  1. Twins Minor League Report (8/28): Summers Shines

There was a ton of exciting action in the Twins farm system on Wednesday. Matt Summers took his Florida State League leading ERA to the mound for the Miracle. The Kernels were set to face off against former Twins pitcher Scott Baker as he works his way back from injury. New Britain found themselves in a back and forth contest that went well into the Eastern League night.

Let's check out what happened down on the pond.

On Saturday night, the Twins faced off against White Sox ace Chris Sale, widely regarded as one of the best pitchers in all of baseball in just his second season as a full-time starter. They countered with an “ace” of their own in Canadian lefty Andrew Albers, a 27-year-old journeyman who was pitching in the independent Can-Am league as recently as 2010. I refer to Albers as an ace not because I believe that he is one (far from it), but because just two ...
  3. Scotty Doesn't Know: What is wrong with Scott Diamond?

From diamond in the rough to just plain rough.

For Twins starter Scott Diamond, it’s been a tale of two seasons. One of the lone bright spots on a 2012 Twins team that lost 96 games en route to a second straight last place finish in the AL Central, Diamond managed to go 12-9 with a 3.54 ERA over 173 IP, good enough for 2.3/2.4 WAR depending on your preference. Heading into the offseason, he was the only Twins starter assured of a spot in the 2013 rotation, and was generally expected ...

  4. What's wrong with Scott Diamond?

Something isn't right with Scott Diamond.

The man who was supposed to be a calming force in the Twins starting rotation has become a punching bag for opponents. He hasn't won a game since June 20th and he gave up four runs in a little over five innings in that start. A sophomore slump has hit Diamond hard and it's tough to know what the Twins can do about it.

Since June 9th, Diamond has struggled mightily on mound. In his eight starts during that stretch, he has failed ...

The Twins are on a 70-win pace, which would be a huge improvement and a giant disappointment at the same time. Prior to the season, if you had told me the Twins were going to win 70 games, I'd have laughed so hard that my pants would have fallen down. I never wore belts. After the first third of the season, ...
  6. Which Pitcher Will Lose His Job Due to Kyle Gibson’s Promotion?

With all of the hype and excitement surrounding the Kyle Gibson promotion to the majors, the Minnesota Twins behind closed doors are likely pondering a much more complicated question: who is going to get the axe to make room for Gibson long-term? Twins’ General Manager Terry Ryan stated that once he called up Gibson—baring some historically awful performances—it would likely be for good, which means that someone is going to have to be removed from the rotation unless the team opts to go to a six-man ...

  8. The Curious Case of Kyle Gibson

The middle of June has come and gone and there is no sign of Kyle Gibson in the Twin Cities.

Teams like the Rays and the Mets are calling up top prospects like Wil Myers and Zack Wheeler because the deadline has passed for players to qualify for Super Two status. This means the Rays and Mets can control these high level players for a big chunk of the next decade.

Gibson has a different story than some other players. The former first round pick entered the Twins system ...

    The Scott Diamond Matrix?

    I made you a matrix:

Plus Stuff Jordan Zimmermann Sam Deduno
Average Stuff Scott Diamond Rich Robertson

I chose to use the word "average" to be kind to all stakeholders. By average, ...

Welp. The Twins weren't really supposed to be good or even decent this season, so a 2-7 homestand isn't crazy. It's more disappointing, after what seemed like a such a positive start. Regardless, this franchise is clearly trending upward, even if this past week doesn't reflect that.

The thing that struck me the most from the weekend was another shaky Scott Diamond start. I did a detailed breakdown ...
  11. Wha Happened? #6 (Indians, Red Sox, Orioles and White Sox)

Rumors of our demise our greatly exaggerated. Rumors of the school year ending, our student teacher leaving and our work load increasing dramatically are absolutely accurate. Here now, a pseudo-recap of the weeks since the Twins last got a day off.

It's getting close to the end of the first fourth of the season and the Twins are still flirting with the .500 mark. There is a lot of baseball left to play but it has been an encouraging first portion of the season for Twins fans. Some surprise pitching performances, a good offense and a stingy bullpen have the club in range of the top of the division.

So how did this Twins team get here and is this pace sustainable for the remainder of the season? ...

  14. Weekly Links-N-Thinks

The Twins keep finding ways to surprise as the team still sits around the .500 mark and it is close to a month and a half into the season. Minnesota's bats finally woke up in Boston with some big numbers put up in the four game series by Oswaldo Arcia and Joe Mauer. The club took three out of the four games to close out their recent road trip.

This weekend the Baltimore Orioles are coming to Target Field for a three game set. Baltimore is off to another good start after last year's ...
