  1. September Call Ups from Rochester

The Twins put three minor league teams in the playoffs and have seen them all falter. Cedar Rapids and Fort Myers both were defeated 2-0 and Rochester trails 2-1 in a best of five series. The Red Wings will need to win two straight at Pawtucket to advance in the International League playoffs.

When the Red Wings are eliminated, the Twins will call up a few of their players. Depending on injuries, that number could be as low as three or as high as five or six. My guess is that ...

Night two of playoff action saw plenty of stories to follow in the Twins farm system. Rochester was kicking off their postseason run with a game in front of their hometown fans and Cedar Rapids had to go on the road. Fort Myers was at home but their season was on the line and a loss would mean the end of their title chances.

  3. Twins Minor League Report (8/14): Atherton Sparkles

http://nodaktwinsfan.comThe Twins bullpen had been solid in recent weeks before laying an egg at the hands of the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday afternoon. Casey Fien gave up three runs and later in the game Glen Perkins and Ryan Pressly allowed some late inning runs. Joe Mauer had five hits and came within one hit of tying Kirby Puckett's team record of six in a game.

There was some exciting action this evening as multiple teams were part of walk-off wins. Not all of those walk-offs ...
  4. Twins Minor League Report (8/12): Gonsalves Deals in Appy Debut

For those of you that read this regularly - and clamored for Andrew Albers to get his chance - you were probably pretty excited to see him as good as he was tonight for the Twins. Staff Ace? If a guy that doesn't hit 90 and is the definition of "pitching-to-contact" isn't exactly what the Twins are looking for in a Staff Ace, well...

Today was also a big day for current minor leaguers recognized around baseball.

Let's take a spin around the minor leagues.

  5. Twins Minor League Report (8/5): Dean Dazzles

Today's baseball news was focused primarily on 12 players who received 50-game PED suspensions and one other who received a 211-game suspension and has decided to appeal. I haven't turned on ESPN, but I'm sure you could get a more in-depth run-down on these 13 players within 30 seconds on turning it on.

Fortunately, no Twins were involved. Former Twin Danny Valencia was investigated and cleared. It turns out he had higher-than-normal amount of "swag", but nothing illegal from Biogenesis. ...

By virtually every measure, the Minnesota Twins are a very bad baseball team. Entering Friday night’s game against the Astros, the Twins offense ranked 21st in both runs scored and wRC+. The starting pitching has been horrific even by recent Twins standards, ranking last in ERA (5.18), last in xFIP (4.56), and last in strikeouts (302) by an embarrassing margin. Lastly, the defense has been mediocre (12th in DRS) to bad (27th in UZR), depending on your metric ...

  7. Twins Minor League Report (7/24): Vargas Saves the Day

Since the Twins were playing on the West Coast, their afternoon game with the Angels went into the early evening in the Central time zone. Minnesota won the first two games of the series before things got a little dicey on Wednesday. Jared Weaver looked excellent on the mound but a bad infield fly call might have cost the Twins a chance to sweep the Angels.

With Joe Mauer on paternity leave for three days, Drew Butera was called up from Rochester. He has spent the entire season at ...
  8. Twins Minor League Report (7/23): Sano, Buxton homer

The second half of the minor league season is well under way. Some of the Twins affiliates are trying to find their way into the playoff race. A few of the farm teams are trying to fight through some injuries and keep players on the field. It will be an interesting couple of months leading up to the playoffs.

Earlier on Tuesday, a roster move had to be made to fit Nick Blackburn into the rotation for Rochester. His promotion from Double-A meant another pitcher had to go the opposite ...
  9. What does the Twins roster shake-up mean?

The Twins needed to make some kind of change during the All-Star break because the team scuffled in the week's leading up to the Mid-Summer Classic. There was going to be some players sent packing to Rochester and some fresh faces on the Twins roster. It had to happen and there were going to be some surprising names that would come up in the discussion for demotion.

There is pressure on multiple people in the Twins organization to find a way to be respectable in 2013. Ron Gardenhire ...
  10. Weekly Links-N-Thinks

The Twins put together a solid series against the White Sox to earn a three-game sweep. The rival Sox are plummeting in the AL Central but it is still nice to beat a hated foe. Powerful offensive performances and some decent pitching helped to club in the series. Now it will be time to see what the team can do when they head out on the road for a couple of series.

Some of the other Twins headlines from this week included: Justin Morneau finally ended the longest home run drought of ...
  11. Twins center field depth to be tested

At the end of last season, the Twins had plenty of options to play center field for the club. Denard Span and Ben Revere spent most of the year manning that position. Darin Mastroianni made a good fourth outfielder because he could play center field when it was necessary. Joe Benson and Aaron Hicks were on the 40-man roster but there wasn't much room for them with three other players in front of them.

Things have certainly gone from crowded to scarce in a hurry. As most fans know, ...

    The Scott Diamond Matrix?

    I made you a matrix:

    Plus Command Average Command
Plus Stuff Jordan Zimmermann Sam Deduno
Average Stuff Scott Diamond Rich Robertson

I chose to use the word "average" to be kind to all stakeholders. By average, ...
  13. What's the point of Clete Thomas?

Earlier this week, the Twins made a roster move to bring in some center field help for Aaron Hicks. For most of the season, the club has been without a back-up center fielder because Darin Mastroianni has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury. Even last week, Chris Parmelee had to play a defensive inning in center field in the late portion of a game. The Twins need a back-up center fielder and Thomas was one of the few options.

When Hicks was struggling at the beginning of the season, ...
  14. Weekly Links-N-Thinks

After some miserable baseball in Twins Territory, this week wasn't so bad for the hometown nine. It helps to play the lowly Brewers but it is still important to win games no matter who the opponent is. There were some close games but the club was able to steal a couple wins in Milwaukee before the two teams switched venues.

The trip back to Target Field turned out to be just as good for the Twins. Minnesota won both games on their home turf. It was also nice to see the team pound out ...
