  • Chris Colabello to be promoted to Twins

Though we do not know the follow up transactions (DL and 40 man implications), Twins Daily has learned from multiple sources that Chris Colabello has been promoted to the Minnesota Twins. He'll have a very early morning flight and hope to join the Twins for Wednesday's noon game in Atlanta.

It is possible that Colabello will take the 25-man roster spot of Trevor Plouffe, who was kneed in the back of the head on a slide at second base. He left the game and was clearly woozy. Likely Eduardo Escobar and Jamey Carroll will get time at third base. (We will update as we learn more.)

Colabello is not on the Twins 40 man roster, so along with needing a roster spot for Sam Deduno on Friday, they will need a second spot for Colabello. Most likely, Darin Mastroianni and Tim Wood will be put on the 60 Day Disabled List.

Colabello is a tremendous story. After spending seven years in the Can-Am (Independent) League, he was signed by the Twins last spring, with no guarantee of making a roster. He made the New Britain roster and drove in 98 runs on the year. This off-season, he dominated the Mexican Winter League and earned an invitation to Twins big league spring training. He had to leave the team for a couple of weeks to play for the surprising WBC team from Italy. He returned to camp, was optioned to Rochester and has raked since then.

Colabello has been one of the best hitters in minor league baseball this season. He is now hitting .358/.417/.659 (1.076) with 17 doubles, 12 home runs and 39 RBI.

Bobby Tewksbary is a long-time friend and offseason hitting instructor of Colaballo. He tweeted his excitement at the news of his friend's big league promotion. He told Twins Daily in an e-mail:

"Every player has their own story and their own hurdles. To go undrafted, to play 7 years of indy ball, to keep playing when so many people wonder when you are just going to shut it down already... I know how much time he has invested and how thankful he is to the Twins for the opportunity they have given him. His story is rare if not unique. It is an amazing accomplishment that he put himself in the position he is in right now. As they say, getting there is one thing, staying is another. We always talk about how it is the same game, the same dimensions, the same rules. You work and prepare each day to give yourself the best chance to be successful and that doesn't change. It is just very exciting. I couldn't be happier for him and his family."

Chris Colabello has come a long way, and he has earned this opportunity. Colabello is the type of person, with the type of story, that has to make people love the great game of baseball!

Could it be Ramirez that's destined for Rochester?

On a side note, I hope Plouffe is OK and not headed to the DL. I also hope Gardy comes to his senses and puts Dozier back in the lineup, although if Plouffe is injured, that situation might take care of itself.

First of all, your "Bobby Tewksbary" link is broken.

      Secondly, Bob Tewksbury, hitting instructor?

Love that people are breaking down his possible flight info here.

Thanks for the news, Seth. And congrats to Colabello!

Per Phil Miller, Plouffe to 7-day concussion DL, Mastro to 60-day DL.

      No big surprises there.

      And welcome, Mr. Colabello!

While he hasn't played it for the Twins, Colabello did put it in a fair amount of time at the Hot Corner from 2009-2011. Not sure of they'd consider him an emergency option there.

It honestly would be pretty boneheaded for the twins to make any 25 man move other than Plouffe to the 7 day list. Between a knee to the head and a 97mph heater to the back/shoulder, he almost certainly feels awful today and could use a few days off, concussion or no. Give the Italian Stallion a week, and if Plouffe is ready to come back, then you can make a decision about who needs a refresher course at AAA.

The one thing I can guarantee though is that they won't send Dozier down today. That would leave them with Florimon, Carroll, and Escobar playing every inning of every game, with NO MI backup.

Ha, yeah, normally it takes the Twins at least 7 days to make these decisions.

Can't wait for Colabello. You never know, perhaps they found the next Michael Morse.

I think it's time for Hicks/Arcia to head to AAA. And/or Parmelee. Not much that can be called up to help. Colabello is a start. Give him a lot of at bats.

Send DJ Romero to AAA while they're at it. He was supposed to start there and now that he's hitting at AA,move him up.

Keep Parmelee up because this is his year. I'm not satisified with him, but triple A isn't going to help him. Send Arcia and/or Hicks down soon.

I love the Mike Morse comparison. Can we get Colabello a nice "beast" nickname or a good "Take on Me" soundtrack that the crowd gets into? (they still play it in DC even though Morse is now back in Seattle.)

I hope that Colabello turns into the Twins DH for the next half dozen years.

Well, that makes perfect sense...after all, he's almost 30 and he's played a whopping 13 games in the OF between indy ball and the minors over the last 8 or 9 years...

But hey, he's played 4 game this year in the OF and had two chances during those games...I'm sure he's ready for the major league OF..

That heavy snark isn't directed at you crarko, just my frustration that Gardy believes anyone can play anywhere so he just plugs them into wherever. This is the majors, hard enough to play ONE position well enough to get here and be major league quality.

Lefty starting, Arcia and Parmelee scuffling, what's to lose, when the Twins have lost this many in a row?

Actually, I wouldn't mind him breaking out the old third baseman's glove, either.

Arcia should stay, Parmelee should be sent down.

      Reverse that.

Parmelee has proven he can dominate AAA. It's time to give him his extended chance to get results at the MLB level. Some time in AAA isn't going to hurt Arcia and can help in the long run.

Would you rather he didn't play? Doubtful they would bench Morneau.
