  • Twins Promote Matt Carson Over Chris Parmelee

Paragon Sports Marketing Agency tweeted today that the Minnesota Twins are promoting Matt Carson from AAA-Rochester to complete the roster moves they started after yesterdayís afternoon game. Carson, who has primarily played right field in Rochester, was likely added to provide outfield depth due to the day-to-day status of outfielders Denard Span and Ben Revere. Span hurt his shoulder in a game on Sunday and had not played since. Revere hurt his ankle in yesterdayís game.

Matt Carson Will Join The Twins On ThursdayThis is not Carsonís first time in the majors. The 31-year-old had exactly 100 at-bats with the Aís in 2009 and 2010, hitting .200. This year with Rochester, he was hitting .277 with a 785 OPS, including 14 HR, 102 strikeouts and 33 walks. In his career in AAA, he has hit .280 with a .500 slugging percentage. According to Seth Stohs, he is often lauded by for his attitude, work effort and class, as well as his play on the field.

The Twins chose to promote Carson over first base/right field prospect Chris Parmelee, who is tearing up AAA with a .348 batting average and 15 home runs in just 181 at-bats. This likely indicates the Twins feel that Span and Revere are healthy enough to be playing regularly soon. It is likely better for Parmelee, who is just 24 ear old, to develop by playing every day in AAA than only occasionally with the Twins.

However, Parmelee could still be an option soon. The Twins have been slow to place their players on the Disabled List this season and itís certainly possible they could do so with Span retroactively. Also, after September 1st, rosters can expand to up to 40 players. It is likely Parmelee would be promoted at that time.

Yesterday, the Twins demoted pitchers Luis Perdomo and Jeff Manship to Rochester and reactivated pitcher Anthony Swarzak from the disabled list. An additional move was anticipated to fill out the 25-man roster. The delay was likely to give the Twins an extra day to evaluate the status of Revere and Span and their ability to play regularly. Also, the Twins will need to make a subsequent 40 man roster move as Pedro Florimon grabbed the final spot when he was called up on Wednesday. Matt Capps could go to the 60 Day DL, or someone will need to be DFAd.

I doubt the 40-man room comes from someone on the 25-man roster. It would either be a move to the 60-day DL for Capps (likely) or a DFA from someone in the minors.

Glad that he made it. He deserved it. I would not be surprised to see Tosoni get DFA'd or Nishioka (nobody will claim him). Manship and Perdomo too, but the last too might get claimed and they have been pitching pretty well in AAA and the Twins are flirting with Rochester. Maybe they even keep Parmelee there for that reason as well. But good to see Carson get another chance.

I think this is the right move for now. If Span gets moved to the DL (which I cynically view as inevitable, even knowing nothing of the situation) then we'll see Parmelee.

As a rule the Twins wait at least a week before placing them on the DL and then a couple more days before seeing a specialist.
If I were cynical I'd say they do this to save a week of major league pay for the guy they bring up but that can't be the real reason.

Parmelee is apparently not trusted, and perhaps rightfully so, to log a lot of outfield innings in RF.

Unless they move some guys in the off-season, there will be no room for him in Gardy's lineup.

It was a good year to sign with the Twins as a minor league free agent! Let's swapout Butera for Towles. Maybe Casilla for Holimon. We pretty much ate up the serviceable pitchers.

The Twins have been dulluged with the minor league FAs because Terry Ryan/co. dont like the people in the organization that they themselves drafted. Gets em a backhanded compliment of 'look how well they signed these retread FA's' when it should be seen as a criticism of them, in my eyes.

I dont' know if that's true, though I suspect we'll find out soon enough. If they thought Span or Revere weren't going to return, I think we would see Parmelee out there.

I am 95% sure that the abundance of the MiLB FAs signed had to do that this was a walk year for Rochester and that the Rochester AAA team really really stunk the place the last couple years. Same thing (but they did not stink the place much before) with New Britain. They had several MiLB FAs (and waiver claims) start the season in New Britain, including a couple who are with the Twins now (Florimon, Mastroianni) another one who just left the Twins (Perdomo) and a couple of over the hill non-prospects (one of whom has been decent , Colabello; the other one not so, Roof) and a couple of older pitchers (Luke French, Brad Thompson -gone now- and Aaron Thompson) So I really think that a lot of that was part of the affiliation dance show. Were there any prospects hurt? In retrospect, maybe a couple of pitchers who were stuck in New Britain (but there was so much shuffling to the Twins going on that people moved up and down) and maybe Deibinson Romero and Chris Herrmann. That's about it.

I go back n forth on the AAA experience for a player and its just as solid at AA to get that playing time.
Ive said it this whole year....I get frustrated by getting rid of our own players we developed who sign elsewhere (Solarte, DMartin, BRoberts for ex) & go sign the same players from other organizations INSTEAD of keeping our own guys.
With the solid New Brit lineup...next year will really tell how the organization thinks of our own.

I was really mad about Solarte (and he is still young). The only issue was that he needed a 40-man spot and they decided that Jeff Gray and Matt Maloney (at that point) deserved it more. That was total BS (both literally and figuratively).

Dustin Martin was cut right at the end of Spring Training or even at the beginning of the season. As far as Roberts goes this team is full of OFs. The 3 they brought over (Carson, W.Ramirez and Mastroianni) before the season started are better players. The two they got during the season (Cleat Thomas and Eric Komatsu esp. are not) And they have a ton of OFs. But that Solarte thing hurts. Might have been something extracurricular like the Jairo Perez situation... who knows.

(And in no way I am defending Rantz and the way he does business... this should be pretty obvious by now Just trying to be fair.)

.361/.398/.555 3HR, 21 RBI, 4SB in the American Association (Indy) for the Wichita Wingnuts (13 gaqmes) and the Grand Prairie Airhogs (15 games) #PMKI in other words. Will probably sign a free agent contract with another organization soon.

There are some rumors and some claims about people knowing what happened and got released but (really) those things cannot be talked in public because of legal implications.

This strikes me as Gardy being comfortable with Mastro/Doumit in the OF and he wouldn't have played Parmalee. Which wouldn't be unusual for this team - in that case - would rather he stay at AAA.

FWIW, within the last couple weeks I heard Gardy talk about Parmelee in the outfield and he didn't pull the usual managerspeak one uses when one doesn't want to crap on his own player. He stated straight out that he thinks he can play there and wants to give him that chance.

Ive heard the same interviews where he thought he could get him 4/5 starts week right now, just resting every starter that it would effect a day per week.
Carson is definately a Terry Ryan move
