  1. Paying to see the home team take batting practice

by , 04-11-2013 at 05:30 PM (Nevada Twins Fan)
Article: Powers: Nick Blackburn makes adjustments-bp.jpg

There is already a lengthy thread in the forum, about the Twins' abortive offer to let fans watch home-team batting practice for $15; I did not get too worked up about the topic at first but I contributed and the obsessive reader may see a theme or two repeated here. 3. Q&A with Jake Mauer (Part I)

    by , 04-10-2013 at 11:43 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
As you know, I was able to spend four days in Cedar Rapids last week. I arrived in time for their Meet the Kernels event at Perfect Game Field. At a press conference, hitting coach Tommy Watkins introduced me to manager Jake Mauer. Over the next few days, I had a chance to talk to Watkins, pitching coach Gary Lucas and Mauer quite a bit. Below, you can read Part 1 of a two-part Q&A with the Kernels manager.

Before we start, here is a little background. Jake Mauer is the older brother ...

  4. Wet Wednesday in the Minors

by , 04-10-2013 at 10:19 PM (North Dakota Twins Fan)
With last night's loss, the Twins failed to win a series for the first time in 2013. Things didn't go much better tonight for Minnesota as the club fell to the Kansas City Royals. It was the first time the team had been swept in 2013 and the Twins only scored five runs in the series.

Miguel Sano hit his first home run of the year on Tuesday evening. He has only been held hitless in one game so far this year and he was hitting .421 entering play today. The Miracle had a 5-0 record entering ...
  5. Game 9 - Zombies.

    by , 04-10-2013 at 10:15 PM
Another bland game, suffered through on a Minnesota night where the only thing worse than the grey ugliness in the sky is the twenty feet of snow coming next. The Twins didn't plate a run in a game. 11 strikes outs. Swept by the Royals. I sincerely hope we can bury this game under the snow and forget it.

Earlier in my day, I enjoyed the Rue Morgue Podcast. Horror expert Andrea Subissati mentioned a Wade Davis, the ethnobiologist whose work regarding voodoo and zombies was the direct ...
  6. My Overly Optimistic Two Cents on the Twins "Plan"

    by , 04-10-2013 at 04:14 PM
I believe their plan is this based on what I have read, heard, etc.:

    1. Rid the books of any dead salary for the 2015 season outside of Mauer
    2. Rebuild the farm system through the draft & international signings.
    a. They are off to a good start in this regards but would benefit from more frontline SP depth and up the middle talent
    3. Spend sparingly in Free Agency for 2013,’14, ’15 &’16
    4. Over the next 3 seasons get our ...

  7. Will the real Twins base stealers, please stand up?

by , 04-10-2013 at 06:46 AM (North Dakota Twins Fan)
Twins fans have been spoiled in the last two seasons.

Ben Revere made base stealing look easy. Even Denard Span could swipe a base or two if the club needed it. Both of these men are in different uniforms to start the 2013 season. In fact, three of the top four base stealers from the 2012 Twins are no longer with the organization.

Last year the Twins stole 135 bases, which ranked first in the American League. In 2011, the club finished in 10 place in the AL with 92 stolen ...
  8. Baseball in Hell

    by , 04-10-2013 at 01:14 AM
    Hello again.

I honestly did not think I would be able to communicate with the living up until a few weeks ago. In my adult life I embraced Atheism. When my organic nature expired on Earth, I was surprised to find that there was an after-life. Fortunately or unfortunately, my current residence is hell, under the dominion of Satan. Life in Hell is somewhat strange and I will try to explain that in this written piece.

First and foremost, I would like to apologize to everyone ...

ID:	3715You would think with a moniker like “Vanimal” that Vance Worley would be a rock star-party hard individual. Some meathead with torn off sleeves and who breaks “No Pepper” signs on the backstop with a 99-mile per hour fastball.

    That’s simply not Vance.

He is not a huck-n-chuck hurler who puts little thought in the process and just pitches on animal instincts. He realizes that his stuff isn’t electric. He knows that his fastball doesn’t wow radar ...

  10. Tuesday Turn Through the Minors

    by , 04-09-2013 at 11:53 PM (SethSpeaks.net)
The Twins had a rough going in the early innings on Tuesday night. In the minor leagues, the Red Wings got a big, late-inning home run that led to a win. The Rock Cats scored nine runs for the second straight game yet they played a game that was close until the ninth. The Miracle won a 1-0 game thanks to great pitching and a big home run from a big prospect. Cedar Rapids’ game was postponed due to rain, but be sure to check out the rest of the Organizational Report.

    The Twins fell 7-4 ...

  11. Game 8 - Pelfrey on the Small Screen

    by , 04-09-2013 at 11:14 PM
With the evening pre-booked, I monitored this Twins game from my cell phone while revisiting cherished David Cronenberg movies from years past.

At least, I started to. After it took me days to scroll down through MLB At Bat listings for Mike Pelfrey's first inning, there was no need to devote excessive brain power to watching the Twins continue their swirl down the drain.

Three home runs was nice, though.

Monitoring the game on your phone is as close as you ...

ID:	3708For all the buzz he built up during spring training, it didn’t take long for Aaron Hicks to sour the widespread enthusiasm surrounding him. We’re barely over a week into the season and already we’re seeing calls for the rookie center fielder to be shipped to the minors, or at least the bottom of the lineup.

In fairness, Hicks has done his part. Through eight games, he has been flat-out overmatched, with two hits, two walks and 13 strikeouts in 32 plate appearances. ...

  13. Kernels First Impressions

    by , 04-09-2013 at 10:52 PM (SD Buhr/Jim Crikket)
With Tuesday night's rainout in Wisconsin, the Kernels have five games under their belts. It's far too soon to draw any firm conclusions about this year's club, but those games were enough to make some first impressions. First of all, they've put up a 4-1 record, so that's a pretty good first impression, in itself.

With the obvious “small sample size” warning label appropriately affixed, here are just a few more things that have stood out to me over the first five games of the season:

  14. Territory Train: Dining with the Developing

    by , 04-09-2013 at 05:40 PM

    Spring Training - Game 6 @Baltimore 03/07-kernels.jpg

So when does the good part happen?

There may be fans who have lost their faith in the Minnesota Twins over the last two seasons. But, as many of the Twins Daily contributors have pointed out over the last several months, there's plenty sunshine that's just over the horizon for this organization.

While it may be a couple years before you can witness that selection of talent at Target Field, the prospect horizon line is physically ...
