Turner was drafted out of Ole Miss with the 78th overall selection in the 2013 draft. Baseball America ranked him #110 in their pre-draft 500.

Turner signed quickly for a below-slot $550k.

As is the Twins typical style, they drafted a catcher in Turner who earns rave reviews for what he can do defensively. Everything you want in a defensive catcher, Turner offers including an arm that threw out nearly half would-be basestealers with a pop time under 1.9 seconds.

Despite finishing with a batting average of .389 that placed him third in college baseball's most competitive conference, questions remain about Turner's swing. The Twins believed enough in his hit-tool to make him a 3rd round pick.

The likelihood is that Turner will begin his season with the E-town Twins, but Turner has what it takes to be the first position player from the 2013 to make the jump to full-season ball, potentially helping Cedar Rapids in their question for a Midwest League Title.

.313/.365/.402 (.767), 13 doubles, 0 triples, 1 homer, 16 walks, 15 strikeouts, 11 steals and 7 times caught stealing.

2013 FSL numbers:
95 plate appearances, .378/.447/.427, 4/0/0, 11/8, 9/3M

Mejia is an interesting story. He had an unspectacular first two seasons in the DSL and GCL, but in 2012 found some success at age 20 in the GCL. After that season ended, he just happened to still be in town when Fort Myers needed him.

Now this year, instead of starting him in Cedar Rapids, he spent time in EST and then went back to play for Fort Myers when they needed him. And he has put up fantastic numbers so far while playing 9 games at 2B, 7 in LF, 4 at SS, 1 at 3B, and 1 in RF (committing just one error at SS). The .874 OPS is impressive for someone who is essentially just moving from the GCL. He is 21, so there is no need to get totally carried away, but he is impressing and is serving as an offensively strong super utility guy at the moment.

First of all, Kennys Vargas is a big dude. In this photo, the “little guy” on the right is Miguel Sano, and there aren’t too many people who can make Sano look small. I’m not sure where the listed weight of 215 came from, but I’m not buying it. (Maybe it was his birth weight.)



Vargas’ status as a prospect is solely due to his ability to hit for power. Entering his age 22 season, he has yet to play more than 44 games in a year, so it’s difficult to gauge exactly what he will be. His defense is suspect at first and he has served a 50 game suspension for violating the substance abuse policy (for taking an unapproved weight loss supplement.)

But in the limited time we have seen him, he has put up some pretty impressive numbers. Time isn’t on his side and 2013 will likely be a sink-or-swim year for him. He will need to show that he can put up the big numbers over a full season and can’t afford many more missteps if he is to remain a prospect.
