britain and see what he can do.

Yes Vargas was spectacular in May, but his OPS was just .741 in April when he had 3.5 times as many strikeouts as walks. He played just 41 games last year in Beloit because of his suspension. Give him at least another month or two in Cedar Rapids before promoting him. It won't slow his development much and it reduces the risk of him really struggling upon reaching AA, which could slow his development a lot more than the extra month or two he spends in Cedar Rapids.

Vargas saw a couple of his teammates receive tickets to New Britain, but he was left behind. The two following games didn't do anything to make the case that it was a mistake - a pair of 0-3 games with 5 Ks. Overall the past 10 days haven't been too bad - he is still hitting:

Vargas has demonstrated he can hit A+ pitching, so it appears he's just waiting for the promotion now. If these decisions happened in a vacuum, without impacting other players and roster spots, I would guess he would be promoted now. As it is, there is as close to a vacuum as you can get at AA (a 27-yr-old with nice power numbers, but still in AA at 27, and a 26-yr-old non-prospect), and at low-A there is a 1B who is waiting for Vargas to get out of the way so he can move up (http://twinsdaily.co...lton-hicks.html). I'd be surprised if the promotion doesn't come within two weeks.

Looks like he is ready for the next step. Depends on what is at AA to stop him from moving up. The wave is coming!

Rodriguez has put up some decent power numbers, but at age 27 his upside is a poor man's Chris Colabello. Smith is less than that. Neither should get in the way of an actual prospect.
