Figuring hitters out, a baseball lifer told me recently, is like trying to untangle a giant knot.

At first you just try to attack it in the easiest manner possible. If that does not work, you pick another course. And then another and another. You keep trying different things until something gives and you attack that spot until the knot becomes an unraveled mess of string with a sub-.200 batting average and a ticket back to Triple-A.

That, in short, is how teams approach players who are new to the league. ...

I’ve been following the Twins minor league system pretty much daily for the past eight years. I can honestly say that I have not seen a pitcher have an opening stretch like DJ Baxendale has had this season. His May numbers (see below) have been incredible. But there were other great performances including a 22-year-old southpaw throwing eight innings in New Britain. And Ft. Myers continues to get offense from unlikely sources.

Check out what happened in the Twins minor league system on Thursday: ...

    Who IS This Guy?

Clint Frazier is a high school center fielder from Georgia. He is widely considered to have the best bat speed in the entire draft, which enables him to have very good raw power. His 5-foot-11 frame has a muscular build at 190 pounds. This makes it tough to project him adding more weight but he looks like an MLB player. He also plays with a ton of energy and is recognized for his intensity.

On the defensive side of the ball, there are some questions about whether he can stick in center field. ...

Jim Mandalaro of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle tweeted today that PJ Walters told Mandalaro that Walters will be promoted to the Minnesota Twins and start a game this weekend. This solves the mystery of who will be taking Vance Worley's spot in the starting rotation and puts to rest speculation that prospect Kyle Gibson will be making his major league debut in the immediate future. How the Twins will juggle their 25-man and 40-man roster to make space for Walters is still unknown.

Walters joined the Twins prior to the 2012 ...

It is now late May, and the Twins season is at a crossroads. The team has lost eight straight games as it embarks on a four-game series in Detroit against the Tigers. The season is in flux, and right now the roster, specifically the starting rotation, is in flux.

Before tonight's game, the Twins will add Samuel Deduno to their 40 man roster and then their 25 man roster. Most likely, Tim Wood will be put on the 60 day disabled list. Following another poor performance on Thursday, the Twins optioned RHP Vance Worley to AAA Rochester. That leaves an open spot on the 25-man roster and the need for a 5th starter on Monday. So, who will it be? ...

    Who IS This Guy?

Ryne Stanek (6’ 4, 190) is a right-handed pitcher for the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Mariners selected him in the 3rd round of the 2010 draft, but Stanek elected to head to SEC to face the best hitters in college baseball. After enrolling in Arkansas, there was some hope that he would be eligible for the 2012 draft, but he narrowly missed the cutoff. (Players must turn 21 within 45 days of the draft.) Stanek entered this season, his junior season, in a three-horse race to be the first overall selection in the 2013 draft. He’s closing out his season with lower expectations, but still is a dark-horse candidate to be the third collegiate pitcher selected.

Immediately following today's 8-3 loss to the Braves, the Twins demoted Opening Day starting pitcher, Vance Worley, to AAA-Rochester. Worley had given up eight runs in 3.2 innings in today's game, raising his ERA to 7.21 on the year. The Twins did not announce a corresponding move, though they have announced that Samuel Deduno will pitch on Friday and has not been called up. However, he will be taking Hernandez' - not Worley's - spot in the rotation.

Worley joined the Twins this offseason when he was acquired ...

The Twins losing streak went to seven games with a tough loss in Atlanta. They’ll have to get over it quickly for a noon game (Eastern) on Wednesday. Twins Daily has learned that Chris Colabello will be attempting to join the Twins in time for the game.

Virgil Vasquez made a spot start in place of the promoted Sam Deduno. Trevor May had one of the craziest line scores you’ll see. One Twins minor leaguer hit a homer for the third straight game on Tuesday, and it isn’t the same guy who homered twice on the day. Cedar Rapids had a well-deserved day off. ...

Though we do not know the follow up transactions (DL and 40 man implications), Twins Daily has learned from multiple sources that Chris Colabello has been promoted to the Minnesota Twins. He'll have a very early morning flight and hope to join the Twins for Wednesday's noon game in Atlanta.

It is possible that Colabello will take the 25-man roster spot of Trevor Plouffe, who was kneed in the back of the head on a slide at second base. He left the game and was clearly woozy. Likely Eduardo Escobar and Jamey Carroll will get time at third base. (We will update as we learn more.) ...

    Who IS This Guy?

At six-foot-six and just 175 pounds, 18-year-old Trey Ball from New Castle High School in Indiana has an extremely projectable frame, one that experts agree will fill out nicely as he matures. Opinion, however, appears split between where he should play: pitcher or outfielder.

    Who Could He Be?

The majors have few left-handed power arms whose fastballs average in the mid-90's. Tampa’s David Price, Texas’ Derek Holland and Los Angeles’ Clayton Kershaw are members of a rare breed who can dial up that kind of velocity from the port-side. Because of that, Ball’s immediate future may be as a pitcher. In 2012, during ...

Even before his three-hit shutout on Sunday, I felt that the time had come to promote Kyle Gibson to the major leagues. The Twins seemingly positioned themselves to do so Monday when they announced the removal of Pedro Hernandez from the rotation, opening up Friday's start. But on Tuesday the club ended any such speculation by informing us that Samuel Deduno will be the one to get the nod.

Even as a confirmed Gibsonite, I can't feign to be overly upset with this move. Because more than I wanted to see the top prospect get a chance, I wanted to simply see the Twins make some sort of change to their stagnating formula. Deduno qualifies in a major way; a step in the exact opposite direction.

The Minnesota Twins PR director, Dustin Morse, tweeted out on Tuesday that manager Ron Gardenhire said that the team will go with Samuel Deduno on Friday in Detroit rather than the prospect Kyle Gibson, who was coming off a complete game shutout in his most recent start.

Deduno spent time with the Twins last year, displaying an odd combination of a low hit rate and a lack of control. This resulted in some dominating outings but also several short ones. In 15 starts he pitched 79 innings, or less than 5.1 IP per start. Overall he posted a ...

Today, we continue our look at players that the Minnesota Twins could consider drafting with the #4 overall pick in next month's MLB Draft. Today we check out an uber-talented prep player from a baseball hotbed!

    Who Is This Guy?

It can be argued that outfielder Austin Meadows is the top-rated high school position player in the 2013 MLB draft. It can also be argued that Austin Meadows is not the top-rated high school position player in the 2013 MLB draft from Loganville, Georgia. Depending on which scout you talk to and on which day, either Meadows (from Grayson High School) or outfielder Clint Frazier (from Loganville High School) might be ranked higher. ...

A couple of feel-good notes from earlier today:

Minnesota native and former St. Paul Saint, LRP Caleb Thielbar was recalled and will take the roster spot of LP Pedro Hernandez. He was impressive in his big-league debut as well. (The TwinsDaily Roster & Payroll page has been updated to reflect this move as well as all the others that have occurred.)

Chris Colabello was named IL Player of the Week for last week when he batted .586 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI. Rob Antony said over the weekend that he is under consideration to be called up to help the Twins. He also played some corner outfield over the weekend. (You hearing this, Parms?) ...
