ID:	7289When the Minnesota Twins signed Kurt Suzuki this past offseason the focus was on his defensive capabilities and his offensive abilities were basically an afterthought.

“We wanted to add some leadership to help the pitching staff,” Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said in March. “We went out and got some starting pitching, but we also wanted somebody to help them on defense. With Joe [Mauer] moving to first, we were willing to sacrifice some offense ...

ID:	7187Over his career, Phil Hughes has seemingly been one solid secondary pitch away from taking over the world.

Since his prospect days, his curveball was considered this dangerous weapon. For Hughes, unfortunately, the pitch never manifested into that killer pitch as projected. Eventually, the pitch was unceremoniously dropped from his arsenal in 2012.

When asked why the deuce took the backseat to other pitches in his repertoire, Hughes cited ...
  3. Twins Game Attendance: The Honeymoon is Over

The Twins were 3-3 heading into opening day at Target Field, which frankly seemed a bit surprising considering the way they started the season. There seemed to be a faint hint of optimism about the team.

Could Chris Colabello could give us the “feel good” story of the season? Is Jason Kubel back? Would Jason Bartlett‘s injury spare us from having

Ron Gardenhire won his 1000th game today in Cleveland as the Twins beat the Indians 7-3. He's now part of a list that now includes 60 managers. Let's highlight some of the managers that are on this list.

The Manager with the most wins is the Philladelphia Athletics, Connie Mack, with ...

Calling the 2013 Rochester Red Wings season a roller coaster ride would be considered a drastic understatement. Rochester started off the year at 2-11, went on to finish the season 77-67, clinched a wild card birth, and made their first playoff appearance in seven years.

This years team is completely different, none of the current pitchers were on last years opening day roster, and just three position players from opening day are returning. ...

  7. Predicting the Opening Day Roster; Talk to Contact Ep 76

On this week's show there is a lot of discussion about recent subtractions (and an addition) to the Twins roster as they continue to trim down to their 25-man roster. Jason Kubel will make the team and both Scott Diamond and Vance Worley will be pitching elsewhere in 2014. We discuss who is the last man in/out as the Twins trim the roster to 25 and then we take a look ahead at who will be the division winners and playoff contenders for 2014. 9. Josmil Pinto and Enabling Ron Gardenhire

To begin, I like Ron Gardenhire. A lot of it stems from nostalgia, but I appreciate his candor, as well as his general stewardship of the Twins during his tenure with the team.

Like many, I have been confused and befuddled by many of his in-game decisions and substitutions, but ultimately, I don’t necessarily believe that a baseball manager has the impact that coaches in other sports ...

Last season in New Britain, I watched 4 or 5 of Trevor May's starts. I'm still higher on him than most people are, because a few things became apparent to me after watching him -- all of which are fixable (to a degree, anyway): 1) the defense behind him was sometimes lousy (I'm looking specifically at the left side of the infield -- Danny Santana and Miguel Sano), leading to extra pitches made and extra batters faced to get the job done; 2) control issues

  12. Phil Hughes' Long Curving History

ID:	6667Phil Hughes has been somewhat of an indecisive pitcher over his career when it comes to his repertoire.

Year in and year out, there has been an inability to choose a secondary pitch. While it has mainly been a big, slow curve, it has seen several variations followed by an abandonment in 2013 in favor of a slider. Hughes’ Year of the Slider produced mixed results with the pitch as opponents struggled against his new weapon in the season’s first-half, hitting ...
  13. The Bench Is The Biggest Question Mark Heading Into Spring Training

    Originally published at http://troystwinsdugout.wordpress.co...ring-training/

In looking at the Twins roster picture, the bench seems to be the biggest question mark. Who makes the 25 man roster coming out of spring training on the bench will be based upon several scenarios.

Recently, my dad and I did a half hour show where we discuss the roster at length. If you missed it, you can listen to it at the following ...
