• Twins Florida Instructional League Roster

Every year following the long minor league season, the Twins invite many prospects and recent draft picks back to Ft. Myers for the Florida Instructional League. For the most part, this time is pretty self-explanatory. It is a place for extra instruction for young players. For 2012 draft picks, it is likely a preview of what to expect from minor league spring training next March. Sometimes, players go to “Instructs” to learn a new position or a secondary position. You’ll notice at least one position player doing that this year. It's also a place for players who missed time for whatever reason to get extra time.
Along with the instruction, teams do play games. It is very similar to Extended Spring Training. The Red Sox, Orioles and Rays have nearby facilities, so there are games. We won’t get any official statistics, but occasionally we get some reports on how players are doing.

With that introduction, here is a look at the players who will be participating in Florida Instructional League starting next week.

    PITCHERS

DJ Baxendale, Jose (JO) Berrios, Hudson Boyd, Josh Burris, JT (Jon) Chargois, Tyler Duffey, Andrew Ferreira, Dallas Gallant, Tyler Jones, Zach Jones, Yorman Landa, Brett Lee, Austin Malinowski, Andre Martinez, Chris Mazza, Mason Melotakis, Kaleb Merck, Josue Montanez, Luis Nunez, Hein Robb, Gonzalo Sanudo. (note – Luke Bard will be there rehabbing)

    CATCHERS

Kelly Cross, Jorge Fernandez, Tyler Grimes, Matt Koch, Bryan Santy

    INFIELDERS

Niko Goodrum, Travis Harrison, DJ Hicks, Aderling Mejia, Levi Michael, German Minier, Jorge Polanco, Eddie Rosario, Miguel Sano, Daniel Santana, Kennys Vargas

    OUTFIELDERS

Byron Buxton, Romy Jimenez, Max Kepler, Zach Larson, Jeremias Pineda, Jake Proctor, Dereck Rodriguez, Adam Walker

When there are games, the team will be managed by Tommy Watkins with Henry Bonilla as his pitching coach. GCL manager Ramon Borrego , New Britain manager Jeff Smith and FT. Myers hitting coach Jim Dwyer will also be on the coaching staff. Pitching Coordinator Eric Rasmussen and Hitting Coordinator Bill Springman will work there. Paul Molitor will also be there as an instructor.

This is a good opportunity for more instruction for young developing players.

Do the players get paid for this time, or is it like spring training and they are on their own nickel? For that matter, do players get paid for EST in the spring?

The players get their meal money and room for Est and Instructs. Spring Training they get the room and hotel food.

Paul Molitor is about to join 1500espn's Reusse and Mackey to talk about the Instructional League (Where he's heading now) and other minor league topics.

Koch is fringe prospect but has trouble as a catcher
Michaels future is at 2B, not SS

I would love to see the power shots at the Batting Practices during Instructionals in Ft. Myers, with Vargas - Sano - Buxton - Hicks - Walker - and some of the other guys. With Buxton - Sano and Walker at 18 - 19 & 20 yrs old respectively - the power potential in MN looks bright. Now to limit the K's

So what about next season at Fort Myers? Do they still have Michaels play mostly at short and Rosario at second or do they move Rosario back to the OF part-time?

I've said it before, but with just the 3 guys ahead of him in OF at this camp (Buxton, Kepler and Pineda) alone, why isn't Derek Rodriguez lookng at a faster way to get to the majors by catching like his Pop?

Have you seen Derek Rodriguez in real life? Let me find a shot of his from ST. I think that would answer your question...

      There you go:

(and this thing is not letting me embed images unless you upload them locally too... gee)

He is about AJ Pettersen size

Sounds like a perfect match for Pudge at the same age.

      From Baseball Reference:

      Adam Pettersen

      Adam Jesse Pettersen

      Bats: Right, Throws: Right
      Height: 5' 9", Weight: 170 lb.

      Iván Rodríguez

Ivan (Torres) Rodriguez (Pudge or I-Rod)
      Position: Catcher
      Bats: Right, Throws: Right
      Height: 5' 9", Weight: 205 lb.

Regardless, wouldn't you agree that Dereck Rodriguez, with the plethora of young OF prospects, is heavily blocked at advancing quickly through the Twins system?

well... they are 4-5 OF and 2 Cs in most rosters, so I really see no issues. Also, at this point there are probably 8-10 OFs ahead of him in the minors (let's say the beginning of 2013 and I am not counting the MiLB FAs that Rantz will sign). There are probably 8-10 Cs ahead of him as well. So the numbers make me think that he has higher likelihood in advancing as an OF plus you have to add another year to learn another position as a C.

That is academic. Pettersen is 170 lbs with a diving weight belt on Dereck Rodriguez is also close to 150. Stick arms stick legs. Nothing like Pudge and Pudge was closer to 225 than 205...

      Thanks for the roster Seth.

The two most interesting tid bits I get from the roster are, 1) German Minier being there as a 16+ year old who hasn't played in the D.R. Tells me they are very high on this young man and want to get started; and 2) Seeing Kennys Vargas will be there. After missing most of this year with his suspension and odd rules that turned 50 games into about 125, he needs all the work he can get. Secondly, being invited tells us the Twins remain high on him and aren't ticked off because of his mistake.

Seth, I had heard several times recently that Kyle Gibson would be working in Fall Instructs before going to Arizona in early October. Is he there and just not included on the roster?

Speaking about A. J. above, do you think he wasn't invited because of his wedding this fall?

Thanks Seth, have a wonderful weekend!
