  1. Cedar Rapids Kernels Game 6/28/14

I made the trip to Cedar Rapids to see the Kernels game yesterday. I decided to finally make the trip because Rod Carew was there signing autographs and Chad Christensen (My Adopt-a-Prospect) would be playing in the game. Christensen looks a lot bigger than I expected him to be (listed at 6'3" 210 lbs). He played 1B in this game and is having a very solid season for the Kernels, hitting .292/.351/.438/.790 and leading the team in runs (48), SB (18), and is near the top of the team in most offensive ...

The rest of the series was a real drag, although Jorge Polanco's triple in the ninth on Friday was pretty exciting. In fact, Jorge Polanco's everything is pretty exciting.

  3. Picking the Home Run Derby Contestants

Minnesota will host the All-Star Game in a little more than a couple weeks and this is the time of year where pundits start debating who should and who shouldn't be on the All-Star Game roster.

One of the most exciting events in almost 30 years since Minnesota last hosted the game is the Home Run Derby. In 1985,the last year the Twins were the host, the first HR Derby was held and this event has exploded to a full-day prime-time event.

It's always nice for the home team ...
  4. Twins Minor League Report (6/29): Strong Starting Pitching and Burdi's Debut

The Minnesota Twins were able to end their 10-game road losing streak against the Texas Rangers on Sunday afternoon, behind a solid bounce-back effort from starter Kyle Gibson and clutch hitting from Kendrys Morales and unexpected spark plug Jorge Polanco. Gibson went eight efficient innings, allowing just two runs on ninety-five pitches (69 for strikes). Morales provided the winning RBI with a ninth inning double down the line in left to score Sam Fuld, and Glen Perkins closed out the ...

  6. Joe Mauer, Michael Bradley and the Problem with Artistic Athletes

So I've been more or less completely consumed with the World Cup this month. Watching every match I can, reading interviews, reports, reviewing highlights, and writing like a maniac. But I still think of baseball (and can prove it with stuff on another blog), perhaps never more clearly than when I was watching a World Cup match with some friends last Thursday.

We needed a point against Germany, or some good fortune in another match. Being Minnesota sports fans, we fully anticipated ...
  7. Twins Minor League Report (6/28): Bryan Haar Homers Twice

When it rains, it pours. That was certainly the case Saturday in Minneapolis as the Twin Cities was drenched in yet another big rain storm. But it was also true down in Arlington where the Twins lost yet another road game to run their road losing streak to nine games. Kyle Gibson takes the hill on Sunday with a chance to send the Twins home on a positive note.

  8. Who is the Twins next manager?

I am very pro Gardenhire, overall. Though he and I do butt heads on occasion. Though I suppose he doesn't realize this on a daily basis or concern himself much with it.

At 56, Gardy is still a relatively young man. I see no relative signs of slowing down. But he has made comment in the recent past about wanting to manage the Twins, at least, until the signs of rebuilding and turnaround are apparent. In theory, the talent on the roster now, the deep talent in the minors that will hopefully ...
  9. Twins Minor League Report (6/27): Walk-off's and Bid For Perfection...

The Twins were lifeless for the entire game against Rangers starter Nick Tepesch, before Twins Daily’s #8 prospect Jorge Polanco made a big splash in the ninth inning with a two-RBI triple off closer Joakim Soria to make the score 5-4. Unfortunately, a Brian Dozier strikeout and Kurt Suzuki groundout would prevent him from becoming the Miracle ninth-inning hero.

In the minors it was a very eventful night, including two walk-off games and near history among the affiliates. I apologize ...

I say move Nolasco to pen, call up May.

    What you guys think?
  11. Twins Minor League Report (6/26): Nick Gordon Continues to Hit!

The Twins extended their road losing streak to seven games and were swept out of Anaheim after another ineffective Ricky Nolasco Start. Nolasco has been a disaster in just about every start he has made after his Twins debut.

With Danny Santana dealing with a sore hamstring and the the Twins already short on middle infielders, the Twins demoted Yohan Pino and called up Jorge Polanco all the way from High-A Fort Myers prior to yesterday's game. Polanco becomes the first Twins player ...
  12. What can we expect from Jorge Polanco?

Some rather unexpected news moved across the Internet on Thursday as we heard Jorge Polanco, he of High-A ball experience, would replace Yohan Pino on the 25-man roster in time for Thursday's game in Anaheim.

Manager Ron Gardenhire had been vocal about his desire to add another bench player at the expense of the pitching staff, but not many would have predicted the 20-year-old from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, would be the one to get the call to The Show.

    So ...

What Pino was this? Devoid of confidence, looking terrified?

Trout, Pujols and Hamilton would terrify me too..but you gotta throw it
  14. Twins Minor League Report (6/25): Mr. Rogers Very Unneighborly

On Tuesday afternoon, the rosters for the MLB Future's game were announced and it included two Twins players, Jose Berrios and Kennys Vargas. Word came out on Wednesday that Rochester Red Wings starter Trevor May would be added to US roster to replace Cardinals LHP Marco Gonzalez who made his big league debut.

May is in the middle of a breakout season at Triple-A. Since the beginning of May, he's gone 7-3 with a 2.35 ERA over 10 starts. This could set up a situation similar to last ...
