Jonathan Lucroy and the Twins-Winning now and in the Future

This was just an idea that I thought that I would put forward. I am not saying that I agree with or promote all of these ideas.

I have been thinking that if the Twins want Jonathan Lucroy they will need to trade Major League proven talent, but how do they do that and hang on to prospects when they don’t have much to offer? Today I will look at a way tha...

WARNE: Trevor May; A Pleasant Surprise

Posted by Brandon Warne in BW on the Beat, 06 May 2015 · 104 views

Trevor May’s career got off to an inauspicious start. After wearing out Triple-A pretty well — 2.85 ERA, 8.6 K/9, 1.16 WHIP — May was summoned for an Aug. 9 start last season against the A’s. May only lasted two innings, struck out none and walked seven as just 28 of his 63 pitches went for strikes.

May didn’t complete five innings until his third start...

Is Trevor May Paving Alex Meyer's Path?

Posted by Off The Baggy in Off The Baggy, 06 May 2015 · 197 views

Before the 2013 Major League Baseball season, the Minnesota Twins dealt talented outfielders Denard Span and Ben Revere to new organizations. In sending Revere to the Philadelphia Phillies, Ruben Amaro gave the Twins two pitchers in return. One was a former rookie phenom in TrevVance Worley, but the bigger chip was perceived to be prospect Trevor May. Wit...

In an effort to get back in the swing of writing about the Twins consistently, I'm going back to an old well: Cliff-Notes. After all, I end up checking the cliff notes of everything book I teach for plagiarism, I figure this is just getting ahead of the curve. (For the start on cliff-notes I made before September crushed my baseball loving soul click here...

REVIEW: 'In Pursuit of Pennants' by Armour and Levitt

Posted by Cody Christie in North Dakota Twins Fan, 05 May 2015 · 112 views

Every team longs for a chance to add to the legacy of their franchise. How can they get another flag to fly over the stadium and become a part of baseball's legendary past?

This is the premise behind the recent book release, In Pursuit of Pennants: Baseball Operations from Deadball to Moneyball by Mark L. Armour and Daniel R. Levitt . These two authors...

When will Byron Buxton be called up?

When will Buxton be called up?

He is ripping up AA (.880 OPS, 3 HR, 5 3B, 7 SB).

We have seen Terry move position players quicker, like Santana, Vargas, Arcia, and Hicks. We have a need in CF. And I think they would love a little extra buzz this year.

I think after the super 2 deadline he is up.

Now leading Off for the Kernels: Tanner English

You might not guess it just to look at him, as he patrols centerfield for the Cedar Rapids Kernels, but there’s a good chance that Tanner English is among the most athletic ballplayers on the roster.

First Update on Breakthrough Prospect Batters

Posted by Shane Wahl in Field of Twins, 03 May 2015 · 109 views

It's the beginning of May, so I thought it would be a good time to evaluate my 2015 breakthrough prospect candidates based on their first weeks this year. Here I highlight the position players and will focus on the pitchers tomorrow.

Lewin Diaz and Jack Barrie have not started playing yet this season.
Jorge (JJ) Fernandez (CDR) was injured a few week...

A former first round pick delivered a walk-off victory in Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon, in a game where both teams combined for thirty-hits and twenty-seven runs to provide the most entertaining game of the year. Elsewhere, there were three quality starts from starting pitchers, and standout games from several hitters.

Twins Minor League Report (4/30): The Stars Shine Bright I just do not understand how baseball works. The Twins got all over perennial Cy Young candidate Chris Sale on Thursday night en route to trouncing the Chicago White Sox 12-2. Sale was out after just three innings and he had giving up nine runs, the most in his career. Trevor May gave up just a pair of runs despite scattering ten hits, but couldn't finish...

Nolasco for Van Slyke?

Posted by Target Field of Dreams in Target Field of Dreams' Blog, 29 April 2015 · 574 views

Given our logjam of pitchers and the Dodgers rash of injuries...seems like we maybe could be a trade match with them.

Ideally we could give them Nolasco (he loved it there and he did alright for them) and they would give us Van Slyke. We could use the outfield defense and he absolutely crushes LH pitching.

I know what you are thinking...why would anyon...

To Win World Series, Twins Must Learn to Win on the Road

Posted by Wookiee of the Year in Blog Wookiee of the Year, 27 April 2015 · 151 views

Those who know their Minnesota Twins history will know that the Twins’ World Series wins in 1987 and 1991 are two of only three World Series ever where the home team won every game. Additionally, in their 1965 World Series appearance, the home team won the first 6 games before the Dodgers took the Series in Game 7 at the Met.

This made me wonder: Do the...

Offense, Not Starting Pitching, Has Been Twins' Achilles

Posted by PogueBear in Underwriting the Twins, 27 April 2015 · 229 views

Conventional wisdom heading into the MLB season had the Twins' offense, which returned essentially all its key 2014 pieces plus Torii Hunter, leading the team to a slightly improved 2015, albeit in a difficult division. Beyond Hughes and Santana, the starting pitching and an "iffy" bullpen were perceived weaknesses. That script has been completely flipped...

This Week in Rochester

After two weather related cancelations, the Red Wings finished the week by playing a double header against the Syracuse Chiefs. Rochester had been on the road for the past two weeks, sweeping Scranton then being swept by Pawtucket and finishing by taking two of three against Syracuse.

Rochester’s biggest struggle so far this season has been their offense...

TwinsTakes - Balking at controversy? Talk the Balk! Stealing Home - can you balk the balk?
Last night during the Minnesota Twins game against the Kansas City Royals, there was a controversial play in the top of the 2nd inning. With the Twins up 3-0, the bases loaded and 2 outs, Kennys Vargas was at the plate, Torii Hunter was on 3rd, Joe Mauer was on 2nd and Brian Dozier was on 1st. The count was 0 and 1...

Scott Boras New Idea - Panels Decide when a player is ready

Posted by tobi0040 in tobi0040's Blog, 22 April 2015 · 263 views

Scott Boras, still complaining about Kris Bryant and Addison Russell, thinks a panel should decide if a young player is ready to make the team out of spring training.

Coincidentally, this would benefit Scott Boras.

I think a rule or panel that would make a team give up roster decisions to a third party is...um, far-fetched at best.

Sample Sizes: What Are They Good For? Absolutely Nothing.

Posted by Twins and Losses in Twins and Losses, 22 April 2015 · 197 views

Sample Sizes: What Are They Good For? Absolutely Nothing. The Twins got off to a very rough start for the 2015-16 season going 1-6 in the first week which is about the worst possible start for a new manager in Paul Molitor. They didn’t even manage a run until their third game, but the second week of the season has been quite the turnaround.

One thing that has surprised me about the Twins is the play of Phil Hu...

Fanfare for the Journeyman Def. jour·ney·man \-mən\
: a worker, performer, or athlete who is experienced and good but not excellent

In the nomenclature of the game we have many names for the journeyman. On competitive teams we typically use the more endearing terms: role player, utility man, pinch hitter, defensive replacement. But on a losing team we tend to describe them in less...
