  1. FIP. Fielding Independent. Really?

Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) measures what a player’s ERA should have looked like over a given time period, assuming that performance on balls in play and timing were league average. Fangraphs relies on FIP to calculate WAR for pitchers.

Is FIP independent of the catcher?

The following table shows pitching performance by catcher over the last two seasons.

  2. Twins 2014 Rotation

It seems a bit early for this, but I think the Twins need to be aggressive early in free agency this year. Jim Pohlad has made it clear that the bank is open if Terry Ryan decides to spend money in free agency this offseason. As John Bonnes recently wrote, the Twins could easily have $25-$30M to spend on payroll this season.

I would like to expand upon this and propose what I would like the Twins to ...
  3. White Sox Sign Jose Abreu: Donkey Kong Part II

    Twins Fans,

It was just announced yesterday that the Chicago White Sox signed Jose Abreu to a 6 year $68 million dollar deal.

Let’s not get our undies in a bunch over the Chicago White Sox signing of Adam Dunn Part II. First a little on our Midwest American League Central neighbors.

Lest we forget, this is the same White Sox management that signed Adam Dunn to a 4yr/$56M deal.

  4. One October night in 1987 (Twins vs. Cardinals Game 1)

This is my first attempt at a blog entry. Thanks Twins Daily community. And yes this is a true story.

It was a wonderful evening in 1987, my best friend Mark and I had been wondering the streets of Minneapolis for hours, there were hundreds of folks seemingly in the same situation as ours. We saw signs, people dressed in costumes, yelling catchy and witty lines to everyone they passed. Mark and I talked of Hrbek launching another miracle homerun in the 9th. Seeing Bert close

The 2013 regular season has ended. The AL Central has produced a team that has made it to at least the ALCS. In addition, the Indians made the Wild Card game and the Royals had a pretty decent season. The Twins and White Sox battled heroically for last place, with the White Sox emerging victorious.

Prior to the season, I did ...
  6. Arizona Fall League is Underway - Kepler is the Twins Star of the AFL So Far

Not that I thought his 40-man roster spot was ever in doubt.

But he's the best performing Twin so far in the ARZ Fall League, which started on Oct 8.

Here's a story on Kepler and his performance in his last game.

Here's the Twins stats - they're on the Glendale Desert Dogs.

  7. On Faith

In 1987 and 1991, I was eight and eleven respectively.

1987 was the first year I “followed” the Minnesota Twins, and I can still remember my father, an ardent Yankees fan, complaining about the Twins that year. It was a beautiful time to be eight and hate the Yankees. Memories of the World Series are not very clear, but for some reason I swear I remember an Ozzie Smith back flip (I hope that actually happened). Once they won that championship, I was hooked (still have a wall plaque ...

ID:	5862With tickets and Homer Hankies sold out for days, Minnesota Twins fans were more than ready for the main event to start.

However the Series would not start off in the Twins’ favor. Not immediately anyways.

The Cardinals clung to a one-nothing lead through the first three innings. Jim Lindeman, a former roommate of Kirby Puckett’s at Bradley University, would reach on a double after his old roomie misjudged what should have been a caught popup ...
  9. R&P 14 Rollout

What better time than right now is there to roll out the newest edition of the Roster and Payroll page?

After fiddling with some design changes, there really isn't a lot of options. There are still some potential changes that may be made, but for now you're gonna have to deal with it.

The first thing you see is the PROJECTED payroll. You're gonna see that word a lot because, well... everything you see is a projection. I don't really have any special insight into anything. ...
  10. Peachy Pro Promise

To say that Byron Buxton had a successful full-season debut is less than accurate. To be completely honest, he went bananas, or peaches, maybe. It was predicted that Byron would dominate as a 19-year-old in 2013, but not like this. We need to really look at this young peach of a prospect.

Episode 55 of the Twins baseball podcast, Talk To Contact (@TalkToContact), is now available for download via iTunes or by clicking here.

We're essentially geniuses, that's the only conclusion I could come to after recording and listening to this week's episode. Pure baseball genius. We talk about some issues surrounding the infield this off-season (The return of Justin Morneau? ...

ID:	5858Beneath the fold of the October 17 edition of the Star Tribune was a story that may have grabbed larger headlines anywhere outside of this market.

On the morning of October 14, an eighteen-month-old little girl by the name of Jessica had horrifically fallen 22 feet into a well in the backyard of a Midland home in West Texas. Improbably, she lasted two days and change without food and water while rescuers dug through bedrock to reach her.

  13. Five Offseason Predictions

Last October in this space, I predicted five outcomes that would unfold for the Minnesota Twins in the ensuing offseason. As it turned out, three proved accurate and the other two proved laughably, laughably wrong.

As we look ahead to another offseason, which some are painting as one of the most important in franchise history, here's another set of predictions -- some bold, some not -- for what I expect to see in the coming months:

    1) The Twins will make a bid for ...
  14. All Former Twins Team - 2013

David Ortiz hit the big ALCS grand slam that was nearly caught by a toppling Torii Hunter. It was a reminder of how many former Twins players had strong 2013 seasons. Each of the four remaining teams have at least one former Twins player.

Very little annoys me more than people complaining about former Twins players succeeding with other organizations, forgetting the back stories of when they left the Twins. Sure, letting David Ortiz go looks horrible in retrospect, but at the time, ...
