Losers of two of three games in Kansas City, the Minnesota Twins head to Washington to face the surprisingly underwhelming Nationals. The Nationals pitching has come through for the team, allowing 235 runs over their first 59 games. Their offense has been a letdown, scoring only 201 runs in the 2013 season. Bryce Harper is the sole standout in the Nationals offense, posting a .973 OPS and continuing to prove that he's one of the league's brightest young stars.

Thankfully, the Twins are throwing three of their (somewhat reliable) starters against

Since 2010 the Minnesota Twins starting rotation has had an average fastball velocity of 90 miles per hour, which has been the lowest in the American League. In that time, they have struck out the lowest percentage of hitters (14.8%), had the third-highest ERA (4.76) and second-highest contact rate (83.6%).

In an effort to improve in these areas the Twins selected Kohl Stewart, a fireballer out of a Houston prep school whose skill set is projected to eventually help the rotation out of the lowly doldrums.

Armed with a mid-90s fastball that touches 97, Stewart, a Texas A&M recruited quarterback, has mowed down Texas hitters for several years ...

Following the Twins selection of RHP Kohl Stewart, he called in and talked with the media for a while. It was interesting to hear him talk about the draft. For so long, we have heard that he had this strong commitment to Texas A&M where he had a full scholarship to play both football and baseball. Listening to his responses tells me there is no question that, not only will he sign, but he could sign quickly.

How did Stewart find out he was drafted? His parents had 75-100 friends and family at their home, a big rain storm came down and temporarily knocked out their satellite. He had to scramble and found that he had been drafted by the Twins on his cell phone. ...

The Minnesota Twins went heavy on pitchers and catchers on Day 2 of the 2013 MLB Draft. In fact, through 10 rounds, the Twins have added only one player to their ranks who was not a pitcher or a catcher.

Of the eight picks on Day 2, three of them were catchers, two from college and one from the high school ranks. In addition, they chose four pitchers to add to the two they selected on Day 1. They also followed last year's trend of targeting college relievers in the middle rounds. Here are their profiles:

The Twins draft two arms - well, technically, they got four arms - but they got two pitchers out of the first night of the draft. Jeremy, Seth and John talk about the selection of Kohl Stewart, how that came down, whether he was really the BPA (best player available), his first press conference with the Twins and how soon fans could see him in Target Field.

Then they move to the second round selection of Ryan Eades and ... well, who is Ryan Eades. They finish by mentioning a couple of other Minnesotans who were drafted in the first two rounds.

Well the big news of the day, of course, was the Twins selecting pitcher Kohl Stewart with the 4th overall pick in the amateur draft. Not surprisingly, all the MiLB experts at TwinsDaily are providing great draft coverage, so I'm pinch-hitting and piecing together the daily minor league report. Here's hoping that, in the coming couple years, we see Stewart's name popping up very often in this nightly report!

It's fun to think about a rotation in, say, 2015 or 2016 that could feature Alex Meyer, Trevor May, Stewart, Kyle Gibson, and even Alex Wimmers. From where this organization was just a year ago (prospect-wise), it's tough not to be at least a little optimistic. Now to tonight's action: ...

With the fourth overall pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft… the Minnesota Twins select right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart.

With the first pick, the Houston Astros picked Stanford RHP Mark Appel. With the second pick, the Chicago Cubs, in a little surprise, went with 3B Kris Bryant. At Number 3, the Colorado Rockies selected RHP Jonathan Gray. There were so many rumors flying around the past few days, but after three picks, The Big Three were gone.

That left the Minnesota Twins with RHP from Texas Kohl Stewart. ...

We are only a couple days away from getting an influx of talent into the Twins' minor league system. The MLB First Year Player Draft will start on Thursday night and the Twins have the fourth overall selection. It will be the second year in a row that the Twins are picking in the top five.

Last year's first round selection, Byron Buxton, has been a great addition to the organization. By the end of this year, he could be the top ranked prospect in all of baseball. Last week, Seth Stohs moved him ahead of Miguel Sano as the Twins number one prospect. ...

After weeks of writing about the MLB Draft, today is the day. Sometime shortly after 6:00 central time, the Houston Astros will make the first pick of the draft. The Twins will pick soon after. By night’s end, 73 picks will have been made. The Minnesota Twins will make two selections. By the end of Saturday, the Twins will have made 40. Over 1,200 players will have been drafted.

That will be a lot of draft day stories, and that’s what this article is about. Below, you will find the draft day stories, in their words, of several players at various levels of the Twins' farm system. I asked two questions. What was their draft day like, and when they found they had been drafted by the Twins, what was their reaction? ...

Here it is: everything you need to look like you’ve been eating and breathing MLB Draft (which starts at 6:00 tonight) for the last month, all in one quick story.

    The Bad News
The Twins are drafting fourth in what is widely considered to be a draft with three great players. If those three go to the first three teams, the Twins will likely go one of two ways: ...

It's been a fast 40 percent of the New Britain season. The team has played all right -- about what I expected, given the difficulty of replacing guys like Aaron Hicks, Chris Herrmann, Oswaldo Arcia and Chris Colabello, who were the mainstays of the 2012 team, and who have all gone on to varying degrees of success in 2013. One of the most exciting things about following the Rock Cats is realizing how quick the path from central Connecticut to Minneapolis can be.

With all the recent developments in the latest PED scandal, it remains to be seen which players (if any) will receive suspensions and how those penalties may or may not impact the Minnesota Twins.

While MLB is busy trying to procure documents, names and testimonies from now-defunct Biogenesis and its shady former owner Tony Bosch, countless athletes such as Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez are once again finding their names in the headlines for suspicion of using performance-enhancing drugs. ...

In the past couple days, as we are leading up to an exciting draft for the Minnesota Twins, we are also looking back at the top performers in the Twins' farm system for May. In the past two days, we have named Cole Johnson the Reliever of the Month and DJ Baxendale the repeat-winner of the Starting Pitcher of the Month. Today, we swing our attention (see what I did there?) to the bats.

Although there wasn’t a battle for the top spot as there was in April, there were still plenty of strong performances. The runner-up for this month, a member of the Ft. Myers Miracle, would win most months. I gave strong consideration to him, but the guy at the top put up some incredible numbers… and didn’t even spend the whole month as a minor leaguer. ...
